University of Denver Allergy-Friendly College Campus Guide

Hi! I’m Natalie and I attend the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. I’m a junior and double majoring in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies and Psychology. After graduation, I would love to go to graduate school to get a degree in either clinical psychology or human sexuality and I would like to live abroad! My dream is to live in the Italy in the countryside, making art, eating homemade pasta and drinking wine —  I’m so thankful to anyone sharing reviews in Italy to help make that dream a reality! I manage peanut and tree nut allergies and follow me on the Spokin app @natalie where I have shared 768 reviews!

University of Denver

“I love it here. While the dining hall is not 100% nut free, there are labels for every single dish at each meal, and I have yet to see nuts in anything besides an occasional dessert. We have a top-nine allergen-free station that has great food every day! I think the Stir Fry or sandwich stations are my favorite. The school is clean, safe, and a wonderful place to attend! Plus, it’s beautiful!”

Atomic Cowboy home of Denver Biscuit Co & Fat Sully’s NY Pizza

“Before I got my ears pierced across the street, I fueled myself up with a large slice of mushroom pizza. It was delicious, and perfect, with an abundance of mushrooms. The waiter was great, very friendly, and made sure to make a note about my allergy. I cannot wait to go back!”

Beau Jo's Denver

Beau Jo’s Denver

“I’ve had great experiences here! While their pizza isn’t the best I’ve ever had, their service is great with allergies. They’ve always been great about my nut allergies, and one of my good friends is celiac and always gets their gluten-free pizzas which she has never had problems with!”

Ben & Jerry’s

Ben & Jerry’s

“I love Ben & Jerry’s!!!! I LOVE THAT BEN AND JERRY’S IS ACROSS THE STREET FROM CAMPUS!! Plus, I love that they always use a clean scoop and fresh bin for whatever flavor I’d like. Their waffle cones are safe, but some of their dipped cones have nuts or peanut butter flavor on them so be careful of that! I usually get Phish Food, Marshmallow Skies, or Americone Dream, but I like to switch it up every once in a while too. They also sell ice cream cakes, pints, and other Ben & Jerry’s products/merch. Very much worth checking out if in the area and looking for a familiar and safe sweet treat!!”

Bonnie Brae Ice Cream

“Oh my gosh I wish I remembered the name of the flavor I got here, but let me tell you it was absolutely scrumptious. The waitstaff were great! They got my ice cream from a brand new bin and clean scoop from the back. They had so many delightful looking flavors to choose from, but definitely had some with nuts. Because they were so great with getting me a clean scoop and new bin, I felt comfortable but it’s certainly important to check the ingredients in the flavors you want to get!”

Fat Shack

“If you’re looking for late night fried food, Fat Shack is the place to go. With everything from loaded sandwiches to chicken tenders to mac and cheese bites to fried Oreos, Fat Shack is a fried post-going out haven. They do not use any nuts or nut oils, and their menu is simple! My friends and I love to pop over for a shake and a burger every once in a while, and it’s on University Ave, so close to campus!!”

Green Giraffe Bar

Green Giraffe Bar

“Okay LOVE this place!! About a twenty minute walk from DU, this cute smoothie, juice, and açaí bowl bar is an amazing spot. They do not put peanuts in any of the smoothies, and it sounds like they have dedicated blenders for peanut butter. They have almond milk in some of their smoothies, so that is important to note if you are allergic to almonds. They also do discounted “mystery smoothies” where they just pour extras of smoothies they had already made in layers in cups. What’s amazing is they know exactly what smoothies are in which cups. I got one with part “spunky tiger” (a mango forward smoothie) and part “purple urple” (a berry and hibiscus blend). It was delicious!! Cannot wait to go back. It’s located near a park so summers after discovering this spot are going to be sooo fun.”

IHOP

IHOP

“Went to IHOP for a quick and fun late-night bite after a show with some friends, and it was such a blast!! I got banana pancakes with a side of sausage links and whipped cream. The waitstaff was incredible and so kind. It was mostly just the manager. He seemed a little nervous when I told him about my allergy, but assured me he was making sure I was as safe as possible and he would do everything to do his best to ensure that, which I appreciated!! I will totally be going back. There is little that will keep me away from a good stack of banana pancakes.”

Illegal Pete’s DU

“This place feels like an elevated chipotle. With great food options and half of the place being a bar, the energy in here is fun. I got a burrito when I went and there were so many good things to put in it that the employee accidentally broke my tortilla and struggled wrapping it!! I was both slightly embarrassed and very impressed. I will likely do it again, too, because the burrito was just that good. They also had great chips and queso, and did not use peanut oil for their chips.”

Jelly Cafe

Jelly Cafe

“Trying Jelly for the first time has made me so excited to go back! I got a full plate of French toast with a side of chicken apple sausage and an iced latte! My friend and I shared four donut holes, made in house. You can pick any flavors, and one of their flavors is Thai Peanut, but all the flavoring happens after the fryer and the Thai peanut donut making is separate from the other flavors. We tried the classic jelly, cinnamon sugar, Mexican chocolate, and maple bacon. I think the maple bacon may have been my favorite. Can’t wait to go back!”

Jerusalem Restaurant

“I grabbed some late night bites here with my friends one night. We shared a plate of baba ganoush and pita. It was safe, and the staff was kind, and the space was fun. It’s located so close to my dorm, so it was such an easy spot to get to and from. I will totally be going back and trying more things on the menu! Fair warning, they have some desserts and dishes with nuts, which is not unsurprising given it is Mediterranean cuisine, but the waitstaff was great about noting my allergy. ”

Kaladi Coffee Roasters

Kaladi Coffee Roasters

“Stopped by this coffee shop near DU’s campus for the first time today! My personal order is an iced latte with honey when I don’t get a coffee with cream. And sometimes coffee shops can’t get the latte done quite right, but Kaladi did a great job! They have some nut milks and pastries, but they have a clean kitchen. It’s quick, nearby, and a good spot to study! ”

Lucile's Creole Cafe

Lucile’s Creole Cafe

“First time ever trying Lucile’s and truly good Creole food outside of New Orleans! Went here with a class of mine last quarter and it was delightful. I had the gumbo, and scraped the bowl clean. The service was great about checking and making sure my food was safe, but I had to ask the waiter what she found out before she could proactively let me know everything was safe. I chalk it up to the large table she was handling, but still it’s nice when the waiter makes it clear they are hyper aware of your allergy. Will definitely go back, the comfort food of those dishes were wonderful.”

Mustard's Last Stand

Mustard’s Last Stand

“One thing about me — I LOVE a hotdog. I’m from Chicago! How could I not? Mustard’s Last Stand finds a way to quell my hotdog itch and it’s across the street from DU. They do not use peanut oil, and have been very consistent when it comes to my food! I love their fries and their hotdogs certainly get the job done. ”

Pie Hole

Pie Hole

“I love pizza. I especially love good pizza. Luckily, a friend of mine introduced me to Pie Hole!! New York style pizza by the slice or full pies were the perfect lunch after a morning of thrifting and window shopping. I had a slice of cheese and a slice of their white potato pizza. It was DELICIOUS. I seriously cannot wait to go back. I might text my friend right now and ask to go this weekend. No nuts in their products from what I could see, and there were no nuts in my slices, I made sure of it!”

Snarf's Sandwiches

Snarf’s Sandwiches

“First time trying Snarf’s and I WILL be going back again. The sandwich was incredible, and I’m such a sandwich slob. I had my typical order at any sandwich shop — turkey, Swiss, mayo, tomato, onion, lettuce (in case anyone was curious). As a DU student, you get a free drink or bag of chips included with your sammy! On their chip display, they have a little sign about allergies. As a frequent sandwich shop visitor, I know Zapps chips have peanut oil, but their sign made it known to everyone else. Their staff were very nice and it was a great lunch!”

Thai Town Authentic and Modern

Thai Town Authentic and Modern

“If you know me, you know I love pad thai. My friends were grabbing Thai food for dinner the other night and invited me to join. I usually keep the ordering of Thai food to myself, so that I know that all the steps to make sure my food is safe are taken. However, my order is clear and I trust my friend very much with my allergy. When they handed me my pad Thai with no peanuts, they told me how they told the person taking their order about my allergies so intensely the employee looked a little intimidated! But not too intimidated to make sure my food was safe and be happy to comply to my requests. Thai Town is new to the University Ave circuit, but it’s made its mark, at least for me! While the food was a touch on the pricier side, the convenience of location and their happy accommodations made it worth it. The food was great and I had a wonderful night. I cannot wait to go back!!”

The Bardo Coffee House

“This coffee shop is the WHOLE PACKAGE. great coffee, comfortable and cute seating, both savory and sweet bakery and handheld breakfast items (hello breakfast burrito and sandwich), and WiFi available with any purchase? Yes, please!! This shop is the perfect study day space. My friends and I spent hours here, I had a couple delightful coffees, a chorizo breakfast burrito, and a muffin! They definitely have pastries with nuts, but they have so many options without any. Highly recommend checking this place out! It’s a very short drive from University of Denver, and it’s right around some cute stores if you want to treat yourself to a little shopping after a very productive day!”

Two Hands Corn Dogs

“What a fun concept! Corn dogs? Yes, please. I’ve had a couple different corn dogs from Two Hands and they were both great! This spot is so close to campus and a perfect weird little snack or mid day meal. We went in about an hour before closing and the service was very slow but the corn dogs were pretty good so I can’t really complain! They do not use peanut oil, and never put nuts in the fryer. I don’t think they even have any on their menu!”
