EAT

1. Vecia Cavana

Location: Venice

“Another amazing restaurant certified by the AIC (Italy’s celiac association). Entire menu minus 1 item (gnocchi) was gluten-free including the fried foods because they use rice flour. All the servers were knowledgeable about celiac and the manager even came to speak with me. We were given gluten-free bread and crackers and even cookies with the limoncello after the meal! Ordered the fried seafood, scallops, spaghetti, and cheesecake and everything was amazing.”

2. Ristorante AcquaPazza

Location: Venice

“We had dinner and it was so delicious. We gave my son’s allergy cards and they were able to accommodate his food allergies. We ordered a grilled branzini, linguine with pomodoro sauce, grilled veggies, and a side of mashed potatoes. We passed on ordering an appetizer because it didn’t seem safe. But the chef ended up making 3 appetizers for us and a separate portion for my son. The waitstaff were knowledgeable and the food was delicious. We sat outdoors, too, and that was wonderful. We didn’t order dessert because we were too full!”

3. 1000 Gourmet Venezia

Location: Venice

“First meal in Venice was a pizza from 1000 Gourmet. I’d already read very good reviews from other celiacs about it so I felt pretty good about it. Also, their website says specifically that they prep their gluten-free pizzas in a separate area and cook them in a dedicated oven. How neat is that? We had the diavola and a pistachio, prosciutto pizza. Both had a thick crust but a thinner middle, which we found was very common in Italy (I understand why people use forks and knives to eat the pizzas now). Meal was good and safe, dough was pretty flavorful. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in town.”

4. Ristorante Pizzería Da Alvise

5. Ristorante Dell’Osmarin

Location: Venice

“This menu was written in 4 languages, which was pretty cool, and clearly laid out all the allergens (in each language). We had pizza and a spritz!”

6. Muro Frari

Location: Venice

“This restaurant handles food allergies very well! When I told the waitress I had a peanut allergy, she quickly went to grab the restaurant’s allergy booklet that had a graph of all allergens for every single item on the large menu. She located what I ordered and showed me that it did not contain any nuts! Felt very safe eating here, as the restaurant was very well-equipped to handle allergies. (understood English well)”

7. La Lista Venezia

Location: Venice

“Very well-labeled menu for allergens, and waitress was cautious and wrote down my allergy for the chef. She didn’t totally understand at first, but then did when I said in Italian and asked if sesame was okay for me to have because of the toast. Great breakfast food here. (didn’t really understand English well)”

8. Brunch Cafe

Location: Venice

“For breakfast here, I didn’t see anything on the menu containing peanuts, so we gave it a try. Told the waiter about my peanut allergy and he assured me that my pancakes with eggs and bacon would be safe. The food was very delicious and I felt safe eating it! (understood English very well)”

9. Trattoria Ai Do Fradei

10. Caffè Florian

Location: Venice

“Oldest cafe in the world built in 1720. Located in the middle of St. Mark’s Square, you’ll be paying a premium for the location but it’s worth it for a night. They have a quartet playing classical music at night so you can sit and have a coffee (and a packaged gluten-free treat) in the lit square. One of our favorite experiences enjoying Venice at night.”

11. Hotel San Gallo

Location: Venice

“Had some pizza here for lunch after a long day of walking around Venice and was told there would be no peanut allergy issues with the food. Waiter kind of waved it off, which I’ve found to be common here when I tell them about it, but nonetheless I felt safe. Pizza was excellent as well! (understood English well)”

12. Ristorante Da Tanduo

Location: Venice

“Cute restaurant on the main canal strip of Murano. Told the waiter about my peanut allergy and he said he would check with the chef about my spaghetti with red sauce. I picked a simple enough meal choice, so was totally fine, and he assured me that I would be okay with this. There were a lot of sandwiches and hors d’oeuvres in the windows at the front of the place, which seemed like a lot of potential cross contamination, so I avoided that. Overall good pasta and good with allergies! (understood English fairly well)”

13. Ristorante Al Theatro

Location: Venice

“Menu clearly marked with allergens. Waiter clear that the bread was not tree nut-safe. Made sure my daughter’s dish was tree nut-free. Warning: pine nuts not considered nuts on this menu. Food is beyond excellent”

14. Osteria alle Testiere

Location: Venice

“Thank whatever God you believe in if you can get a reservation at this joint reserved for Italy’s elevated bon vivants. It’s a restaurant worth wading through the most crowded and humid of days in Italy’s sunken city. The food is impeccably done and the waitstaff knows everything you could ask about each meal. They were confident and correct about the allergens in each dish. But, it wasn’t because they memorized it. It’s because they spend the day learning from the best and educating themselves about how each magnum opus is artfully crafted.”

15. Taverna San Lio

Location: Venice

“First dinner in Venice was a great allergy experience! The waiter made sure to check with the chef that what I had ordered was safe for me and told me they take allergies very seriously here. The food was pretty good as well but I especially appreciated the care going into the preparation here! (understood english very well)”

16. Antico Martini

Location: Venice

“We stumbled upon this place trying to go to another allergy-friendly restaurant. We came through the back door thinking it was closed. Thinking we were at that other restaurant, we gave our allergy cards to a server and they said they could accommodate my son’s food allergies. We sat down and then realized that we were not where we thought we were going to be. Turns out, the 2 restaurants are next door to each other and share hallways. (And it turns out the other restaurant was unable to accommodate my son’s food allergies). My son and I shared a plate of veggies, steak with black truffles, and a side of rice. The staff assured me everything would be safe for him. It was delicious! (I ordered a second one for my husband and other son who were at the hotel). Then the kicker was that the desserts were safe for my son! We had been in Europe the last 2 weeks and desserts and been mostly misses for him. The server walked through the dessert menu with my son and showed him what he could or could not order. My son ordered a fruit tart and was so happy!”

17. Ristorante da Raffaele

Location: Venice

“The waiter was very knowledgeable about allergies and extremely helpful. I used my allergy card but honestly didn’t need it. My hotel had also called ahead to inform the restaurant about my allergy, which was very helpful to have a native Italian speaker helping me contact the restaurant! They gave me many options for food that could be prepared dairy-free, and I chose spaghetti al pomodoro. It was delicious. They even brought me a bottle of olive oil to add to the pasta instead of cheese.”

18. Gam Gam

Location: Venice

“The waitress confirmed that this restaurant is Kosher and serves meat so there is no dairy on the premises. We had the chicken shawarma, schnitzel, fries, and tagliatelle with meat sauce and with mushrooms. Everything was delicious and the staff were very kind and helpful! I do not know about other allergens at this restaurant.”

19. Rivalonga Bar

20. Al Giardinetto da Severino

Location: Venice

“Amazing Venice restaurant that was able to make almost everything gluten-free. They are another AIC certified restaurant so they’re safe for celiacs and make sure to prepare all their gluten-free food separately. We knew this was a good place to eat because there were at least 20 gondoliers on their breaks eating here. We had bread, fresh seafood and fish, and gluten-free dessert.”

21. Trattoria Al Gazzettino

Location: Venice

“One of the first places we visited in Venice for a meal. They are very knowledgeable about celiac disease and preventing contamination. The restaurant had lots of different kinds of gluten-free pastas and amazing tiramisu. In a very lively part of Venice, so a fun dinner but, make sure you have reservations because this place gets busy!”

22. Sagra Rooftop Restaurant

Location: Venice

“This is a beautiful rooftop restaurant on top of the J.W. Marriott. Gorgeous view of Venice at sunset. We found it easy to eat here and they were very helpful, although there are some nuts on the menu. My other daughter ordered a dish and it wasn’t the one she thought she was ordering and it came with pistachios on it-they took it away right away.”

@susie who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

STAY

1. JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa

Location: Venice

“They were so helpful with our food allergies. There is a breakfast spot that offers a buffet and you can also order off the menu. We felt comfortable with the buffet and when my daughter asked about pastries (that we knew wouldn’t be safe) and the pastry chef actually surprised us and made a completely nut-free pastry – holy service!! We really loved this hotel-the grounds are expansive and it has a super family friendly vibe.”

@susie who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

2. Hotel Flora

Location: Venice

“I stayed here for a few days and there was amazing customer service. The concierge recommended restaurants for us and they called ahead to explain my allergy to the restaurants. They also had dairy-free breakfast options for me at the hotel, and the servers remembered me and my allergy each day. The breakfast food wasn’t amazing but it was enough for me-including fruit, coffee, juice, and several packaged items with ingredient labels in English (biscotti, cereal, dry biscuits, and single serve unopened jars of jam). Many of the breakfast items were also gluten-free. One downside was that we did not have a refrigerator or microwave in our room. Overall a great experience though!”
