EAT

1. Taverna Trilussa

Location: Rome

“This spot was super fun and all of the pasta is brought out in a big pan. All of the fried appetizers were fried in peanut oil but they had grilled artichokes that were made with olive and sunflower oil that were amazing and were the one place we found that our daughter could safely eat the famous artichokes of Rome!”

2. Origano Campo De’ Fiori

Location: Rome

“The staff did not flinch when we explained our daughters allergies. She ordered the lasagne but they later came back and said there was a chance of cross-contamination so made her a special pasta. She also had pizza and we felt confident in their approach. She did not have dessert. We avoid all nuts and cross-contamination.”

3. Mammò Trastevere

Location: Rome

“Great place for American-like breakfast food! They did have a lot of items with peanut butter on the menu, which made me nervous, but I told the waitress about my allergy and she assured me I would be ok and even wrote down a note to the chefs. I’ve found that writing it down to tell the chefs is more uncommon here than in the US, but this made me feel safer. The food was incredible and overall, felt fairly safe! (understood English well)”

5. Nonna Betta

Location: Rome

“This is one of the most famous places in the Jewish Ghetto-the most famous dish are the fried artichokes-we were so bummed to learn they were fried in peanut oil. So thankful that we asked. The staff helped us find other options but we had gone there just for those.”

6. Pizzería Chicco di Grano

Location: Rome

“This was the first restaurant we went to in Italy, so I was naturally skeptical at first. I was so pleased when all the staff spoke English. Everywhere in Italy does a great job labeling their menus for allergens which made me feel so much better. Just got a Margherita pizza here to start. And was safe.”

7. Mama Eat Lab

Location: Rome

“Very good food! Was told that everything here is peanut-free! They do have some pistachios and other tree nuts on the menu but everything is well labeled on the English menu. So far I’ve had the Margherita pizza, the pizza with salami (basically pepperoni), and the carbonara pasta. All incredible and was safe! (understood English well)”

8. Freni e Frizioni

Location: Rome

“This bar has one of the best aperitivi in Rome. It’s an Italian tradition to produce a buffet around “happy hour” with plates and plates of delicious dishes. All of it is free with the purchase of a drink. So, buy a negroni or Aperol spritz and enjoy shovels of vegetarian, eggless rices, pastas, and salads. The best part is that since most pasta in Italy has eggs, Freni e Frizioni provides one of the few outlets of eggless carb lovers.”

14. Ristorante “Al 34”

Location: Rome

“The waitstaff here did make sure my meal was nut-free but scoffed at the fact that I had 2 allergy cards (one saying I’m allergic to nuts and another listing all the specific nuts I’m allergic to). They also took 45 minutes to bring us our check after we asked for it. So overall good with allergies but not the best service otherwise.”

@ginag who manages tree nut allergies

15. CiPASSO Bistrot

“I wasn’t traveling with my peanut/tree nut-allergic daughter, but every menu item showed what allergens were present in them.”

16. Ombre Rosse

17. Numbs Piazza di Spagna

Location: Rome

“This is a hidden gem near the Spanish Steps and very cute inside near all the great shopping. We had paninis (although they have much more of a variety) and the waiter took extra care to ensure my daughter’s food was safe. He even took back a plate another server touched and remade my daughter’s meal to ensure there was no cross-contamination.”

20. La Lampada

“One of the best meals I have had in Rome. Our server took my chef card seriously and advised me on what I could and could not eat. He even spontaneously brought us cookies that were safe for me and made sure to tell me so. Happy to recommend!”

21. Bernini

Location: Rome

“So there wasn’t stuff on the menu strictly. We went here with our tour guide and the waitstaff knew their ingredients and informed us they could do a gluten-free pasta with any sauce that would be ok with our allergens. We ended up with the bolognese and gluten-free spaghetti, with no cheese sprinkled on top. We ate it successfully. Although to be honest, if we had more time I’d find somewhere else as the staff didn’t seem to write anything down and barely took the time for our order.”

@vkotz who manages peanut and tree nut allergies

22. Locanda Giulietta e Romeo

Location: Rome

“Our waitress took the time to go through the list of nuts I gave her that I was allergic to and make sure none of them were in my dish. Had one of my favorite meals and got to enjoy amazing fresh bread, salad, and carbonara.”

@ginag who manages tree nut allergies

23. Ristorante Il Pozzetto

Location: Rome

“Very good pasta and wine! Was told that there were no peanuts in the restaurant. Some things had tree-nuts but overall felt safe. Got the fettuccine bolognese and was very good! Have tried going back the past 2 weeks and it has looked closed down, so may be temporarily or permanently closed. (understood English well)”

@elliegust who manages a peanut allergy

24. Ago & Lillo Bistrot

Location: Rome

“Chicken at this restaurant is to DIE FOR!! All allergens very well labeled on the menu, and nothing with peanuts! Just a few items have tree-nuts. They do have a large pastry section that has a lot of peanuts and tree nuts, so I avoided that but was completely safe with the chicken and veggies I ordered. The staff is very nice and I have been back a few more times to this place and also ordered the pasta Amatriciana-incredible. Great place, felt totally safe!! (understood English well)”

@elliegust who manages a peanut allergy

25. Rione 13

30. Supplì Roma

Location: Rome

“What a find! We avoid all nuts and this place has the most fantastic street food! Pizza, cannelloni, roast chicken and lots of other delicious things! It’s a simple pick and take away place but you will not be disappointed. The chefs are serving the food and can advise. Super busy with locals, which is always a good sign, and they called out that they do not fry/cook with peanut oil which seems very popular around Roma. Enjoy!”

STAY

1. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Location: Rome

“When we checked in, they already had noted our son’s allergies on the reservation. The breakfast buffet clearly noted allergens in each dish, so there weren’t any mysteries. And, they made our son a special batch of gelato after thoroughly cleaning their machine. They went out of their way to make us all feel safe.”
