Audrey’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks
Hi! I’m Audrey and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where I safely ate with multiple food allergies including peanuts, tree nuts, egg, wheat, shrimp, chickpea, peas, barley, and poppy seeds. My finds feature places located in New Jersey, New York, California, and even South Korea! One of my favorites was Haidilao where I had my first ever hotpot experience! Growing up, it was difficult to find allergy safe Asian restaurants, but I am so grateful to have found so many safe places to eat recently! Jenna’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks
Hi! I’m Jenna and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where I safely ate with a dairy allergy. My finds feature places located in my home state of California as well as finds from a trip to Chicago. One of my favorites was Mamahuhu, a Chinese chain in SF where I had Kung Pao chicken with crunchy cucumbers and rice (hint: they have an allergen menu and excellent allergy protocols). Lunar New Year for me is about spending time with loved ones, honoring ancestors, and ushering in a new year of good luck. I was born in the year of the tiger and am excited for the year of the horse! I am a therapist in California and specialize in working with teens/adults navigating food allergies and anxiety. A myth that I would like to dispel is the idea that Asian food is not safe for people with food allergies. Asian cuisines are so varied and diverse, with many of them not using nuts or dairy in their main dishes, that it is unfair to characterize them as a monolith or assume restaurants are unable to accommodate allergies! Additionally, as someone with a milk allergy (and formerly allergic to eggs, beef, and pork as well), Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Korean restaurants have been lifelines for me growing up, often being the only places with safe options for me. Olivia’s Top Allergy-Friendly Boba Picks
Hi! I’m Olivia and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite places to get Boba Tea that I have been able to have safely with my food allergies to dairy, egg and soy. My finds feature places located in Philadelphia where I am based as well as New York and California. One of my favorites was Bopomofo in California, where I had honey oolong milk tea with oat-milk (no dairy free up charge!). As a Chinese American, Lunar New Year is one of my favorite holidays, and I look forward to enjoying a home-cooked feast with my family every year! One of my favorite foods to make is dumplings, but I also love fried rice and vegetables like choy sum. Fun fact: I am the Year of the Ram!
