Peanut, Macadamia Nut, Pecan, Pine Nut, Pistachio, and Walnut-Free Germany Travel Guide

Hi! I’m Bella, I studied abroad in Berlin, Germany while managing peanut, macadamia nut, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, and walnut allergies. I also traveled to Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, and Frankfurt, where I found many safe restaurants, treats, cafés, and grocery stores. I shared all my finds on the Spokin app and they’re all also featured in this guide. During Oktoberfest, one of my favorite local cafes was Die Kuchenmeisterei where I had a traditional Bavarian breakfast, listened to live music, and chatted with the incredibly kind and allergy aware owners. A fun thing to do if you are in Cologne during the holidays is visit the super quaint Heinzels Wintermärchen market in Altstadt! RESTAURANTS

Zollpackhof

Zollpackhof

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Typical München Food—cozy Biergarten on the water with nice shade from the trees and an indoor area. A bit expensive but great beer and Weißwurst. Our group also shared the Schweinshaxe (shown here) which came with two potato dumplings.”

Osmanya

Osmanya

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Was invited here for a work dinner and the staff ensured there were no nuts in any dish at our table to make sure our party was comfortable. Had stuffed vine leaves as a starter, grilled eggplant as a main, and a fruit platter for dessert. The only drawback is high risk of contamination with pistachios.”

Weisse Kebap Haus

Weisse Kebap Haus

Location: Berlin, Germany

“No nuts and everything is labeled and vegetarian! I‘ve had their halloumi durums and vegan Döner in brot! And super yummy selection of sauces and veggies! Note: High risk of cross-contamination for those with specific vegetable, spice, soy, milk and wheat allergies though.”

TERAS Döner Kebab

TERAS Döner Kebab

“A local favorite for a reason! Affordable prices, delicious, big portions, comparatively large variety of platters and to-go options, AND a fully written allergen key! A must!”

MOD ROCKERS ROASTERY & BAGELS

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Very knowledgeable and friendly staff! Bagels are a bit small but good quality. Coffee is ok.”

Mizu Ramen

Mizu Ramen

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Allergy lettering for peanuts is different here (B=peanuts). H is still tree nuts and G (don’t always see this in restaurants) is lupine. None of the dishes had any of these allergens. It is on the pricier end compared to other student meals but the quality was good. Nice treat! Pictured: unagi don and tonkatsu ramen (great broth!) with a lychee Schorle”

Bao Gao Club 包餃會

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Super attentive staff (triple checked allergies) and wonderful quality baos (had the pork mushroom)—on the pricier end but a great once in a while treat.”

Café Hermann Eicke

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Great coffee! Simple menu.”

Cocolo Ramen

Cocolo Ramen

Location: Berlin, Germany

“No nuts at all and the hype is totally worth it! But expect a long line, even immediately at 6PM. The pork and the fish broths have really great flavor depth and aren’t too salty. Wish they included more veggies though.”

Witty's Currywurst

Witty’s Currywurst

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Completely nut-free and made to order! All ingredients are labeled on their website—only allergens there are sunflower oil, wheat, soy, mustard, and eggs (as of 2023). Texture-wise it’s not my favorite but the sauce is tangy, sweet, and has a little kick of spice.”

Dos Pescados I - Tegel

Dos Pescados I – Tegel

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Positive review only because it ended up being a safe meal. Allergies are labeled but it took significant back and forth to explain why that was important allergy wise and get information on the oil they used (as of October 2023—rapeseed and sunflower).”

Mmaah - Korean BBQ Express

Mmaah – Korean BBQ Express

“On the pricey end but great quality and safe—very popular so be sure to get there early! Only had plain nigiris though because they were so busy and I wasn’t completely sure what additional things they had added to the bowls. Update: 2nd visit — safely shared an unagi don and salmon platter.”

Shiso Burger Auguststrasse

Shiso Burger Auguststrasse

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Love the ebi burger, salmon salad, and lychee mixer! It can get pretty pricey pretty fast, but it’s an amazing and super allergy aware option. Staff is very knowledgeable and the punches of flavor are immaculate.”

CUCCIS S-Bhf. Alexanderplatz, Regio-Bahnsteig 1/2 West

CUCCIS S-Bhf. Alexanderplatz, Regio-Bahnsteig 1/2 West

Pondji Pop Up

“I am always craving pao de queijo and Pondji is an amazing new pop up dedicated to bringing this wonderful Portuguese treat to Berliners in traditional and experimental forms! No nuts here!”

Fiete Behnersens V-Cake

Location: Dresden, Germany

“Unfortunately no allergy matrix directly on the menu, but they seemed pretty knowledgeable. I didn’t end up ordering any food because I was worried about cross-contamination with walnuts (small kitchen). They did however have great drinks!”

Tawajin Al-Fakhara

Location: Dusseldorf, Germany

“Such an incredible, homey spot for Egyptian food! Our friend was feeling homesick and brought us to this quaint, authentic restaurant and the family cooked us a bit of everything—they were incredible with my allergies as well. Could not recommend more!”

Apfelwein-Wirtschaft Fichtekränzi

“Cozy, quiet little pub tucked away in a Frankfurt alley. We had the highlights of their asparagus menu (Spargel season) and were definitely satisfied. Prices were satisfied and the servers were mindful of allergies.”

“No nuts here but not the best I’ve had. Was a bit too salty but super affordable and accessible, especially for a small college town. Friendly staff.”

City Döner

Steineckes Heidebrot Backstube GmbH & Co. KG

Steineckes Heidebrot Backstube GmbH & Co. KG

Location: Hennigsdorf, Germany

Brauhaus Em Kölsche Boor

Location: Cologne, Germany

“They have an allergy menu! And absolutely nothing has nuts (when you receive the allergy menu look for Erdnüsse & Schalenfrüchte) except for the apple strudel—Himmel und Äad is a specific dish to Cologne and it’s really great here! The Kölsch is also wonderful and comes in small glasses. Tender blood sausage, warm apple “sauce”, seasoned mashed potatoes, and onions marinated in malt beer.”

Hong Kong Dim 香港店

Hong Kong Dim 香港店

“Wonderful family owned spot near the Hansaring station. Staff was very knowledgeable about allergies and the food was pretty decent. Do note that it is on the pricier side though for lunch.”

Bootshaus

Bootshaus

Location: Cologne, Germany

“Wonderful Kölsch and Reibekuchen with apple sauce—safe and very knowledgeable waitstaff”

Burger King - Neumarkt

Burger King – Neumarkt

Location: Cologne, Germany

“German Burger King is really incredible for plant-based options. They have a successful partnership with the Vegetarian Butcher and it’s really quite delicious and filling. However, Neumarkt is not my favorite branch—the one in the Köln Hauptbahnhof is far better. Because it’s a major shopping area and always busy, they can get very careless with cross-contamination (I found 2 stray pieces of cheese and bacon in the side vegetarian salad that came with the plant-based burger). Last I checked (August 2023), they don’t have any nuts or nut oils in their burgers/sandwiches/nuggets.”

Die Kuchenmeisterei

“Coffee is great, croissants are large, and the quality is good, but not the best in the city.”

Catnip Coffee

Catnip Coffee

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Only got a drink here and was honestly a little freaked out by a peanut cake. I’m not sure I’d ever eat there if allergens were present because it’s a tiny preparation area. Felt ok with drinks though and the cats were cute.”

“Everything labeled! Reasonable prices and free WiFi near Erfurt Uni!”

Café Hibiskus

Café Hibiskus

Location: Cologne, Germany

“Completely vegan cafe and extremely knowledgeable about allergies! I had a coffee and chocolate pear cake slice. I was informed that they do use peanuts and walnuts seasonally and other nuts regularly; however, they were sure to wash everything before serving our food and use a separate, clean knife without us asking.”

TREAT

Café Komine

Café Komine

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Was almost tempted to keep this a secret because it’s so hard already to get a table here. This bakery is truly something special—a mix of fine French pastries and Japanese flavors. I can’t even pick a favorite on their menu because they’re all so wonderful. The chef is super nice and very knowledgeable about allergies. All allergies are also on the website for pre-orders (highly recommended as things sell out fast). My favorite here is the black sesame cake.”

CANAL - Linienstraße

CANAL – Linienstraße

Du Bonheur

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Gorgeous pastries—extremely aware about allergies. They even have a nut-free binder. I love their macarons, almond croissants and raspberry croissants!”

Chipi Chipi Bombón

Location: Berlin, Germany

“The dulce de leche was so wonderfully strong and the staff was super aware of allergens. I sometimes find it easier/less complicated to just say I’m allergic to all nuts, and even so they walked me one by one through each of the flavors and ingredients to make sure I felt safe. Only 3 had nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios).”

OOH! Cookies

OOH! Cookies

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Might have rebranded to Baked in Berlin or NY Cookies, but same address Dorotheenstraße 43. I never get cookies here because it’s a small shop with one shared oven for all products. Their fall/winter menu currently has walnuts and macadamia nuts, but their coffees are incredible.”

2D Cafe Always Together

2D Cafe Always Together

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Only nuts in the kitchen are pistachios. I was a little nervous to get anything here but they assured me there was only one dessert with nuts and additionally took extra time to walk me through the ingredients for the dessert I wanted and potential contaminants. I safely had a coffee and matcha croffle—also super cute place!”

Les Pâtisseries de Sébastien

Les Pâtisseries de Sébastien

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Incredible! Everything is labeled! The quality is wonderful and the baker is so kind! Definitely try their croissants and baguettes!”

épi boulangerie patisserie

épi boulangerie patisserie

Location: Cologne, Germany

“Wonderful French bakery with no peanuts—walnuts are used only for walnut bread—not too many almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts but they’re definitely present—safely had Kaiserbrötchen, baguettes, and Croissants here— yum! 1 little warning: the person I spoke with was not sure where the chocolate was sourced and potential contaminants so I would still avoid the pain au chocolat.”

Bäckerei & Konditorei Plentz - Bäckerei & Café

Bäckerei & Konditorei Plentz – Bäckerei & Café

Location: Oranienburg, Germany
“All labeled! Wonderful coffee and baked goods.”

GROCERY STORES

BIO COMPANY

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Interestingly not all Bio markets are more expensive than Rewe/Edeka and sometimes Aldi/Lidl when things are on sale. Bio markets are supermarkets that focus on organic products (some exclusively organic). They also tend to have more gluten-free items and (sometimes not always) 100% nut-free/allergen friendly items with more may contain statements. Both Bio Company and Dennis Bio also have household items and specialty products, as well as a bakery section. Generally though this can be on the more expensive side.”

LIDL

Location: Berlin, Germany

“Another Germany wide grocery store chain (smaller selection usually—they will have basic things). Great for budgeted prepackaged foods and household items. Fresh fruits and veggies are really hit or miss. While not all prepackaged items have may contain statements, a good amount of them do. Great for students.”

REWE

Location: Hamburg, Germany

“One of the largest and nicest Rewes. Rewe is one of the biggest grocery store chains in Germany and has a wide variety of items. The Ja brand (the budget line at Rewe) is pretty good at having most products labeled with may contain statements.”

ALDI SÜD

ALDI SÜD

Location: Cologne, Germany

“Review for the chain: not the biggest selection of food but it will certainly give your basics + snacks for reasonable prices. Everything is clearly labeled.”

EDEKA

Location: Munich, Germany

“One of the other largest grocery store chains in Germany with a wide selection is Edeka. Their budget brand is Gut & Gunstig; however, their allergen labeling (may contain wise) is not very consistent across items. Edeka is great for vegetables and fruits, but I usually have an easier time at Rewe. Edeka is also on the more expensive side.”
