Nut, Milk, Egg, Soy, Shellfish, Wheat, Seed, Banana, and Barley-Free San Fransisco Top Picks

Hi! I’m Janine and I recently traveled to San Francisco, California with my family. I found some safe spots to eat with my son’s peanut, tree nut, wheat, milk, egg, soy, shellfish, sesame, banana, mustard and barley allergies as well as eosinophilic esophagitis concerns. All the restaurants are also all featured in this guide! One of our favorites was Historic John’s Grill, where the attention to our needs was clearly a priority, the chef made a complete safe meal, including a hamburger, baked potato and carrots. A fun thing to do if you are in the area is to drive or take a shuttle across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Muir Woods preserve and walk amongst the huge redwood trees; the walk is easy and accessible for all. The Bench

Location: Del Monte Forest, California

“We had a detailed discussion with our server about what the chef could make safe. The server was back and forth with the chef to confirm our son’s meal. He had a steak made in a separate saucepan with carrots. He enjoyed the meal. The sever then offered to check on the house-made sorbet, but the dessert chef confirmed the chance of cross contact was high, so we skipped it and had dessert at our Airbnb. It was a special evening regardless with a gorgeous view of the Pebble Beach 18th green!”

John’s Grill

Location: San Francisco, California

“Our family had a great experience here. As soon as we checked in with the host, they asked about the allergies I noted on our reservation. Another employee at that time approached us to also join in the discussion about how and what they could safely accommodate. They were knowledgeable and double checked with the chef. Once we were seated, our server repeated our son’s order and would again confirm with the chef. By the time the food arrived at our table, we had spoken to 5 restaurant staff to ensure the order was clear and how the food was being prepared. Our son wanted a hamburger, carrots and a baked potato. We were all extremely pleased with our experience. This was our first dinner in San Francisco and they set the bar very high.”

The Ritz-Carlton

Location: San Francisco, California

“We ate at The Lounge, where the staff was very allergy-aware. I noted our allergies when I made the reservation; when the server approached our table she had already spoken to the chef and had 3 full meal options to offer to my son. It was pretty amazing and thoughtful this was done prior to our arrival. Our son choose both a hamburger (we brought a safe roll) and gluten-free pasta with a safe sauce made from scratch. He’s never had a sauce like this and gobbled it up, he was happily stuffed and in great spirits after this special meal. We specifically look for dining options at the Ritz wherever we travel bc of the level of awareness and detail.”

Carmel’s Bistro Giovanni

Location: Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

“We noted allergies in the reservation and what our son would like to eat if possible. The day before our reservation we received a call noting that the gluten-free pasta had egg and that would not be an option. We spoke about other options and determined a chicken breast could be safely prepared in a separate saucepan. We brought our own prepared GF pasta to complete his meal. The staff was knowledgeable and we appreciated their proactive call ahead of our arrival so we could plan for a safe and fulfilling meal. We would recommend and return.”

Chipotle Mexican Grill

Location: San Jose, California

“While on vacation we ate lunch here on our drive from San Francisco to Monterey/Carmel. Staff followed the usual protocol to prepare a safe bowl for our son. The staff was very allergy aware. This location was very clean and the staff were accommodating.”

We also visited the Santa Cruz and Millbrae locations.

Whole Foods Market

“This Whole Foods was a few blocks from our Airbnb. A good selection of allergy-friendly items.”

Trader Joe’s

Location: San Francisco, California
