EAT

1. Trattoria de’ Pitti

Location: Florence

“Loved this restaurant in Florence! The food is delicious and they serve great wine. It’s right across from the Boboli Gardens. They have allergens listed on the menu and a message about food allergies on the bottom of their menu something like ‘we will accommodate any allergies just ask!’ Our waiter spoke really good English and checked everything with the kitchen. They did have a few of the main entrees marked as a 5 (meaning they contain peanuts) but he wrote down my allergies and I had no issues. They have gluten-free penne and spaghetti but no pizza crust. I had the penne with a bolognese sauce which was very good and safe! Definitely recommend!”

3. Le Botteghe Di Donatello Firenze

Location: Florence

“This restaurant is right next to the Duomo and was one of our favorite meals in Florence and of our whole trip! They are AIC-certified (Gluten-Free) and every dish is marked for allergens. There were no peanuts listed on the menu and this was confirmed by the owner/chef (who was so nice!) and waiters were also very knowledgeable about food allergies and ingredients in dishes. The menu does note cross contamination as the dish containing that allergen (we were confused by a few nut-free/gluten-free dishes that were marked as containing tree nuts but checked in with the staff and were told which items were safe!) I had the gluten-free bruschetta (so good!) and a steak entree! They also had gluten-free pasta and pizza and everything was listed on a separate gluten-free menu in the back of the main menu. This was the first place I was able to get dessert too! We split the berry panacotta and creme caramel (both no nuts and listed on gluten-free menu) I had no allergy issues and loved our meal! Definitely recommend for gluten and nut allergies in Florence!”

4. Sgrano

Location: Florence

“Dedicated 100% gluten-free eatery that serves up the Florence street food focaccia sandwich called the schiacciata. You’ll see everyone in Florence eating a sandwich like this and it’s because they’re so good. We ordered the sandwich flight and tried 4 different types. They also serve pizza and some other dishes but come for the sandwiches!”

5. Ciro and Sons – Restaurant Pizzeria Firenze

Location: Florence

“I was shocked to stumble upon this restaurant in Florence. They can make anything on their menu gluten-free! They also have lactose free, vegan, and vegetarian options. The food is delicious, I can’t wait to go back one day.”

6. La Prosciutteria-Firenze

7. Mister Pizza

Location: Florence

“Every pizza in this restaurant can be made gluten-free. It’s located right next to the Duomo so the views are incredible but it can get very busy! It’s AIC certified so I know it’s safe to eat because they take celiac disease very seriously in their food preparation. All the pizzas can also be made lactose-free and they are able to manage other allergies as well.”

8. Caffe Concerto Paszkowski

Location: Florence

“Super fancy restaurant and bar with live music in Piazza della Repubblica near the Duomo. They did not serve peanuts! We got some drinks here. Cocktails were pretty expensive but very strong and so fun to take pictures of. Looked like they could probably accommodate food allergies at the restaurant. The live music was also so fun!”

10. Il Francescano Tavern

Location: Florence

“FAVORITE restaurant in Florence! Stumbled upon this with my mom and sister and wow… it is amazing. I still dream of eating the steak…It’s definitely, till this day, my favorite meal ever!!! My sister and mom love the dumplings (Gluten-free)! A must if you are Florence! The staff is so accommodating.”

11. All’Antico Vinaio

Location: Florence

“Bring your own gluten-free bread and don’t miss out on this sandwich shop! I picked up Schars bread from a grocery story beforehand (most if not all grocery stores will have a gluten-free section!). The sandwich makers are extremely knowledgeable. They will change their gloves, clean the work space and use all new appliances once you tell them you are gluten-free! Don’t sleep on their spreads—the eggplant and sundried tomato spreads are to die for!”

12. Move On-Italian Pub & Record Store

Location: Florence

“This is a bar/restaurant downstairs and an amazing record shop upstairs! We got a ton of drinks here one night and then went upstairs to hang out in the record shop. It’s a wonderful venue! No peanuts served on tables (we had a lot of trouble with this in Florence) and drinks are delicious (although a little on the pricier side). Didn’t get food but they seemed to have classic bar food and staff were friendly although they were understaffed/very busy!”

13. Da Garibardi

Location: Florence

“Another delicious AIC certified dinner spot with a lot of outdoor seating. This place has a gluten-free menu and they’re extremely well versed in safe food protocol for celiacs. They also are good with other allergies. We had bread, a traditional Florence ribeye, cheese plate, and the best tasting pasta with boar meat sauce.”

14. Ristorante Quinoa

Location: Florence

“This place is 100% gluten-free and serves “American” food. I had the fried chicken strips, potato wedges, and my wife had a burger. They serve fresh bread and olive oil to start. Make a reservation if you’re not Italian because they’ll turn you away (that left a sour taste in our mouth because the place was empty when they turned away a few desperate celiacs). Italians without reservations were seated immediately but maybe that’s just a cultural thing.”

15. Starbene Senza Glutine

Location: Florence

“The staff was very helpful in helping me find something safe to eat! The bread is delicious!”

16. Tuscan Taste Florence

Location: Florence

“We took a private gluten-free cooking class with Chef Vary at Tuscan Taste Florence! We felt so safe here knowing how seriously Chef Vary takes celiac disease. The work space was completely sanitized and covered for the class. The equipment we used (even the pasta maker) were all dedicated gluten-free and even the ingredients like salt are all kept separately to keep them from being contaminated. Chef Vary was the perfect instructor and taught us to make ravioli and a spaghetti pasta that turned out to be one of our favorite meals in Florence!”

17. Ristorante Buca Niccolini

Location: Florence

“This restaurant is pretty famous in Florence and for good reason-the menu is huge! They have gluten-free pasta and pizza and everything that’s gluten-free is clearly labeled on the menu. They are AIC (Italian Celiac Association) certified. I didn’t see any peanuts and pretty few tree nuts, but told our waiter my allergies and he wrote them down for the kitchen. We split prosciutto and melon as an app and had a ton of drinks. I got the salmon fettuccine with gluten-free pasta. Very good pasta sauce-wish the pasta was cooked a little bit more (it was def from a box) but overall a very good meal and my friends loved their dishes! Definitely a fantastic allergy option in Florence.”

18. Vivanda

Location: Florence

“This is a very sweet spot hidden among the streets of Florence. This restaurant offers organic food and wine, gluten-free options, vegetarian options and even vegan options that are so delicious. The staff is very accommodating and takes time to explain the menu and wine. You can even take cooking classes here.. which was great for us who were searching for a gluten-free cooking class in the city. Perfect spot for lunch, a quick bite, dinner or drinks.”

TREAT

1. Grom

Location: Florence

“Another Grom location featuring their 100% gluten-free gelato. Pro tip; get the waffle cone because when do you find those freshly made waffle cones gluten-free and not pre-packaged? This location is right next to the city center and it’s open late so it’s the perfect after dinner dessert (or midday, I won’t judge).”

2. Bottega Artigiana del Gusto

Location: Florence

“This place is unbelievable. It’s 100% gluten-free and it’s part grocery store, part restaurant, and part bakery. They have so many amazing pasta options if you happen to be buying groceries. We stayed for lunch and ordered the pizza, profiteroles, cream puffs, and other baked goods. Definitely the best tasting bakery we tried in Italy where most bakeries served very dry pastries.”

Location: Florence

“This was the only place I was able to find gelato in Florence. They have 10 flavors-2 have tree nuts (pistachio and hazelnut that were next to each other in the far right corner). No peanuts in the shop! They do use the same scoop for all the flavors (like a classic ice cream shop) but I mentioned my allergies to the worker and she was extremely understanding and accommodating. She thoroughly cleaned a scoop for me after I asked and then scooped the flavors from the non used part of the gelato tub. I got vanilla (it was in the opposite corner from the nut flavors) in a cup and had no allergy issues! It was also the cleanest gelato shop we’ve come across. I also had safe coffee here most mornings! We definitely want to go back for gelato!”

STAY

1. Toscanelli Residenza d’Epoca

Location: Florence

“I would move into the hotel if I could-easiest 5 star review I’ve ever written! The owners are lovely people (they also speak great English). The hotel is right in front of the Boboli Gardens and in walking distance to the Ponte Vecchio. Extremely clean, has a fridge in the room, and feels like you’re staying in someone’s home in the ambience way but still very hotel-like in terms of amenities. The owners walked us through a map of all their favorite spots in Florence and gave us a list of restaurants to try in the area. They don’t serve food/breakfast but work with the cafe down the street and offer discounted food for hotel residents. If you stay here ask for “the room at the very top of the stairs”-it’s 2 queen sized beds with the best views of Florence in the whole city!”
