EAT

1. Li Galli

Location: Positano

“Amazing Michelin star restaurant in the Villa Franca hotel. Couldn’t have been safer. Chef and manager came over with every dish, which you never get at a Michelin star restaurant. Awesome wine too!!”

2. Fauno Bar

Location: Sorrento

“When I showed the waiter my allergy card, he brought over the manager. The manager let me know that he couldn’t guarantee that the salad I was ordering would be free from cross-contamination. But he reassured me that the gluten-free pasta with pomodoro sauce would be completely safe since he knows all the ingredients in the dish. He was so kind and helpful and even brought out my pasta to the table himself. This restaurant is in the center of Sorrento’s town so it’s very busy. If you eat here I would recommend talking to the manager to be assured your meal is safe! The gluten-free pasta was beyond delicious.”

3. Frankie’s Pizza Bar Sorrento Brunch & Vegan

Location: Sorrento

“Cutest little place! I showed the owner, Frankie, my nut/peanut allergy card and he actually brought out his wife, who is the primary chef. She told me that the gluten-free pizza is manufactured in the same facility as nuts which was really helpful to know. She told me that she could make me a completely safe gnocchi dish. She even brought out the gnocchi packaging so I could read the ingredients. I felt very reassured by her so we stayed for dinner and I got the gnocchi and a Greek salad. Both delicious! Also, Frankie and his wife spoke perfect English which also was very comforting.”

4. Ristorante L’Abside

Location: Amalfi

“I went during a slow time and our server was wonderful. We were able to communicate allergies and get a seafood risotto with only octopus, fish, and mussels in it because I’m allergic to other seafood! No dairy in anything. In Italy, food is love and they are actually very aware of gluten-free diets because there are many people in Italy with celiac disease. The wine also doesn’t hurt.”

5. Ristorante Il Geranio di Gaeta Lucio & C. Sas

Location: Capri

“Extremely helpful, especially with our nut allergy. They were great at helping us know which dishes to avoid and notified the chef! Even brought out a separate dessert for our group just for my husband.”

6. Bistrot F.lli Pansa

Location: Amalfi

“We visited this cafe on our honeymoon to Amalfi. I showed the waitress my allergy translation information card and she told me that dining was no issue, informing me of which dishes to avoid on their menu as they contained nuts. She spoke to the chef who prepared our meal separately. They also offer gluten-free choices if you need them. Amazing view of the cathedral, too.”

7. Penisola Experience

Location: Vico Equense

“Arguably the best meal I’ve ever eaten—ever! I found this experience through Airbnb experiences. The head chef, Cristiano, hosts you at his family’s home and makes the meal with you completely from scratch. There is a slightly extra charge to cover gluten-free ingredients, but it is so worth it! My entire meal was gluten-free. I fried my eggplants first so there was no cross-contamination in the oil and used all separate appliances for my pasta and dessert. It was truly delicious! Absolute 10/10.”

9. Zass

Location: Laurito

“Would go here for just the insane views, but the tremendous food helped too. Waiters spoke clear English and made me feel very safe.”

10. Ristorante la Basilica

Location: Sorrento

“Visited Sorrento Italy in May while on a cruise. They catered an allergen-free meal for my daughter with grilled chicken and veggies. The cruise guide seemed aware of food allergies and made an announcement first to check for anyone with food allergies. And the restaurant followed through. There is greater awareness in Europe and I found the EU has a list of 14 allergens that restaurants are supposed to indicate on their menus. Education is the key!”

12. Al Dente – Spaghetteria

Location: Salerno

“Great pasta made in a kitchen that you can see into! Had the bruschetta to start and then Amatriciana for dinner and was very good! Waiter told me I would be safe with my peanut allergy and I was!”

STAY

1. La Fenice

Location: Positano

“This family-owned bed and breakfast is amazing. I notified them of my celiac disease before we arrived and they were incredibly prepared. Every morning they made an incredible breakfast including a basket full of packaged gluten-free breads, croissants, and crackers to accompany the fresh eggs, fruits, meats, cheeses, and more. We ate like queens at this place every morning and ate fresh sandwiches and salads for lunches on a few days too when we stayed around the property. One of the few bed and breakfasts with a private beach. The only con is the amount of stairs at the property. We had an ocean view and our own private terrace for the most reasonable price we could find in Positano. This place is an absolute steal.”

2. Tui Sensimar Grand Hotel Nastro Azzurro

Location: Piano di Sorrento

“My wife and I came to the TUI Blue resort as part of our honeymoon. We worked with our travel agent to contact the hotel in advance. On their website it states they cater for people with allergies, including nut allergies like mine. On arrival, we were blown away by how accessible the all-inclusive package was to people with allergies. The Maitre d’, Enzo, looked after us from start to finish, liaising with his staff to make sure allergy protocols were followed in the kitchen and in the restaurant—nothing seemed to be too much trouble. On the breakfast and lunch buffets, and the evening a la carte menus, all the major allergens were highlighted—the only thing we were advised to avoid were the desserts. In the starters and mains throughout the week, there was only one dish that contained nuts (a pasta dish containing pistachios), however, the kitchen prepared our food in a completely separate station to avoid cross-contamination. A pleasure to experience, and I would recommend this resort to anyone with an allergy!”

3. Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

Location: Sorrento

“I stayed here for 4 nights with my family. The first day I showed them my nut/peanut allergy card and they remembered my allergy for the rest of the trip. I safely ate lunches and dinners here. FYI, the breakfast is buffet style.”

@swolfe who manages celiac and peanut and tree nut allergies

4. La Tonnarella

Location: Sorrento

“Great staff and great with allergies. They were very accommodating. Both their main restaurant and beach restaurant had gluten-free pasta and breads!”
