Nut-Free Iceland Top Picks

Hi! I’m Lindsay, and I recently traveled to Iceland for the second time! I found many safe spots to eat while managing peanut, cashew, pistachio, walnut, and pecan allergies and shared them on the Spokin app—all of my finds are also all featured in this guide. One of my favorites was Loo.koo.mas, where my kids had this delicious donut dessert! A fun thing to do if you are in Iceland is snorkeling between the tectonic plates in Silfra. Arctic Rafting

Arctic Rafting

Location: Selfoss, Iceland

“We did white-water rafting through this tour operator on the Hvítá River about 90 minutes from Reykjavik. You can order food and drinks at an on-site restaurant afterwards, which is convenient as many tours run over lunchtime and there aren’t many food options nearby. Nothing contained nuts, and it was a great way to wrap up our adventure!”

Sky Lagoon

Sky Lagoon

Location: Kópavogur, Iceland

“Must-do experience when you visit Reykjavik! Super clean and can accommodate an allergy to nuts. Less food options than Blue Lagoon, but the 7-step ritual was so much fun, and the views of the North Atlantic were stunning. The 7-step ritual has one step that is a body scrub containing sweet almond oil. Not an issue for us, but keep in mind if you have an almond allergy. “

Troll Expeditions Silfra

Troll Expeditions Silfra

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

“We snorkeled the Silfra fissure with Troll. Since we are using snorkels, I asked about cleaning methods for the mouthpieces, and they sterilize everything with an alcohol solution between uses. After snorkeling, they offer hot chocolate and candy bars. They know the allergy information for everything! Hot chocolate was completely nut-free, and they said the candy bars contained traces of nuts (it ended up being almonds and hazelnuts, which were safe). Fantastic tour guide and absolutely amazing experience!”

Icelandic Street Food

“This restaurant carries 3 different soups (lamb stew, spicy tomato, and shellfish) with or without bread or a bread bowl, rolled pancakes, and an Icelandic “Happy Marriage” cake (rhubarb and oats). No nuts in the restaurant. Perfect for a cold day!”

“There are a lot of hazelnuts on the menu and some items containing almond, pistachio, and cashew. Of those, my kids are only allergic to pistachio and cashew. I emailed with the restaurant ahead of our trip, and they assured me the allergy was no issue. They were very proactive and knowledgeable about the allergy and able to make all the dishes nut-free. Great food and service!”

Finsen Matur & Vín

Finsen Matur & Vín

“My daughter originally ordered a steak sandwich here, although they mainly serve seafood. The chef wasn’t certain about the safety of the bread, so she just got a steak. Only the baked Camembert in the small courses contains peanuts.”

Kastrup Restaurant

Kastrup Restaurant

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

“Fantastic Nordic restaurant that is excellent with nut allergies, and all nuts can be avoided. They have walnuts on one salad and pine nuts, almonds, and hazelnuts on the menu. We didn’t order dessert, but I think there were safe options. Service and food were great!”

Pósthús Food Hall & Bar

Pósthús Food Hall & Bar

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

“Pósthús is a food hall containing several restaurants. You have to check with each one, but we were able to find safe food.”

Loo.koo.mas

Loo.koo.mas

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

“I emailed with this restaurant prior to our trip, and they assured me they could accommodate us. They make these delicious donut-like balls that can be topped in a variety of ways. They have several loose toppings grouped together under a separate glass case. They included walnuts, a variety of chocolate chips, etc. We avoided it because the walnuts were in close proximity to all the other loose toppings. There are several sauces, including two nutty ones: a chocolate sauce (which is hazelnut-based) and a pistachio cream. The staff was extremely helpful as to what was safe and what should be avoided. The absolute best one my kids could eat had a caramel sauce, a vanilla cream, and cinnamon. They also have ice cream (no nutty flavors), but we were advised to avoid the chocolate one until they found out hazelnut wasn’t an issue. It was amazing, and they went above and beyond to help us.”

Reykjavík Fish Restaurant

Reykjavík Fish Restaurant

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

“Nut-free restaurant! I did see that they sell some desserts under a cloche at the register that are probably from a local bakery. The desserts are not safe, but everything on the regular menu is.”
