Celiac-Safe Maine + New Hampshire Travel Itinerary

Hi! My name is Christina, and I manage celiac disease. I went with my boyfriend Michal on a spontaneous trip to Southern Maine and New Hampshire for a fun getaway weekend. The highlight of our weekend was our day trip in Portland. A great gluten-free food scene! Follow me on the Spokin app @gflivingbk and on Instagram @glutenfreelivingbk.

DAY 1

Stay: Goosepoint Getaway AirBnB

“We stayed at a cozy Airbnb called Goosepoint Getaway. They had a lovely backyard fire pit making for a cozy night away from the city.”

Dinner: River House

Location: Portsmouth, New Hampshire

“If you ever visit Portsmouth, New Hampshire I highly recommend River House. Their menu is not 100% gluten-free, but most items are gluten-free anyway. All of their fried foods are made with gluten-free chickpea flour, so the fryer is safe. The staff was knowledgeable of celiac.”

Snack: Lovebird Donuts

Location: Kittery, Maine

“Lovebird Donuts is not 100% gluten-free but the donuts are prepared in a dedicated area and kept away from the regular donuts. The staff also changes gloves when picking up the gluten free ones.”

Sightseeing: Exploring Portsmouth, NH.

“Lots of cute boutiques to explore. Also found a cute cheese shop. Picked up some cheese to enjoy with wine at our Airbnb.”

DAY 2

Breakfast: Roots Cafe

Location: Westbrook, Maine

“Roots Cafe is 100% gluten free. I went here for a late breakfast and it was delicious. They have breakfast items and also sandwich lunches. I noticed they used Canyon Bakehouse products for their sandwiches. They also have a huge selection of baked goods like cupcakes, donuts, cookies, and more!”

Lunch: Bite Into Maine

Location: Portland, Maine

“They are known for their lobster rolls. Bite Into Mine offers gluten free options. The gluten free rolls are prepared in a dedicated area and the staff changes gloves. The staff was knowledgeable of celiac and were very kind and reassuring. This was my favorite meal in Portland, so delicious. Right next-door to this location is Orange Bike Brewing. This spot is 100% gluten free and they recommended bringing our gluten free lobster rolls over to enjoy with our beer.”

Drinks: Orange Bike Brewing

Location: Portland, Maine

“Orange Bike Brewing is a 100% gluten-free brewery in Portland, ME. The spot is super chill with a cute inside and a relaxing outdoor area with a fire pit. They offer a few gluten-free snacks like chips, etc., but they also allow you to bring over gluten-free lobster rolls from their neighbors, Bite into Maine. I had the chance to meet the owners as well, they were so nice. Highly recommend this spot!”

Drinks: Lucky Pigeon Brewery

Location: Biddeford, Maine

“Lucky Pigeon Brewery is Maine‘s first 100% gluten-free brewery. The owners were super friendly and I enjoyed the beer. They also do gluten-free food pop-ups with local gluten-free vendors.”

Sightseeing: Exploring Portland, ME

“We strolled around Portland for the day. Lots of cute shops and boutiques. We then took a walk along the water/old railroad line.”

Sightseeing: Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse

“Finally ended up exploring Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse. Nice area to walk around with nice views of water and lighthouse. In the Summer Bite Into Maine has a food truck located here!”

DAY 3

Breakfast: Kane’s Donuts

Location: Saugus, Massachusetts

“Finally tried Kane’s Donuts! This shop is not 100% gluten-free but they prepare the donuts in a dedicated area. The staff also changed gloves when picking up my gluten-free donuts.”
