Nut-Free and Gluten-Free San Diego Top Picks

Hi! I’m Emily and I recently traveled to San Diego! I was able to find many spots to safely eat with my allergies to peanut and tree nut allergies and my gluten intolerance and shared them on the Spokin app—they are all featured in this guide! One of my favorites was Chani’s Donuts, where I safely had allergen-free mini donuts! If you’re planning to travel to San Diego, make sure you stop by Pacific Beach and grab tacos at Oscar’s Tacos on the way! Chani’s Donuts

“Top 9 allergen free mini donut bar in San Diego! Everything is AMAZING! You can pick from a variety of toppings and drizzles for each of your mini donuts! We got a bunch in a box and they were all amazing (loved the raspberry + chocolate) Highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area!”

El Tianguis Rolled Taquitos

“100% gluten-free and nut-free taquito shop in San Diego! The taquitos are so good! They have different variations and all are totally gluten-free! I have a mix of chicken and potato stuffed taquitos and pico guac as a topping. They are advertised as dedicated gluten-free, and I double-checked with the staff and was told everything is also nut-free! Definitely, a must-stop if you’re in San Diego!”

Eureka!

“Had a great experience dining outdoors at Eureka! The kitchen is completely free of peanuts, and the only two nuts in the facility, almonds and pine nuts, are kept separately and added at the end of the dishes they are on. The fryer is not safe for celiac or wheat allergies, so I couldn’t get fries or chips, but you can get all the burgers on lettuce and swap sides for lots of other gluten-free options! I usually don’t like lettuce wrapped burgers, but this one was actually so good! I had some questions about the menu that I asked our waiter and the manager actually overheard and came over to say she would personally ensure there was no cross-contamination with my meal! Highly recommend Eureka!”

Monello

“A fantastic restaurant in Little Italy! They have few nuts and are extremely attentive to food allergies! They have gluten-free gnocchi and penne and can make a few of their pasta dishes gluten-free! I expected them to be able to adapt more of the dishes, but many of the sauces contain flour. The food is expensive but so good! I had a penne bolognese and some of their fun cocktails! They also have great pizza (although can’t remember if there was a gluten-free crust option or not). Definitely recommend if you’re visiting San Diego!”

Moonshine Beach

“Super fun bar in Pacific Beach! There’s a huge dance floor and great music. Everything was very clean and no nuts. I got classic bar drinks and was totally safe!”

Oceana Coastal Kitchen

“Love this restaurant! This restaurant far exceeded my expectations and was such a great allergy find! There are no peanuts on the menu and the only nut in the kitchen is almonds! The menu is clearly labeled with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free symbols, so it was very easy to order a safe gluten-free meal! The waiter confirmed with the chef about my allergies and then came back to let me know everything was safe! I had the braised short ribs with polenta, and it was one of the best meals I’ve had! I was also safely able to have the creme brûlée! All the desserts are made in house, and there were no nuts on the menu (except almonds in one biscotti that was a topping on one dessert!) Highly recommend if you are in San Diego!
Update: we came back a second night and I was able to safely have sushi, which hasn’t happened in so long! The waiter even checked to make sure I was safely able to have sesame seeds, which were on one of the gluten-free rolls. “

Starry Lane Bakery

“This bakery is free of the top 9 allergens!!! I tried their hot cocoa cupcake (seasonal) and their cinnamon roll! It was by far the best cinnamon roll I have ever had—it was very flaky and not too dense like a lot of gluten-free baked goods can be! The cupcakes were really good too! It’s in a weird part of San Diego, so a little out of the way but so worth it to visit!”

True Food Kitchen

“I have had nothing but fantastic experiences at True Food Kitchens throughout the U.S.! They have a super clearly labeled menu with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian symbols, and any nuts that are in a dish are clearly stated! I always alert the waiter of my food allergies, and they make my meal in a separate kitchen area! The steak tacos at this location are so good!”

Zen 5

“100% nut-free sushi! This is a small but very affordable sushi spot in Downtown Pacific Beach. I was told nothing had nuts! I avoided any tempura or crab rolls and stuck with most of the salmon and avocado based ones and was totally fine with gluten! Not the nicest place, but the portions are good sized and it’s super affordable!”

Bencotto

“This is the sister restaurant of Monello (next door!) Similar Italian menu but this one has a few more options and is a bit more upscale. Monello and Bencotto both have AMAZING pasta and you can make almost every pasta gluten-free! They also have gluten-free gnocchi! We got the caesar salad (comes with a parm crisp), a few drinks, and gluten-free gnocchi which was so good! Highly recommend!”

Citys Tacos

“A great taco chain in San Diego! They have one taco that comes with almonds as a topping but other than that everything is nut-free! The menu is labeled with allergen symbols which was super helpful. Everything was so good! I felt comfortable as the almonds were kept in a separate area and I asked staff to change gloves. Definitely recommend, and there’s a location right next to Petco Park!”

Eggies

“This is an ADORABLE breakfast sandwich shack in San Diego! 🍳 It is so cute! And the entire shack is completely nut-free!! They have fresh squeezed OJ and a handful of breakfast sandwich options. They also have an egg-in-a-jar option (hashbrowns, bacon, cheese, poached eggs) that’s gluten-free! It was such a fun find and so good! Definitely recommend visiting!”

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood

“Super good taco chain in San Diego! Everything is nut-free and almost everything is gluten-free! The tacos are huge and so good! I got a mix of beef + shrimp + chicken. You also have to try their ceviche!”

Rustic Root

“Fun spot for Happy Hour in Gaslamp! They have great drinks and apps. Some tree nuts but not many and I felt comfortable with the wait staff. I got a salad since they didn’t have many gluten-free options which was good and my friends loved their flatbread.”
