Peanut, Tree Nut, and Shellfish-Free Germany, Portugal, and Italy Top Picks

Hi! I’m Lizzie, and I recently traveled to Europe for the first time with my fiancé and went to Germany, Italy, and Portugal! I found several safe spots to eat and drink while managing my peanut, tree nut, and shellfish allergies and shared them on the Spokin app — they are also all featured in this guide. One of my favorites was Osteria delle Tre Panche, where we dined on the terrace with an incredible view. We had the best pasta of our lives here – the fresh egg ravioli with truffle. A fun thing to do if you are in Florence is to take a wine tour to Tuscany, or in Rome, take a pasta-making cooking class! “Cook with us in Rome” was amazing with allergies. GERMANY

Wilma Wunder Köln

“Was really happy to enjoy berry pancakes here! The waiter was receptive to my allergy card and they have a very useful allergen menu on their website.”

Ruby Ella Hotel & Bar

“Very limited menu, however, I had one of the best cocktails ever here (the Ruby Sparkle) and enjoyed a safe plain pizza!”

Café de Paris Cologne

“This gets a positive review because I safely ate scrambled eggs here. However, the allergen menu was not correct here. I ordered pancakes but then was told that they contained traces of nuts, despite none of the pancakes, waffles, etc. being labeled as having nuts. I was pretty turned off by this!”

ITALY

Ciro and Sons – Restaurant Pizzeria Firenze

“Had amazing pasta and salad here! I even got to try my fiancé’s dish – the carbonara was incredible, as well as the ‘mezzi paccheri con genovese’ (aka Neapolitan beef and onion pasta)! The waiter was very knowledgeable and made me feel safe. Both tables next to us had allergies too!”

Pizzeria Il Trammino

“They didn’t speak English here, but they were the absolute sweetest and so kind. I showed them my allergy card in Italian and they understood and even showed us ingredients one by one. We had great pizza here and it was a safe option in a shellfish-dominated beach town.”

O’Pazzariello

“Enjoyed a Margherita pizza and salad here! Staff knew what to do when I showed them the allergy card.”

Cook With Us In Rome

“Had an awesome experience here! The chef was super knowledgeable and knew the difference between cross-contamination, traces of, etc. 1 other person in the class had a but allergy, and another had a fish allergy! We did not make anything at all with nuts or shellfish, and I communicated my allergies prior to booking. For the tiramisu, the lady fingers may contain traces of nuts, so he gave me my own to use. A really really fun class and Prosecco was flowing the whole time!”

Amorino

“So nice we went here twice! Fulfilled a life long dream of eating gelato in Italy (and I almost never eat at ice cream shops). Staff was very knowledgeable and scooped from a fresh container in the back with a clean scoop. Day 1 I got an affogato and day 2 vanilla gelato! The allergen menu was a little confusing, so I would stick with safe and simple flavors here.”

Osteria delle Tre Panche

“Had the best pasta of my LIFE here. Also steak Florentine, and a mixed salad. The menu stated that they will help accommodate any allergy. The chef came out and hugged me and assured my fiance that he ‘wanted to keep me safe, too.’ So heartwarming, and on top of that, enjoyed an absolutely incredible meal. You MUST order the truffle ravioli!”

Pino’s Sandwiches – Salumeria Verdi

“Pino himself made my sandwich! He was so reassuring even though it was super crowded in there. The original sandwich I ordered came with pesto, so he informed me he’d swap it for a garlic sauce without nuts. He even told me not to be scared because the garlic sauce would be green! It was a DELICIOUS sandwich and worth the wait!”

Hotel Berchielli

“We really loved this hotel and had a wonderful room with a view. It’s right in the center of everything. Breakfast options were pretty good (and included in your hotel stay!) – they had a whole gluten-free section!”

Relais Giulia

“Lovely hotel! I can’t speak to the allergy-friendliness of the food for breakfast here because I opted to not eat it (personal choice), but the location was amazing and near so many allergy-friendly places!”

PORTUGAL

Swallow Decadent Brunch

“I don’t believe there were many, if any, nuts or shellfish here. The waitstaff was very receptive to my allergy card, and I enjoyed yummy breakfast here!”

Mercador Café & Brunch

“My first meal abroad! The menu had a statement at the bottom asking to inform your waiter if you have any allergies. I ate burrata salad and a personalized charcuterie board with no nuts! I also drank a port tonic, champagne, and espresso. It was very good!”

Pizzeria Bella Mia!

“Showed my Equal Eats card and waiter brought it right to the chef! I was assured that my Toscana pizza was entirely safe—it was delicious!”

The Editory House Ribeira Porto Hotel

“We loved our stay here! The menu had a general cross-contamination warning, but we enjoyed some little snacks and port wine here!”
