EAT

1. Caffè Trombetta
Location: Rome
“Grabbed coffee to go here one morning! They only had regular milk and pastries were kept pretty separate so no huge worries. Coffee was delicious and safe!”

2. Il Nuovo Faro
Location: Rome
“Our fav restaurant in Rome and on my favorite street in all of Rome! The owner is so nice—he speaks pretty good English and has family in NYC! We chatted with him for a while before sitting down and he told me we would be totally fine with nuts. There’s nothing with peanuts and they have an extensive 100% gluten-free menu with lots of pasta, pizza, and dessert options. Some tree nuts, but I’ve been fine at most restaurants sticking with pasta! They don’t have an allergy chart like most restaurants in Rome but the menu is in English, which was very helpful. I had the salmon fettuccine (they get their gluten-free pasta from a local vendor that makes it fresh) and it was delicious! One of my favorite meals in Rome for sure. My friends had steak that they also loved. Great wine and cocktails as well and free limoncello shots! Would definitely come back here!”

3. La Soffitta Renovatio
Location: Rome
“Our favorite pizza in Italy. This place is AIC certified so they have very clear safety guidelines for their gluten-free food. They have a separate kitchen for gluten-free food so everything on the menu can be made gluten-free. It’s located across from the Vatican, making it an easy choice after any number of Vatican City tours.”

4. Klass Restaurant
Location: Rome
“Came for my birthday dinner and had the prosciutto and burrata app (so good!), the seafood pasta (they did have gluten-free spaghetti) and the cherry ricotta dessert (they kept the almonds off to make it nut-free)! Staff were very knowledgable about food allergies and one got the manager who confirmed everything and even explained she would write a special note down for the kitchen (which I’ve found is rare in most places!) We came for happy hour since they are one of the only places that do not serve peanuts! They have some tree nuts and I didn’t see any peanuts on the dinner menu. You can request an allergy menu to see the allergens present in each dish. It didn’t seem like they had gluten-free pizza crust or pasta; however, they did have a bunch of entrees (chicken, seafood, etc.) and a couple fabulous looking risottos that were gluten-free.”

6. Oppio Caffè
Location: Rome
“This is right by the Colosseum. They use sunflower oil. And they have an allergen menu but they said they could not guarantee cross-contamination because no dedicated area. Friendly waitstaff.”

7. Pandalì
Location: Rome
“Very small 100% gluten-free eatery with a limited menu. I ordered a prosciutto sandwich on focaccia bread that was delicious and they have a few other items available. The menu seems to change daily. A good spot for an easy lunch if you aren’t too picky.”

8. Pantha Rei
Location: Rome
“The entire menu can be made gluten-free and even lactose-free. Another great spot certified by the AIC so you know it’s safe. They even put bottles on the table to signify that it’s a gluten-free table. The regular pizzas are probably a frozen crust, based on the look and texture, but the pastas are fresh and delicious and the fried pizza appetizer was fun and delicious. Extremely safe place to eat in a very convenient location.”

9. Pizza in Trevi
Location: Rome
“Nothing like a restaurant with a separate gluten-free kitchen. They give gluten-free customers special place mats and dishware to notify other employees of your allergy. Almost half the restaurant was full of other gluten-free eaters! All the pizzas are available gluten-free. Downside or upside is its location near the Trevi fountain. It gets busy!”

10. Ramè Sushi Naturale Italiano
Location: Rome
“This place is 100% gluten-free and amazing. Absolutely our favorite restaurant in all of Italy. The service was impeccable. Our server curated the whole menu for us (menu is in Italian) and every dish he selected was better than the next. We had rolls with ricotta, beet chips, plantains, and more. Sushi that could feed a family of 4 (we eat a lot), gluten-free beer, and dessert for all under 100 Euros. Fish is incredible quality and so fresh. It’s a 25 minute walk from city center or 10 minute taxi but the highlight of our trip!”

11. Risotteria Melotti Roma
Location: Rome
“It was incredible to be able to eat everything on the menu at this 100% gluten-free restaurant in Rome! We ended up coming here twice and sharing everything between 4 of us. Every single dish was outrageously delicious!”

12. Santa Maria Osteria – Ristorante Pizzeria
Location: Rome
“The menu is totally labeled for the top 14 allergens, which was extremely helpful. They have only one dish with peanuts, fried anchovy, and there were a few pine nuts, some other tree nuts on salads and in desserts. They have gluten-free pizza crust and gluten-free pasta. Gluten-wise: I felt extremely comfortable and they totally got the gluten-free thing. Nut allergy-wise: I attempted several times to explain to the waiter about the severity of my allergy and cross-contamination but he, according to my best friends, was “not getting it.” But, we did flag down another waiter who said I would 100% be fine with the pizza. I was not confident but did end up getting a gluten-free pizza (margarita) and drinks from the bar (mojitos). Had no allergy issues with nuts or gluten and the pizza was delicious! The first waiter also brought over a bunch of free desserts including a mini gluten-free tiramisu all on the house which was so sweet! I did not eat because of potential cross contact with nuts but my friends LOVED the dessert.”

13. Voglia di Pizza – Gluten free
Location: Rome
“Wonderful place to get a quick gluten-free pizza between shopping. It’s located on a street with a lot of fashionable stores. They were able to make all the pizzas gluten-free and I felt very confident in their knowledge of celiac disease. All the gluten-free pizzas are cooked in a dedicated area and are tagged with little gluten-free pizza tags.”

TREAT

1. Celiachiamo Lab
Location: Rome
“100% gluten-free bakery and grocery store. This place is full of breads, packaged foods, frozen foods, and a bakery/eatery. We grabbed delicious baked sweets and pizza to take away, as well as a few breakfast items to keep at our Airbnb.”

2. La Pasticciera
Location: Rome
“Adorable dedicated 100% gluten-free bakery located near the train station in a basement shop below street level. This place has a wide selection of treats. We had the cannolis, which they fill freshly when you order them, and bag of other treats to bring back to our Airbnb. The cannolis were delicious! Definitely a good place to visit at the start of your Rome trip.”

3. New Food Gluten Free – Ponte Sisto
Location: Rome
“100% gluten-free bakery and fast casual eatery with multiple locations. They have various baked goods, breakfast items, and lunch items available. This was the smallest bakery/eatery we visited but we enjoyed the items we bought. Good to stock up on gluten-free breakfast items for the mornings because breakfasts are hard to come by in Italy for celiacs.”

4. Fatamorgana Monti
Location: Rome
“Dedicated 100% gluten-free gelato shop. It’s a chain but it’s still safe and delicious. I love all their cone and flavor choices. Always a good stop at the end of your night for a ‘nightcap’ scoop.”

5. Fiocco di neve
Location: Rome
“This gelato shop is 100% gluten-free and in a very good location near the Pantheon and other Ancient Rome sites. They had our favorite gelato shop and they had flavors including an Oreo flavor that was to die for. They also had signs that said they accommodated other allergies. Highly recommend this place.”

6. Frigidarium
Location: Rome
“Went because of previous Spokin reviews and had a great experience! Staff speak good English and are knowledgeable about nut allergies. They also had gluten-free cones! There are a few flavors with tree nuts but they are kept on one side of the display case. I stuck with the fruit flavors (on the opposite side) and got strawberry and lemon. Each flavor has a dedicated scoop so I felt comfortable. The staff did say that they occasionally have seasonal flavors with peanuts and other tree nuts but they always clean the machine before starting the day and make nut flavors last. There were only 2 out of over 20 flavors that day with nuts so I felt pretty safe and had gelato with no allergy issues!”

STAY

1. Hotel Archimede
Location: Rome
“Stayed here our first few days in Rome! It’s right behind the train station (less than a 5 minute walk) Staff were very friendly and spoke great English and it worked great for our group of 3 in terms of location and affordability. We heard from a few people that this is not the nicest area and not the most safe but we had no issues. There are a bunch of cute restaurants nearby and we did find safe options at a few, but not our fav restaurants of the trip (much better selection and allergy awareness in Rome city center) Would recommend though if you need a convenient and affordable place to stay!”

2. Hotel Ponte Sisto
Location: Rome
“Rome vacation with the family. Hotel includes free breakfast buffet. Decent selection of Schar gluten-free items on the breakfast buffet which was a huge surprise. Great central but quiet location. Never stayed in this part of Rome before but it’s easy to get to most things. I should add that the breakfast buffet is open until 11 AM if you’re traveling with teenagers!”
