CAPRI

Buonocore Gelateria Pasticceria Gastronomia e Tavola Calda

Location: Capri, Italy

“The best gelateria on the whole island! Have been going here since I was a baby! The gelato is to-die-for and the staff is so kind! They all speak English and are helpful with allergy concerns. There is also a bakery inside with delicious pastries. Also helpful with navigating allergies.”

CORTONA

Gelateria Snoopy

Location: Cortona, Italy

“My daughter is allergic to peanuts and all tree nuts. We had such a positive experience here! I think it was maybe the best gelato we had our whole trip. The staff was extremely helpful and the owner came out to go over all my questions about production. Only wish we had more time in Cortona to go back!”

Gelateria Dei Neri

Location: Florence, Italy

“This was hands-down our favorite gelato spot in Florence. It’s very busy but they were patient and able to let us know which flavors did not have nuts. They did note the same machine is used for all the gelato so there was the risk of cross-contact. They clearly understood food allergies and our daughter had a fruit flavor, mango, and a vanilla/creme flavor.”

Gelateria La Carraia

Location: Florence, Italy

“Several insiders name this the best gelato in Florence. It’s a very busy spot and it felt challenging but once we told them about our daughter’s allergies, it was clear they are educated and could steer us in the right direction of what to avoid and what was okay. Like most places, they have nuts in some flavors but plenty that do not. It’s located right near the Ponte Vecchio.”

@marla who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

Location: Florence, Italy

“This was the only place I was able to find gelato in Florence. They have 10 flavors—2 have tree nuts (pistachio and hazelnut that were next to each other in the far right corner). No peanuts in the shop! They do use the same scoop for all the flavors (like a classic ice cream shop), but I mentioned my allergies to the worker and she was extremely understanding and accommodating. She thoroughly cleaned a scoop for me after I asked and then scooped the flavors from the non used part of the gelato tub.”

Fiocco di neve

Location: Rome, Italy

“This gelato shop is 100% gluten-free and in a very good location near the Pantheon and other Ancient Rome sites. They were our favorite gelato shop and they had flavors including an Oreo flavor that was to-die-for. They also had signs that said they accommodate other allergies. Highly recommend this place.”

@andglutenfree who manages celiac and an oyster allergy

Frigidarium

Location: Rome, Italy

“I emailed everyone in Rome looking for safe gelato. Frabzio, who owns this place, assured me we could visit. They make all flavors on site. He came out and discussed with my son what he could have. He then went into the back with a clean scoop and prepared safe selection for us. I thanked him and he said the nicest thing, ‘No, thank you for trusting in me. I have a daughter and know how important this is to you.’ While he did have a few nut flavors, he made us feel comfortable and safe. We went everyday we were there. The staff also understood allergies and were helpful.”

@bman who manages peanut, tree nut, and shellfish allergies

Gelateria Sweet Life

Location: Rome, Italy

“Felt very safe eating here with nut allergy. They have flavors with nuts but use different scoops for all of them and even used a new one for my order.”

@gianaeats who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

Günther

“The staff was helpful and spoke English, and they had separate color spoons on display to indicate egg allergy (yellow spoon in gelati contained egg). My son got the stracciatella, it was delicious. There are two Gunther locations in Rome.”

@andglutenfree who manages celiac and an oyster allergy

L’Arena del Gelato

Location: Rome, Italy

“The staff was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what to do once I told them I had a peanut and tree nut allergy. They made all of the fruit gelato in the morning before the nut gelatos, used a clean scoop, and scooped from the middle of the gelato bin. I felt very comfortable eating the delicious gelato!”

@sara22 who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

Limon’è

Location: Rome, Italy

“BEST PLACE! Lemon shop that has 4 lemon gelato flavors—none have peanuts in them! The staff was very helpful in explaining the different flavors and which had dairy in them as well. Great shop for completely safe gelato! Have gotten it twice so far and will be heading back again soon!”

Venchi Cioccolato e Gelato 2.png

Venchi Cioccolato e Gelato

Location: Rome, Italy

“This spot was suggested to us by a local as their favorite. It’s 140 years old! They had some nuts, like pistachio and hazelnut, but they were very helpful and our daughter had chocolate and vanilla and it was so good. The prices were notably higher than most places, but it was really good!”

@susie who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

Giolitti.png

Giolitti

Location: Rome, Italy

“The staff was so nice! One of the managers was unsure if this could be done and spoke to an employee who makes the gelato and he went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and was able to get fresh gelato from the back that was separated from other flavors!”

@rmbirdoff who manages peanut, tree nut, and fruit allergies

Gelateria S.M.Maggiore

Location: Rome, Italy

“Each flavor of gelato had its own scoop to minimize cross contamination, and the fruit flavors were in a separate area from the chocolate/vanilla/nuts/etc. The menu with all the gelato flavors is also on their website. They told us what was safe, then used freshly cleaned scoops, and took the gelato from the middle of the container (away from where it had been scooped previously and underneath the top layer, so nothing had touched it). The mint and stracciatella were very good!”

SIENA

GROM – Il Gelato come una volta

Location: Siena, Italy

“100% gluten-free gelato chain throughout Italy! Staff clearly understood nut allergies and cross-contamination. They have no peanuts in the store. There are cones with hazelnuts but those are kept in a separate case. They have almonds and hazelnuts as toppings, but those are in sealed jars. The gelato is all in bins, and each has a separate paddle for serving. There was a hazelnut, almond, and pistachio flavor but a lot of nut-free flavors and sorbets. Grom has a full allergen chart for every flavor on their website which you can look up ahead of time. They say they can’t guarantee there is no chance of cross-contamination, but I’ve been told this everywhere in Italy and personally felt much more comfortable here than at any other gelato shops. Safely had vanilla and raspberry sorbet in a cup!”

@emsnutfreeeats who manages celiac and peanut and tree nut allergies

Duomo di Siena

Location: Siena, Italy
