Seattle Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

seattlehero

Hi! I’m Emily, and I spent a week in Seattle this summer for my 21st birthday. I found so many great spots that accommodated my peanut, tree nut, and gluten allergies. Some of my favorite spots from the trip were GhostFish Brewing Company, a dedicated gluten-free brewery, nut-free ice cream at Molly Moon’s, and Capitol Cider, a dedicated gluten and nut-free restaurant! We visited lots of restaurants but also spent time sightseeing at the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the Chihuly Glass Museum. I reviewed all my spots from the trip on the Spokin app! DAY 1

Travel: Southwest Airlines + Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is very clean with lots of snack options & safe foods! Flew Southwest which was great as always and the people working at the help desk for per-board passes were super accommodating! Ever since they got rid of peanuts several years ago this is my favorite airline to fly! They let you pre-board and wipe down your seat and only serve pretzels as snacks on flights. The staff is willing to help and make me feel safe, especially when I fly by myself. I always let them know about my allergies when I board, that I am flying alone, and that I carry epi pens.

Hotel: Belltown Inn

Belltown Inn was super clean and there were lots of younger couples staying there who were also sightseeing. It’s fairly close to the Space Needle and a light rail stop to easily get to the airport. They had a decent sized mini fridge in the room! There are a bunch of bars one street over, so it was fun to go bar hopping and walk back.

domani.png

Dinner: Domani Pizzeria

Super authentic Italian food in Queen Anne with both gluten-free pasta and pizza! I had their gluten-free pasta carbonara. There are very few nuts, but they were super thorough on walking through what was safe and writing my allergies down for the kitchen. It’s also in walking distance to Molly Moon’s, a nut-free ice cream shop, and Kerry Park, the best sunset views in Seattle!

Treat: Molly Moon’s

Nut-free ice cream in the Seattle area! We went to multiple locations & they were super consistent with allergies! Hazelnuts are a topping, but all ice cream flavors are nut-free.

They can have a busy rush in the afternoon and/or evening, so if you have other allergies than nuts that is something to note; however they were accommodating both times in regards to gluten! The ice cream is also delicious!

DAY 2

Brunch: Portage Bay Cafe

One of the top 10 restaurants I’ve ever been to! They have the most thorough allergy binder I’ve ever seen—it lists every ingredient, may contain warnings, and highlights which of the top 8 allergens the dish contains!

They’re a dedicated peanut-free restaurant (they don’t even let you bring outside food!) with a ton of gluten-free and nut-free options, and they clarify all your food allergies throughly before writing them down for the kitchen. They don’t use any nut milks, so I was safely able to have coffee, and their gluten-free bread is made from scratch! The gluten-free french toast and classic breakfast sandwich were both SO good! Also, they use allergy sticks on any dish you order!

Venue: The Space Needle

I didn’t eat at the restaurant here, but they have a high-end vending machine with cups of Molly Moon’s ice cream in the gift shop! They were so cute and it’s awesome to have something you know is nut-free!

robin.png

Treat: Hello Robin Cookies

Dedicated nut-free cookie shop in the Seattle area! They have two gluten-free & dairy-free cookies (oatmeal & flourless chocolate) and both were so good! They also sell Molly Moon’s ice cream and will make ice cream sandwiches with their cookies!

ghost.png

Dinner: Ghostfish Brewing Company

100% gluten-free brewery and restaurant in the Seattle industrial district! I went in not knowing anything about nuts, but was super happy to find out they only had one nut in the kitchen—cashew cream that goes on the vegan tacos and is completely separate in the kitchen!

I sampled some of their gluten-free beer and also split their fish & chips and bacon mac & cheese with my boyfriend! The fried fish is amazing here! They have a wide variety of lunch/dinner options including tacos, burgers, apps, fried food, and everything looked delicious! All their desserts are also nut-free! You have to try the gluten-free churros!

tmobile.png

Venue: T-Mobile Stadium

No peanut section, but had a great time here and no issues with an anaphylactic peanut allergy. We sat in the very top section, so there were few people and very few (if any) peanuts. This was one of the cleanest MLB stadiums I’ve been to! If you go to a night game, make sure to sit in sections 310-320ish because the view of Downtown Seattle is amazing!

There wasn’t a ton of great food here, but one find was the Salt & Straw cart on the main level that serves no flavors with nuts or gluten! They also put the ice cream in a cup first and then top with a cone, so there was also no gluten cross-contact!

DAY 3

Breakfast: Honest Biscuits

This is a breakfast sandwich spot on the lower level of Pike Place Market! The menu is super simple—they have a variety of eggs, cheeses and meats and you can build your own sandwich. They have a vegan and a gluten-free bun! There are no nuts in the kitchen, but they did clarify what nuts I was allergic to as both gluten-free and vegan biscuits contain coconut (which I was super impressed by!) He changed gloves for me and got one of the gluten-free biscuits from the back rather than the case. They also toast all the biscuits on tinfoil, so I felt safe! Seriously the best gluten-free breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had!

pike.png

Venue: Pike Place Market

Such a fun spot to explore in the morning in Seattle! I didn’t eat at any of the stands, but I did spot a lot of gluten-free options and not many nuts! Everything is pretty clean too! Definitely stop by Honest Biscuits on the lower level of Pike Place for gluten-free breakfast sandwiches made in a nut-free kitchen!

razzi.png

Lunch: Razzi’s Pizzeria

I heard great things about the Razzi’s Pizzeria on Greenwood (NW Seattle), so we visited this one for dinner with some family friends (who manage celiac disease!) They have a ton of gluten-free pasta and pizza options, but they do have peanuts and tree nuts in the kitchen. This location is much smaller than the original so I was a bit nervous about the small kitchen, but I safely had one of their gluten-free pizzas after alerting the staff of my allergies! Our celiac family friends ate safely too!

frankie.png

Treat: Frankie & Jo’s

Dedicated peanut-free, gluten-free, vegan, and soy-free ice cream shop! This was such a find! They have fresh made gluten-free waffle cones that smelled like heaven! Most of the ice cream is made with coconut milk, but they do have one or two flavors with cashew milk, and one with almonds and pecans. However, they were so accommodating of tree nut allergies. They have a separate nut-free scoop and washed hands and changed gloves and made sure I was safe! The seasonal flavor was cookies and cream, and it was amazing!

Drinks: Rabbit Hole

This is a nicer bar in Belltown with a pretty young crowd! They’re well known for their classic drinks, so I wasn’t too concerned about any specials with nuts. This was definitely the cleanest bar we went to in Seattle, and I safely had drinks here twice!

capitol.png

Dinner: Capitol Cider

Dedicated gluten-free and nut-free restaurant in Capitol Hill! The location is cute and it was such a great spot for dinner!

We got drinks here (which were really good!) and then split the mac & cheese and fried chicken and waffles! The menu is huge so it was so hard picking what to get, but both were amazing! We also split the salted caramel brownie and they had amazing other safe desserts! This is a must-stop if you’re visiting Seattle!

DAY 4

askatu.png

Breakfast: Askatu Bakery Cafe

Dedicated top 9 allergen free and corn-free bakery and cafe in Belltown! It’s a bit of a weird location, but it was a 2 minute walk from our hotel and everyone there was super nice! They had a bunch of unique desserts (cookie sandwiches, s’mores bars, tea cookies, frosted cookies), and it was awesome that everything was safe to eat! I think they also had savory lunch and cafe items too!

chihuly.png

Venue: Chihuly Glass Museum

This is a must stop if you’re visiting Seattle! I didn’t eat here, but they have two cafes—both serve pizza and salad, and I didn’t see anything with nuts on the menu! Unfortunately they don’t have gluten-free pizza crust, but everything was so clean, and they did have safe drinks!
