EAT

1. La Giostra

Location: Florence, Italy

“THIS PLACE! Cannot say enough good things. The food is phenomenal. They are known for their pear ravioli but all the pastas were ammmazing. The restaurants busy so we sometimes had different waiters. However, every waiter knew my allergies, and would come over and say yes, the nut allergy! I was so impressed by this communication among the staff. Their English was perfect and they were easy to communicate with/willing to modify any dish. A MUST DO!!”

2. Ciro and Sons – Restaurant Pizzeria Firenze

Location: Florence, Italy

“Entire menu is available gluten and/or lactose-free. They have a separate kitchen for gluten-free and only gluten-free chefs can use it. I had their pizza, bread, and tiramisu. The pizza had the biggest ball of mozzarella I’ve ever seen and I ate it all. This place is wonderful.”

3. Trattoria ZàZà

Location: Florence, Italy

“Waitress took chef card to the kitchen. My daughter had an amazing fruit smoothie, bruschetta, grilled chicken and potatoes, and strawberries with mascarpone pudding. The tiramisu was not safe. Waitress read the package on the lady fingers for us!”

4. Mister Pizza

Location: Florence, Italy

“Mister Pizza has been dubbed the best gluten-free pizza in all of Italy, and in my opinion it totally lives up to the hype! They have a separate English menu and staff speak perfect English and totally understand food allergies. It’s right next to the Duomo so you get amazing views! They do have regular pizza dough as well but offer gluten-free dough (it’s like actual pizza dough!) and cook all the gluten-free pizzas in a dedicated pizza oven. Seriously the best gluten-free pizza I’ve EVER had-the crust is so fluffy and looks identical to the regular pizza! All gluten-free pizzas come with a special allergy flag. There are no nuts on the menu other than one pizza that has pistachios on it. We’ve been 3 times and I never once saw it ordered, so felt comfortable and staff were knowledgable about cross contamination and already used separate gloves, surfaces, etc for the gluten-free pizza. They also have vegan cheese! Definitely a more American restaurant but highly recommend if you’re in Florence!”

5. Sgrano

Location: Florence, Italy

“100% gluten-free sandwich shop in Florence! They had no peanuts in the store but did have one or two sandwiches with pistachios and I believe hazelnuts. Staff prepared my order on clean paper when I asked/mentioned my allergies. It is a bit small of a kitchen but I felt comfortable and had a classic prosciutto sandwich safely!”

6. Ristorante Buca Niccolini

Location: Florence, Italy

“GREAT restaurant! Apparently famous, we didn’t know because the hotel made the reservation for us! Very good food, brought up to your table on a little cart. Super old fashioned and cool. No peanuts on the menu and was told by our waiter that there were no peanuts used in the kitchen for the food! Some of the desserts had to be avoided, but he was very knowledgable in which would be ok and which would not be. Very experienced and knowledgable waiters and felt very safe here.”

7. Parione

Location: Florence, Italy

“Amazing food and such a cool wine cellar/table atmosphere in the downstairs of the restaurant! Had the vegetable appetizer with zucchine and eggplant and then the pasta with tomato sauce and basil. Amazing food and the waiter said I would be ok with the peanut allergy. Menu listed which allergens each dish contained, and felt safe. There was a dessert with peanuts listed on the dessert menu after dinner, tiramisu, but avoided that anyways. Would recommend (understood English fairly well)!”

8. Trattoria 13 Gobbi

Location: Florence, Italy

“When I told my waiter about my allergy, he pointed to another girl nearby and said she has the same allergies! He made it very clear they are comfortable and work with allergies all the time. None of the dishes we ordered needed modifying! Great place!”

9. Il Francescano Tavern

“Another delicious AIC certified dinner spot with a lot of outdoor seating. This place has a gluten-free menu and they’re extremely well versed in safe food protocol for celiacs. They also are good with other allergies. We had bread, a traditional Florence ribeye, cheese plate, and the best tasting pasta with boar meat sauce.”

13. Il Barretto

Location: Florence, Italy

“Great food and amazing atmosphere in this restaurant!!! Very well-labeled menu and very experienced waiters. Told them about my peanut allergy and they said I would be fine, no peanuts on the menu. Small kitchen, which can be a little nerve-wracking for more seriously allergic people with different allergies, but they assured us that they are extremely able to handle allergies which was a relief!”

15. Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina

Location: Florence, Italy

“First of all, the staff consists of some of the best sommeliers in Italy. No, this isn’t an exaggeration. Second, the wine list is truly incredible and so, allergies aside, take a break and enjoy a glass of wine across from Palazzo Pitti. Third, try the bruschetta toscana. If you’re allergic to eggs, it’ll be one of the first times you can try liver without eggs in it. It’s delectable; one of the best appetizers in Italy.”

16. Alimentari Uffizi

Location: Florence, Italy

“Little spot our tour guide found for us! She translated my allergies in Italian so I am not certain on their English so I would definitely bring a translation card/have it on your phone. Everything is made from a farm and was soo fresh! Had a sandwich with prosciutto and pecorino romano!”

@izzytri12 who manages tree nut, salmon, and sesame allergies

17. Ba Ghetto

20. Gustaosteria

Location: Florence, Italy

21. Gustavino Duomo Firenze

Location: Florence, Italy

“The staff did a great job keeping my son safe. I presented a card with his allergens written in Italian and our server took it to the chef to verify that his pizza would be safe. He came back with a few good questions just to make sure they had read the card correctly. They were very friendly about it and very diligent.”

24. La Borsa

Location: Florence, Italy

“The menu was very well-labeled and the waiters there spoke English. They weren’t the most friendly but my daughter ate there safely. Honestly we went there because it was conveniently located, maybe a 5-10min walk from the Ponte Vecchio and we weren’t prepared to be in Firenze as our other trip was cancelled. They had free WiFi which was nice.”

@vkotz who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

25. La Buchetta Food & Wine Restaurant

Location: Florence, Italy

“We got this res last minute and it was AMAZING. We did not expect to love it the way we did!! The waiters are amazing and spoke perfect English. They knew every ingredient in every dish and take great caution with allergies. When our waiter wasn’t positive, he would always ask the chef and come back to discuss with us. The angels and demon gnocchi and cheese wheel pasta are a MUST. If you love cheese, this is the place for you!!! Our waiter told us that on the cheesecake there was a Biscoff cookie, and even though it didn’t say may contain nuts, he didn’t feel comfortable serving me something that wasn’t made in house. Instead, we got the apple pie and it was amazing! Such an amazing spot highly recommend!!”

@izzytri12 who manages tree nut, salmon, and sesame allergies

26. La Divina Enoteca

Location: Florence, Italy

“As part of the wine tasting, we got to try cheese, olive oil and bread. The staff were really understanding of my allergy and got me safe crackers to eat instead of the bread.”

27. Le Botteghe Di Donatello Firenze

Location: Florence, Italy

“This restaurant is right next to the Duomo and was one of our favorite meals in Florence and of our whole trip! They are AIC-certified (gluten-free) and every dish is marked for allergens. There were no peanuts listed on the menu and this was confirmed by the owner/chef (who was so nice!) and waiters were also very knowledgeable about food allergies and ingredients in dishes. The menu does note cross contamination as the dish containing that allergen (we were confused by a few nut-free gluten-free dishes that were marked as containing tree nuts but checked in with the staff and were told which items were safe!) I had the gluten-free bruschetta (so good!) and a steak entree! They also had gluten-free pasta and pizza and everything was listed on a separate gluten-free menu in the back of the main menu. This was the first place I was able to get dessert too! We split the berry panna cotta and creme caramel (both no nuts and listed on gluten-free menu) I had no allergy issues and loved our meal! Definitely recommend for gluten and nut allergies in Florence!”

28. Le Vespe Cafè

Location: Florence, Italy

“Waitress was American and understood me perfectly well when I said I was allergic to peanuts. She told me that they do have peanuts in the kitchen because I think they make their own peanut butter there, so there was a chance of cross contamination but she assured me there would be no peanuts on my plate. I asked if she could let the chef know to be extra careful and she said that she would. Felt safe enough and the food was phenomenal!! Came back the next morning, got something different with a different waitress and was also fine! Great American breakfast food spot.”

29. MaMMAMia Restaurant

Location: Florence, Italy

“This place was very thoughtful in following the guidelines and ensuring no nuts!”

30. Move On-Italian Pub & Record Store

Location: Florence, Italy

“This is a bar/restaurant downstairs and an amazing record shop upstairs! We got a ton of drinks here one night and then went upstairs to hang out in the record shop. It’s a wonderful venue! No peanuts served on tables (we had a lot of trouble with this in Florence) and drinks are delicious (although a little on the pricier side). Didn’t get food but they seemed to have classic bar food and staff were friendly although they were understaffed/very busy!”

TREAT

1. Grom

Location: Florence, Italy

“Great menu to search out what has nuts and what does not. Staff takes measure to ensure the gelato is scooped with a fresh scooper!”

@jbass12 who manages peanut, tree nut, and shellfish allergies

2. Gelateria La Carraia

Location: Florence, Italy

“Several insiders name this as the best gelato in Florence. It’s a very busy spot and it felt challenging but once we told them about our daughter’s allergies, it was clear they are educated and could steer us in the right direction of what to avoid and what was okay. Like most places, they have nuts in some flavors but plenty that do not. It’s located right near the Ponte Vecchio.”

@susie who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

3. Gallery Café

Location: Florence, Italy

“This was the only place I was able to find gelato in Florence. They have 10 flavors-2 have tree nuts (pistachio and hazelnut that were next to each other in the far right corner). No peanuts in the shop! They do use the same scoop for all the flavors (like a classic ice cream shop) but I mentioned my allergies to the worker and she was extremely understanding and accommodating. She thoroughly cleaned a scoop for me after I asked and then scooped the flavors from the non used part of the gelato tub. I got vanilla (it was in the opposite corner from the nut flavors) in a cup and had no allergy issues! It was also the cleanest gelato shop we’ve come across. I also had safe coffee here most mornings! We definitely want to go back for gelato!”

@emsnutfreeeats who manages celiac and peanut and tree nut allergies

4. La Milkeria

Location: Florence, Italy

“The staff was very helpful and even brought out the package for the gelato machine. The gelato wasn’t safe but she was able to eat a crepe with berries.”

5. Bottega Artigiana del Gusto

Location: Florence, Italy

“This place is unbelievable. It’s 100% gluten-free and it’s part grocery store, part restaurant, and part bakery. They have so many amazing pasta options if you happen to be buying groceries. We stayed for lunch and ordered the pizza, profiteroles, cream puffs, and other baked goods. Definitely the best tasting bakery we tried in Italy where most bakeries served very dry pastries.”

STAY

1. Toscanelli Residenza d’Epoca

Location: Florence, Italy

“I would move into the hotel if I could-easiest 5 star review I’ve ever written! The owners are lovely people (they also speak great English). The hotel is right in front of the Boboli Gardens and in walking distance to the Ponte Vecchio. Extremely clean, has a fridge in the room, and feels like you’re staying in someone’s home in the ambience way but still very hotel-like in terms of amenities. The owners walked us through a map of all their favorite spots in Florence and gave us a list of restaurants to try in the area. They don’t serve food/breakfast but work with the cafe down the street and offer discounted food for hotel residents. If you stay here ask for “the room at the very top of the stairs”-it’s 2 queen sized beds with the best views of Florence in the whole city!”
