Rome Tree Nut and Gluten-Free Travel Itinerary

Hi! I’m Lindsay, I manage a tree nut allergy and avoid gluten, and I went to Italy for 6 days! A highlight of the trip was the Champions League football (soccer) game – Lazio vs Bayern. My favorite restaurant was Cucina del Teatro, where I ate beef fillet with “four peppers” sauce and rosemary potatoes! Day 1

Dinner: La Mela D’oro

“Any pizza on the menu could be made gluten-free! It was so good we actually dined here twice. My non-gluten free fiancé loved the gluten-free pizza, said you couldn’t even taste the difference! When ordering the staff noticed my allergy cards on the table and asked me if I had an allergy before I even ordered food. We had a Margherita pizza and a white pie with mushrooms and sausage.”

Coffee shop: Astemio

“Just ordered a cappuccino here. It wasn’t my favorite cappuccino. They didn’t have many safe food options for me even though the menu was labeled so I waited until I found a better place with less of my allergens.”

Sightseeing: Studio Olímpico: Champions League

Day 2

Lunch: Ristorante Krugh

“Near the Vatican. Sat outside, great atmosphere, and music. They can make any pasta gluten-free! Handed my translation card and she said ‘I got the gluten-free down!’ She asked if she could take my tree nut card back to the chef. Ordered linguine with lobster and caprese. Came back and said everything would be fine! After the meal she asked if I was okay and happy, and then said she was happy that I was happy! Food was great.”

Snack and Drinks: V Essenza

“Menu is labeled with the food allergens! We came here just for a happy hour but ended up ordering an app to split, and it was beef with cheese and truffles. Was delicious!”

Dinner: That’s Amore

“Came here for a nightcap and some food and the restaurant was packed!! We sat at the bar and I had a salad and some wine. The waiter came out with bread for my fiancé and then they came out with a separate gluten-free bread for me. Very attentive to m allergies and would definitely recommend! The menu is also clearly labeled.”

Sightseeing: The Vatican Museum

Day 3

Dinner: Pasta with Nonna- Cooking Class

“Pasta with Nonna! This cooking class was incredible. When we signed up, we noticed the site had listed dietary preferences that they were able to accommodate for including tree nuts and gluten! You must contact them before the experience in order to ensure a safe meal. The class also came with a translator (because Nonna didn’t speak English), which made me feel like we had an extra level of protection. They ensured that there would be no cross-contact between the foods and did an excellent job cleaning up before eating. I just wanted to note that I am okay with touching gluten and we had agreed beforehand that I would make gluten pasta but Nonna would make my gluten-free pasta separately on the side. The first dish also had tree nuts in it. If you are uncomfortable with nuts being in the kitchen at all you must have a conversation before arriving. They were great with keeping the dishes separated to avoid cross-contact and I felt extremely comfortable. Highly recommend this experience.”

Sightseeing: Palombara Sabina

Day 4

Lunch: Il Nuovo Faro

“Menu has a gluten-free selection, which is why we stopped. Food was decent (we just had so many other good dishes elsewhere that this felt like this fell short.) Any safe meal is a win, though! Had a salmon and corn salad.”

Dinner: Cucina del Teatro

“My favorite meal I had in Rome!! Staff was knowledgeable and menu was clearly labeled. I ordered a beef dinner with potatoes. When it was time for dessert, a different waitress came out who didn’t speak any English and was trying to describe the desserts for us. My fiancé ordered a pastry dish, which I knew I couldn’t have, but I never order dessert. When my waitress found out she ran over and told us it was not safe for me (which I appreciate!). The atmosphere is really cute. The restaurant itself it tucked a little away from the road so it feels like a very private/intimate experience.”

Drinks: L’Antica Birreria Peroni

”My fiancé loves breweries, and even though I’m gluten-free, I always go for him. We stopped by here and they had 100% gluten-free beer (not just gluten-reduced).”

Sightseeing: The Pantheon

Sightseeing: Trevi Fountain

Day 5

Dinner: La Mela D’oro

“Any pizza on the menu could be made gluten-free! It was so good we actually dined here twice. My non-gluten-free fiancé loved the gluten-free pizza, said you couldn’t even taste the difference! When ordering the staff noticed my allergy cards on the table and asked me if i had an allergy before I even ordered food. We had a Margherita pizza and a white pie with mushrooms and sausage.”

Coffee Shop: Caffe Del Coronari

“Grabbed a cappuccino here!! Sat outside, and the restaurant was so cute!! My favorite coffee of the trip”

Drinks: Terrazza Les Etoiles Roma

“A must go-to restaurant!! Amazing rooftop with unreal views of St. Peter’s. We were planning on just grabbing a happy hour drink but ended up getting a cheese and meat plate. The waiter took our order and he brought me my own gluten-free bread. Another worker was walking around putting crackers and olives on all of the tables. My waiter ran over and said ‘no no no!’ because of the gluten crackers, and gave me my own bowl of olives. They were on top of it! If you go, you must make sure you go up the stairs for the full 360 view of Rome. There’s two levels to the rooftop but the elevator only stops at the first!”

Sightseeing: The Colosseum

Sightseeing: The Spanish Steps
