Cape Cod Milk and Nut Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

CapeCodCatherine2

Hi! I’m Catherine and I’m 18 years old. I’m from Ohio and I spend every summer in Chatham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. I have severe food allergies to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, latex, and quinoa. I am a rising freshman in college and will be attending Tufts University! Food allergies have inspired my love for cooking, and I even wrote my own allergy cookbook: Cook It Up. One of my favorite restaurants is Bluefins Sushi and Sake Bar in Chatham! I love visiting all of the gorgeous beaches on the Cape and shopping in the quaint towns. I’ve reviewed all of my favorite places on Cape Cod on the Spokin app, so make sure to follow me @catherinewalker. Also check out my Instagram @cook_it_up_catherine and food allergy blog!

DAY 1

Dinner: Bluefins Sushi & Sake Bar

This is one of my favorite restaurants because of the attention to detail with making sure everything is allergy-safe. I love ordering the veggie sushi rolls, as well as hot food like fresh teriyaki fish with veggies and rice. All of the food is incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. The items on the menu can be accommodated based on allergies and the chefs are always very careful when prepping the food.

Treat: Chatham Cookware

This is a great place to pick up a quick snack, drink, or meal! They serve a variety of prepared foods as well as packaged chips and drink options. I personally haven’t tried the house made food, however I love stopping in here and finding safe snack options!

Shopping: Chatham Village Market

We ordered fresh fish from here multiple times this week and the staff was very educated and understanding about our food allergies. He kept all of our food in a separate area and made sure to switch his gloves before packaging everything. I have a latex allergy, so I always ask about the gloves that are used with food preparation and again, the staff was extremely understanding and made sure to show us the glove box for extra reassurance. On a separate note, this is a great grocery store and they have a number of allergy-friendly products including MadeGood and some dairy alternatives.

Sightseeing: Chatham Lighthouse Beach

Chatham Lighthouse Beach has been my favorite beach on the Cape for years! You can visit and climb the iconic Chatham Lighthouse or walk for miles along the shoreline. They have beach yoga here in the morning and it is only a 10-minute walk from downtown. This is a must-see spot on the Cape!

DAY 2

Dinner: twenty-eight Atlantic

This was such a special night! One of the first times I have EVER felt completely comfortable eating out without question! We talked to the chef weeks beforehand to plan out our dinner to make sure it was safe for our allergens. Both my mom and brother have allergies, so we were all prepared similar meals. The restaurant’s menu is, in general, tailored to be super flexible and accommodating to anyone with food allergies. Our server was so wonderful and understanding and made us all feel very comfortable. They even went above and beyond to print out special personalized menus for us with the planned out safe food and our names specially labeled. We talked to the chef when the food came out and spoke with the bakery chef who explained the bread ingredients to us. I ordered a pan seared salmon with potatoes, green beans, and lump crab. I also ordered a citrus mocktail, which was super fun and tasty! Everything was cooked very well and delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant and the hotel which it is a part of because of the attention to detail and understanding everywhere.

Shopping: Chatham Bars Inn Farm

The most amazing fresh produce farm stand on Cape Cod! This market has a great selection of produce that is grown on property. I’ve never seen produce as fresh as what they sell here! The selection varies a bit depending on what’s in season. One of my favorite spots to buy ingredients for recipes. The garden/farm is also absolutely gorgeous, so walking around the property is a must!

Sightseeing: Sunset at Plesant Bay

Plesant Bay is the ideal place to sail or spend time at Jackknife Beach. My family and I come here every year to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. It is right down the street from where we had dinner at Twenty-Eight Atlantic, and it is also a great spot for watching the sunset!

DAY 3

Dinner: Bluefins Sushi & Sake Bar

Everything can be made in a dedicated prep area to avoid cross-contamination too. I’ve even ordered takeout from here and the allergens were all marked on my order to keep my food safe and separate. They have a second location on the Cape in Falmouth as well!

Shopping: Mac’s Chatham Fish & Lobster

LOVE buying fresh fish from the fish market here! They have the best selection and are always careful with allergies by changing gloves and packaging seafood in a separate area.

Shopping: Orleans Whole Food Store

I was so happy to find that this location has many allergy-friendly brands which I use very regularly. They have a great selection of produce as well!

Sightseeing: Nauset Lighthouse

Fun fact, this is the iconic lighthouse featured on the Cape Cod chip bag! I love visiting this historic lighthouse. The drive up to see it is along the water and it’s one of the Cape’s most well-known locations.
