Bella’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks
Hi! I’m Bella and 恭喜發財! 새해 복 많이 받으세요! Chúc mừng năm mới! In honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share some of my favorite Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese restaurants across the US, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the U.K., where I’ve safely eaten with my severe allergies to peanuts and several tree nuts (including walnuts and pecans, though I typically avoid all nuts to be safe). This guide features so many wonderful, homey spots offering both traditional and fusion dishes, but in the spirit of a holiday centered around connection and community, I especially want to highlight Oakland, California’s Monster Phở, not only for their generously portioned, delicious nut-free menu but their ongoing commitment to uplifting Bay Area families and public servants through donation programs, community celebrations, and free or discounted meals for those in need throughout the year! Jenna’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks
Hi! I’m Jenna and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where I safely ate with a dairy allergy. My finds feature places located in my home state of California as well as finds from a trip to Chicago. One of my favorites was Mamahuhu, a Chinese chain in SF where I had Kung Pao chicken with crunchy cucumbers and rice (hint: they have an allergen menu and excellent allergy protocols). Lunar New Year for me is about spending time with loved ones, honoring ancestors, and ushering in a new year of good luck. I was born in the year of the tiger and am excited for the year of the horse! I am a therapist in California and specialize in working with teens/adults navigating food allergies and anxiety. A myth that I would like to dispel is the idea that Asian food is not safe for people with food allergies. Asian cuisines are so varied and diverse, with many of them not using nuts or dairy in their main dishes, that it is unfair to characterize them as a monolith or assume restaurants are unable to accommodate allergies! Additionally, as someone with a milk allergy (and formerly allergic to eggs, beef, and pork as well), Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Korean restaurants have been lifelines for me growing up, often being the only places with safe options for me. Ina’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks
Hi! I’m Ina and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where my daughter safely ate with her allergies to peanuts, milk and egg. My finds feature places located in our home state of Colorado as well as from travels to New York. One of my favorites was Samwoojung in New York City where we devoured the Seoul Bulgogi cooked with beautiful and simple ingredients tableside. I really want people to know that the stereotype that Asian food is inherently “unsafe” for food allergies overlooks just how vast, regional, and ingredient-diverse Asian cuisines truly are.
