Wheat-Free Italy Top Picks

Hi! I’m Alex, and I recently traveled to Italy! I found many safe spots to eat while managing a wheat allergy and shared them on the Spokin app—all of my finds are also all featured in this guide. One of my favorites was Fiocco di Neve, where I had the best gelato of my life! If you are visiting the Amalfi Coast, a fun thing to do is to take a boat tour around Capri for the day. Restaurant Il Riccio

Restaurant Il Riccio

Location: Anacapri, Italy

“Had a lovely lunch here on our day trip to Capri! Our boat driver dropped us off waterside. The menu is allergy-marked, and the staff was knowledgeable. They even had little gluten-free breadsticks with a delicious eggplant spread that was complimentary. You need reservations well in advance, and it’s quite pricey but a great experience overall.”

Fiocco di neve

Fiocco di Neve

Location: Rome, Italy

“There are many gluten-free gelato shops in Rome, which is heaven, but this place was the absolute best gelato I’ve ever had in my whole life. I was absolutely floored and could not believe all the flavors were gluten-free. I got Kinder and tiramisu on a pistachio and chocolate gluten-free cone. My mind was completely blown. My entire gluten-eating family was also blown away and said it was their favorite hands down as well. An absolute must-visit!”

Mercato Hostaria Roma

Mercato Hostaria Roma

Location: Rome, Italy

“Rome is a gluten-free dream, and we had an amazing meal here. The menu is traditional Roman food with a huge gluten-free section. It is AIC accredited, and they give you a gluten-free placemat to signal your allergy to the staff, and my physical plate dish even had ‘gluten-free’ printed on the plate. Couldn’t have felt safer. I got the carbonara, and it was delicious. The restaurant is also situated in a bustling square lined with bistros. Lovely experience.”

Pizza in Trevi

Pizza in Trevi

Location: Rome, Italy

“As someone with a wheat allergy, pizza can be hard to come by in Italy, as gluten-free wheat flour is common. I was skeptical of how busy I knew this place would be right next to the Trevi Fountain, but it was so good. They give you a gluten-free placemat, and the pizza ingredients are listed on the menu. They put great care into the dough. My pizza was delicious, and I was already wishing I could go back for another! They also have a 100% gluten-free gelato shop next door. “

“We only stayed here for a night but they have breakfast included which was buffet style, however when I asked a staff member if they had any gluten free bread, they brought me an entire BASKET full of options including various bread types, croissant, & a chocolate muffin. It was all individually wrapped and ingredients listed. I was sooo happy!!”
