Providence College Allergy-Friendly College Campus Guide

Hi! I’m Lexi and I attend Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. I’m currently a senior and I’m a business management major. After graduation, I plan to work in sports and entertainment. I manage a tree nut allergy and have shared 116 reviews on the Spokin app. Follow me there @lexiry and on Instagram @lexislifelatelyy.

Providence College

“Before I started my freshman year at Providence, I met with the Registered Dietitian after filling out the dining accommodations form. They were very helpful in understanding the different places to eat on campus. Providence College is also a member of FARE so they try to create the best college experience for food allergic students. During my freshman year, I had to have an unlimited meal plan but during my sophomore and junior years I had an on campus apartment with a full kitchen.

Ray Dining Hall is the main dining hall on-campus, where there are no peanuts or tree nuts used explicitly in any of the meals provided there. However, there is the possibility of cross-contamination from some of the facilities the food comes from. When I had a meal plan, the dietitian was always in the dining hall or easily accessible by email if I had questions about any of the food being served. Within Ray, there is a station called “Simple Servings” which is free of the top 10 allergens as well as “Simple Zone” which is a card-access, password-protected pantry where there are products stored and prepared with precautions against cross-contamination for students with celiac or nut allergies. “Simple Zone” was an area I frequented for quick prepackaged snacks–they typically had lots of Made Good and Enjoy Life products among other items.

There are three other dining locations on campus: Alumni Food Hall, Mondor Cafe, and Eaton Street Cafe. They do have nut items at all of these locations plus the possibility of cross-contamination so I have never really tried any of the food prepared at these places, but I know plenty of other students with tree nut allergies that eat at these places safely. Moving into an apartment-style dorm for my remaining two on campus years allowed me to prepare all of my own meals without having to purchase a meal plan.”

“I have safely eaten the chicken tenders and fries at the AMP during different Providence Men’s Basketball games and have always been fine. They fry in canola oil, but I still double check each time just to ensure there have not been any changes in the kitchen. I have also had a pretzel!”

Blake's Tavern

Blake’s Tavern

“Blake’s is a completely nut-free pub. The servers always mention that the owner’s son has a peanut and tree nut allergy so the kitchen is completely free of both. Because of this, I can safely eat anything on the menu. It is a good spot for a casual meal or if you are looking for a place to eat before or after a show or a game at the AMP.”

Costantino’s Venda Bar & Ristorante

“There are nuts on the menu but I got the ribeye and was fine! They made note of it! It’s a great atmosphere for sunset during the summer.”

Don Jose Tequilas Restaurant

“I don’t think there’s any nuts on the menu. I go here on the regular and typically get the steak tacos! They’re delicious. I have also safely had the frozen margaritas.”

Golden Crust Pizza (Providence)

“This is a pizza place near Providence College that is good for a quick bite to eat and it’s open late. I believe the only nuts on the menu are in the desserts. I have had the cheese and pepperoni pizza before.”

Julian's

Julian’s

“Had a great meal at Julian’s! I had the special eggs + hash with no toast. There were some nuts on the menu, and I wasn’t sure if the vegan options were cashew cheese, but our server didn’t express any concerns. A successful breakfast spot!”

Moonshine Alley

“Went here after the Providence game yesterday and safely had the nachos for a post-game meal! They made a note to the kitchen and re-confirmed with me when they brought it out that they would be safe to eat. Delish!”

The Abbey

The Abbey

“My college friends and I are regulars at the Abbey. It is a classic lunch & dinner spot with a variety of options. There are no nuts in any of the menu items–there is sesame, but I am not allergic to sesame. We rotate getting one of the burgers or a variety of the appetizers. The potato skins & nachos are a group favorite. The staff is always so nice and have always made me feel safe eating there.”

The District

The District

“I have been to The District multiple times for brunch! There are some nuts on the menu, but I always get the huevos rancheros which are amazing and have been fine. A very good spot for brunch if you are in the Providence area.”

The Rhody Hen Cafe North Providence

“I went here for Sunday brunch once, and it was good. There are some nuts on the menu, but I got the breakfast quesadillas and they were great. Depending on their seasonal drink, their coffee bar may have some nut flavors. When I went their seasonal drink was pistachio, so I just stayed away from ordering coffee.”

Union Station Brewery

“There are some nuts on the menu, but I’ve eaten safely here multiple times! Just always let the kitchen know!”
