Jersey Shore Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

jerseyshorehero

Hi everyone! I’m Brooke, I’m 20 years old, from the suburbs of Philadelphia and I have Celiac disease! My family travels to the Jersey Shore every summer and I have found some amazing Celiac-safe spots that we come back to year after year. It’s truly not a weekend at Long Beach Island without a breakfast sandwich from Surfside Coffee House or a delicious milkshake and burger from The Woohoo! And when we’re in Avalon, I simply can’t pass up the Killer Caramel ice cream at Buccaneer. I reviewed all my favorite Jersey Shore spots on the Spokin app! You can follow me there and on Instagram @celiactivist to stay up to date with my travel adventures!

DAY 1: AVALON + STONE HARBOR

Untitled design (1).png

Breakfast: Toastique

Location: Stone Harbor

This is a hidden gem in Stone Harbor! Their menu states that they offer gluten-free toast, and the staff informed me that they have a separate toaster. I requested that a new container of cream cheese be opened for my toast, and the staff was very willing to do so. The employee who took my order ended up making my food herself to ensure it wasn’t cross contaminated. They also put my toast in a plastic container instead of on the wooden boards that they serve the regular toast on. Not only was the staff kind and helpful, but the food was incredible!

Lunch: Green Cuisine

Location: Stone Harbor

Green Cuisine is the best place in Stone Harbor if you’re looking for a fresh and delicious meal. They offer salads, smoothies, and wraps using organic ingredients with tons of gluten-free options. They know how to prevent cross-contamination and take care of customers with celiac disease!

Treat: Buccaneer Ice Cream

Location: Avalon

Buccaneer is my favorite ice cream shop down in Avalon. There are laminated allergy sheets for both the flavors and the toppings available upon request. When you tell them you have an allergy, the staff will get a clean scoop and use a fresh bin to get your ice cream. A lot of places don’t have allergy lists, so I’m grateful for Buccaneer and their clarity with ingredients!

Dinner: Circle Pizza

Location: Avalon

Circle Pizza has always been a favorite spot for us, and they have some great gluten-free options. They will cook the gluten free pizza on a tray and use a separate cutter, although it does go in the same oven. They also have gluten-free rolls for cheesesteaks, and gluten-free chicken fingers, although I haven’t tried those. Overall, I felt very safe eating here and would definitely return.

DAY 2: LONG BEACH ISLAND

Breakfast: Surfside Coffeehouse

Location: Long Beach Island

They offer gluten-free bagels for sandwiches, as well as gluten-free donuts prepared offsite and wrapped in their own case. When you order, if you tell them you have an allergy, they will make sure to change their gloves and use a new knife. They also have a separate toaster for gluten-free bagels. My family always comes here to get bagel sandwiches in the morning before the beach. They even have three kinds of gluten-free bagels!

Lunch: The Greenhouse Cafe

Location: Long Beach Island

The Greenhouse is the best spot on Long Beach Island for safe gluten-free food, especially breakfast! They offer gluten-free waffles and pancakes made on a separate are of the griddle, as well as gluten-free toast in a separate toaster. They offer gluten-free pizza, wraps and sandwiches on the lunch and dinner menu as well. The staff always knows what to do when I mention I have Celiac. This is absolutely our go-to spot on the island.

Dinner: The WooHoo

Location: Long Beach Island

The Woohoo is the best spot on Long Beach Island for people with allergies. When you order at the window, they give you a sheet to mark your allergies down! They offer gluten-free buns for burgers, and their french fries are fried in a dedicated fryer, so they’re safe for people with Celiac. They understand cross contamination and take precautions to eliminate it. They also have certain ice cream flavors that are in the “allergy flavor” and use dedicated, clean scoops for. The staff is always so kind and helpful when I order. I feel so safe eating here, and come every time I’m at the shore!

DAY 3: LONG BEACH ISLAND

Brunch: Dio’s

Location: Long Beach Island

The owner’s granddaughter has Celiac, so they understand how to make safe gluten-free food! They have gluten free bread and wraps, as well as a dedicated fryer for french fries! For breakfast they offer lots of breakfast sandwiches. The owners are so kind and I really appreciate all of the options they offer!

Dinner: The Beach House Restaurant

Location: Long Beach Island

This is the perfect restaurant if you’re looking for a nice, delicious seafood dinner. The staff is super helpful, and they offer lots of gluten-free options. They have gluten-free pasta that they will cook in a fresh pot of water for you. We tried the seafood vodka pasta and it was pretty incredible. Such a nice dining experience and so grateful for safe options and a kind staff.

DAY 4: CAPE MAY

Breakfast: Out There Coffee

What an adorable coffee shop! They offer gluten-free cakes and specialty sweet bread loaves, and prepares them safely for people with Celiac. All the baked goods were delicious, and it was so nice to have an option while visiting Cape May!

Lunch: Lucky Bones

Location: Long Beach Island

They mark gluten-free options on the menu, and there are quite a few! They have gluten-free buns, but no dedicated fryer. They definitely understood Celiac and how to prevent cross contamination. A great family friendly spot in Cape May!
