Celiac-Safe Iceland Travel Itinerary

Hi! I’m Emily, I have celiac disease, and I recently went to Iceland for a week! A highlight of my trip was getting to see the Northern Lights! I love how celiac-friendly Reykjavik was, I was able to eat at so many places. We had long days traveling on a bus so we ate a lot packed lunches and snacks, but we still made time to try out a few places! My favorite restaurant was Kol, where I let the Chef surprise me with my dish! Follow me on Spokin @glutenfreeky and follow me on Instagram and Tiktok @gluten_freeky.

DAY 1

Lunch: Lava Restaurant in Blue Lagoon

“I had the fresh catch, which was cod on the day I went. The servers were so knowledgeable and also offered me gluten-free bread but let me know it was not cross-contamination safe, so I declined, but they were very helpful indicating what was celiac safe.”

Dinner: Monkeys

“I had the salmon ceviche and the mandarin for dessert! Food was spectacular and the servers were happy to accommodate!”

Sightseeing: Blue Lagoon

Sightseeing: Northern Lights Tour

DAY 2

Coffee: Kaffitar

“Good cappuccinos!”

Dinner: Austur Indíafélagið

“No items marked gluten-free on the menu but the staff was very helpful! I had the Shahi Korma and it was delicious!”

Sightseeing: Golden Circle Tour

Sightseeing: Secret Lagoon

DAY 3

Breakfast: Cafe Loki

“For a traditional Icelandic breakfast, this is the perfect place! They have all gluten-free items marked on the menu. I had the gluten-free ‘healthy cake’ and had to try the famous fermented shark and Brennevin! The restaurant has amazing views of the church too!”

Dinner: Kol

“This was the best meal I had in Iceland. I couldn’t choose which of the MANY gluten free small plates, so I chose the Chef’s Choice Trio, which can be made gluten free. They brought me burrata, smoked salmon and beef carpaccio. All three were spectacular and I felt very safe eating there.”

Sightseeing: Rainbow Road

DAY 4

Sightseeing: Kalta Ice Cave

DAY 5

Dinner: Black Crust Pizzeria

“Delicious gluten-free pizza! They cook it on a separate pan so there’s no risk of cross-contamination!”

Sightseeing: South Shore Tour

DAY 6

Coffee: Kaffibrenslan

“Great place to stop for a latte!”

Dinner: Krua Thai

“I ordered the gluten free fried rice, and while nothing is marked on the menu the staff worked with me to find something gluten-free. They also said they had gluten-free soy sauce, but it came out in an unmarked dish so we stayed away.”
