Dairy, Egg, Tree Nut, Sesame, Kiwi Fruit, and Shellfish-Free Portugal Top Picks

Hi! I’m Grace, I manage allergies to dairy, eggs, tree nuts, sesame, kiwi fruit and some seafood. I went to the Algarve in Portugal for a holiday with my family! A highlight of my trip was seeing the stunning beaches at Albuferia! My favorite restaurant was Kamiza Sushi Bar where I ate lots of sushi! Humberto Delgado Airport

“Didn’t eat any food here but was able to bring my own food and ice packs on board. I found when I took the ice packs out of my bag and on the tray for the carry on baggage scanner I wasn’t stopped and didn’t have issues. Otherwise, after showing my letter from my doctor explaining it is a medical requirement for my to bring my own food and ice packs I was able to bring it all on board!”

Restaurante Louisiana

“We saw this stunning restaurant/cafe just off the beach in Albuferia and couldn’t help but notice the smoothies they had on their menu. These ‘Just Smoothies’ were labeled as are gluten-free and also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Usually smoothies are based with milk, so I was very intrigued when I saw it was dairy free! They had some delicious sounding smoothie options on the menu which looked to be free of the rest of my allergens as well. To double check I gave the staff my Portuguese translated Equal Eats card and explained my allergies to make sure it was suitable for me. They explained instead of using milk in their smoothies, they use apple juice to blend in with fresh fruit and vegetables. They also use a sanitized clean blender each time to avoid cross-contamination. They confirmed that the smoothies were also suitable to the rest of my allergies! I decided to try the Tropical Breeze which consisted of melon, mango, strawberry and apple juice. Let me tell you it did not disappoint! These smoothies was so delicious and also so cool and refreshing after spending the day on the beach. Smoothies is a menu item I often avoid, particularly due to my dairy allergy. So being able to have some safely whilst out at a cafe right on the beach in Portugal was so exciting! Something I have noticed whilst in Portugal, is that they often have very clear labelling for their vegan and gluten-free products. This is super helpful as often I would read smoothies on a menu and instantly avoid it. It was only because I could see their clear dairy free labelling I looked into it!”

Kamiza Sushi

“We happened to walk past Kamiza Sushi Bar one night after dinner, it was quite late so it wasn’t too busy inside so we decided to have a look at their menu. Since my brother and I have multiple food allergies, we always opt for simple plain sushi options. We saw they had some edamame, nigiri and basic sushi rolls on their menu which is what we typically order. We showed the staff our Portuguese-translated Equal Eats cards and explained our allergies. They assured us that they definitely could make up some simple sushi dishes that catered to our allergies. Some of the sushi dishes did contain allergens such as sesame but these were ingredients that they added at the end so they could easily not add it! We came back the next day for lunch since we had already eaten dinner that night. We spoke to a different staff member but they also checked our Equal Eats cards and assured us they could cater. We safely ordered, edamame beans, salmon hosomaki, salmon nigiri, baby salmon rolls, baby cucumber rolls and uramaki (avocado and salmon as well as avocado, cucumber and mango). They also made us a dish of cucumber with salt, oil and vinegar – usually they put sesame but they ensured to leave it out for us! It was all so delicious and most importantly allergy friendly! All of their sushi is made to order so this made it possible for them to adapt to us! All look at their amazing display”

Amorino Gelato

“I have also safely eaten the chocolate sorbets here! It is a bit further down the Marinina from the other Amorino. I also gave the staff my Portuguese translated Equal Eats card here to double check and explain my allergies. My allergens are in the ice cream shop, however they also carried out the same allergy procedures using their allergy kit. They used a clean scoop to scoop off the top layer of ice cream in case there was any cross-contamination and then got a new clean spoon to scoop my sorbet.”
