Big Blue Bagel & Deli

Location: Auburn, Alabama

“Big Blue Bagel is a staple for breakfast around Auburn! You will find there is usually line of people on the weekends waiting to satisfy their bagel craving. There are a variety of bagels and cream cheeses to choose from. They also do omelets if that’s more your style. My order is either a sausage, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel or the War Eagle omelet with a side of fruit!”

Boil & Bake

Location: Costa Mesa, California

“PEANUT-FREE BAGEL SHOP! Not only are their bagels insanely delicious, but they don’t have any peanuts on the menu! When I reached out to them on Instagram thanking them for not having peanuts on the menu, they let me know they won’t ever have peanuts on the menu because of those with allergies! Absolutely would recommend. Heads up that the vegan spread does have almonds if you have a severe tree nut allergy.”

Caffe Capriccio

“Lots of things on the menu have pesto, so I played it safe with their “tomato bagel” (bagel with cream cheese, tomato, capers, and onion). Good, cute spot that isn’t too pricey!”

East Coast Bagel

Location: Long Beach, California

“Need to preface this with the fact that I have not physically been into this location—so I cannot speak to what their bagel case looks like or their in-real-life experience. However, I called and spoke with their employees before ordering for the first time, and they reassured me that if I add a note to avoid cross-contamination on my online order and that I have an allergy, they will use a separate knife and prepare it in a separate space. I order from them all the time and have never had an issue!”

Their bins do have sesame on the everything bagel, but I am not worried about cross-contamination when it comes to sesame, so I feel safe eating here. Peanut butter is stored in a completely separate prep area, so I am always safe!”

They’re super accommodating of nut allergies and toast the gluten-free bagels separately to avoid cross-contamination. I got the Popeye breakfast sandwich (eggs, spinach, mushrooms, and lots of melted cheese), but you can customize any of the sandwiches to your liking! They have locations throughout the Bay Area, so definitely recommend checking them out!”

“I have boxes of bakery items sent to me year round. Clear labeling, good packaging, and so delicious. Nut-free facility, organic, vegan and parve. Actually free of 7 of Top 8 (wheat being the one they use). They also don’t use any yucky filters like mold inhibitors. My favorite is the sugar-free, yeast-free rustic sourdough! IOWA

5 Borough Bagels

Location: Clive, Iowa

“They have gluten-free and vegan options here! I called first to see if we could eat safely, and they said they they have limited nuts on the menu but would prepare her bagel in the back with clean utensils. On top of that, they have great Covid protocols with all their staff gloved and masked up. There’s an easy-to-order online system. The bagels were amazing and have that great chew you’d get from a New York bagel. Only thing I wish they had was more information online, versus having to call in about it. Will definitely eat there again!”

MARYLAND

Bethesda Bagels

Location: Bethesda, Maryland

“Well, smear my bagel, baby!! I LOVE Bethesda Bagels. Excellently made bagels, gorgeous bakery items like rugelach, black and white cookies, and coffee cake on occasion. The bagel deli not only excels at having an expansive menu, but also by having such fabulous items across the board. I’ve had an egg bagel with nova, cream cheese, tomato, and onion on multiple occasions, but I’ve also tested the pumpernickel bagel (DELICIOUS), and some of their creative and fun cream cheese flavors, such as cartelized onion and sun-dried tomato! My friends and I go practically every weekend, this place is so good. Would highly, highly recommend. I also asked about nuts for the black and white cookies, and the man at the register was helpful and knew what ingredients were in the cookies.”

Georgetown Bagelry

“Although they do offer peanut butter as a bagel topping, this shop does not use any peanut butter on the line. Instead, they provide the customer a small side of peanut butter, and the customer must apply it themselves. This keeps the line clean from cross-contamination. They don’t have any bagel flavors with nuts, and I’ve been eating here for years.”

“Was told they do not make egg bagels, so no cross-contamination when they are boiled/baked! I do not get them sliced or cut in case of cross-contamination when they are making egg sandwiches. Bagels are great, loved their seasonal cream cheese choices. I think I saw a cream cheese that had walnuts in it. Be sure to double check everything with staff. I have a friend that works there and checked everything out for me!”

@foodallergygrl, who manages tree nut and egg allergies

Pavement Coffee

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

“On their online ordering they have a button that says ‘egg allergy no cross contamination’ and ‘dairy allergy no cross contamination’ that you can check off before building your bagel. I ordered in person and the guy at the front told me that they do their best to avoid cross-contamination whenever possible. They do have sesame so they said sometimes it’s harder to avoid sesame seeds that might be around but that they would use a clean surface, clean utensils, etc. and I did not see a stray sesame seed! They actually didn’t slice my bagel for me to avoid the cross contamination from cutting other bagels. I got a BLT with egg on a plain bagel. So so so delish. Highly recommend!! They have tons of locations all over the city.”

MICHIGAN

Zingerman’s Delicatessen

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan

“Zingerman’s did a fantastic job of accommodating my allergies and making me feel safe. They have a great allergy statement on their website, and the manager came out while I was ordering (regular protocol for all allergy orders!) and ensured my food would be prepared in a sanitized prep area with fresh gloves and served in an red allergy indicator basket. They have everything—from sandwiches, salads, and soups, to pastries, baguettes, and bagels! I safely enjoyed a grilled chicken sandwich and chips for dinner and came back for a egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a sesame seed bagel the next week! However, they do caution that their bread is ‘shipped to the facility with other breads that contain tree nuts’.”

The owner will give you tips on reheating, as they freeze right after baking to preserve freshness. The texture is so good. Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys

Location: New York, New York

“Calling all my sesame allergy peeps!! Kossar’s Bagel & Bialys downtown in the Lower East Side always takes care of me. Living in New York City, a classic bacon, egg, and cheese is a must on a slow Saturday morning. With a sesame allergy, any bagel can be extremely risky due to the high level of cross-contamination. When I first stepped foot in the small authentic shop, it was daunting because the entire counter was covered in sesame seeds. The staff has assured me multiple times that they will keep me safe—cleaning off the counter, making my bagel on a separate counter atop a sheet of aluminum, and changing their gloves. I can also never get my bagel toasted. I’ve eaten at Kossar’s upwards of 25 times now and have never ever had an issue!”

“They clearly labeled my order with a nut and dairy allergy and were careful to avoid cross-contamination from utensils. While the bagels were definitely not up to par with NY bagels, they were safe and one of the better bagels in Austin.”

VERMONT

Myer’s Bagel Bakery

Location: Burlington, Vermont

“This bagel shop has peanut butter as a bagel topping. We were getting sandwiches and alerted the staff. She said no one had ordered peanut butter yet that day but got a fresh knife and cutting board anyways to prepare my daughter’s sandwich. The same woman took the order, made the sandwich, brought it to us, and knew us on sight, even though several people were waiting. Definitely a cross-contamination risk overall, but I was impressed with the staff and we felt comfortable. FYI they do carry sesame bagels here.”

Willow’s Bagels

“Willow’s makes delicious boiled and baked gluten-free bagels, in addition to their wheat bagels. You can also buy bulk frozen bagels to-go! Staff is very happy to answer questions about their procedures, and their online ordering system allows you to add any allergy comments onto your order! They DO use nut spreads in their shop but use on separate cutting boards that go straight into the wash.”
