Peanut, Tree nut, and Pea-Free Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay Travel Itinerary

Hey there! I’m Hannah Smelcer, a college student who studied abroad in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay! I manage an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts, pea protein, watermelon, and cantaloupe as well as oral allergy syndrome to bananas and avocado. My favorite restaurant was La Panera Rosa Centro in Buenos Aires where I had the waffle con dulce de leche without walnuts! DAY 1

Airline: American Airlines & Aerolineas Argentinas

“American for domestic flights is great. However, when I was taking my international flight out of Miami, I called ahead about the meals on the flight, and the lady was not kind at all. They have no way to accommodate food allergies, just diets. I was served multiple allergens on my flight.”

Lunch: Noblot’s Pollos Asados

“Staff was great about making sure my meal was safe and modifying things for me!”

Sightseeing: Walked around town and looked at a market set up in the Santa Lucía area

Sightseeing: Skatepark Parque Bustamante

DAY 2

Restaurant: Pavo Real

“This was definitely a bit on the riskier side to eat at with food allergies, the staff did a wonderful job understanding and helping me get safe food! While I wouldn’t have chosen to eat here if I was not traveling in a group, I still ate safely!”

Coffee Shop: Wonderland Café

“This was by far the cutest coffee shop I have ever been in. It was Alice in Wonderland themed and the place did not disappoint! The staff were well educated on allergies, and the menu was online, so I was able to check everything out myself before asking. My friends and I had a table that was hidden behind a mirror! How cool!”

Sightseeing: Plaza de Armas

Sightseeing: Santa Lucía Hill

ARGENTINA

DAY 3

Hostel: Faz Hostel

“I cannot recommend this hostel enough!! They cook meals for you at the hostel. While feeding many, they were so kind to be very careful about making sure my food was safe! The kitchen in the house is also available for use whenever you want and the fridge is available for you to store your food! One traditional meal is asado where is multiple courses of different meats and fantastic sides. It was so good. The staff were so beyond wonderful. They truly became family while we were there.”

Sightseeing: Flew over the Andes Mountains

DAY 4

Dinner: Capitán

“This is a bar and restaurant. Although the menu was limited for my allergens, the staff went above and beyond to let me modify meals and made sure I was safe and taken care of! I had sanguche de pollo…minus the bread!”

Sightseeing: Cabildo

Sightseeing: Iglesia Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

Sightseeing: Iglesia de los Capuchinos

DAY 5

Lunch: Rappi

“The hostel we were staying at ordered our lunches to take with us on a hike from Rappi. Safely enjoyed a veggie sandwich and apple from there!”

Dessert: Heladería Wöllen Centro

“Not only did I have great dairy-free ice cream, but I also made NEW FRIENDS! The staff were so so kind and understanding. New scoop, new container, they did it all!”

Sightseeing: La Cumbrecita

DAY 6

Lunch: Escaleno Resto Bar

“I had Pastel de Papas in a prepackaged container that was part of Argentina’s ‘sin T.A.C.C.’ labeling. All of the ingredients contained in the meal were labeled on the front (in Spanish) and even had eggs (huevos) labeled in bold! Since it was already pre-packaged, the meal was heated up in its container and served to me in it as well. There was a very low risk of any cross-contact! I first learned about Argentina’s sin T.A.C.C. at this restaurant and started to notice different packaged items with this labeling around after!”

Dinner: POSTA!

“Safely ate pizza and pasta from this restaurant! The waitstaff was great about helping me pick safe food. Pizza and pasta have been a safe meal for me consistently so it was nice to enjoy it in Cordoba!”

Dessert: Tasty Cream

“Dairy-free ice cream! Helado! The staff was very understanding about the scoop not being reused and opened a new container for me so there was no previous cross-contact.”

Sightseeing: Parque Sarmiento

Sightseeing: Museo Superior de Bellas Artes Evita

Sightseeing: Paseo de las Artes

DAY 7

Dessert: Rapanui

“Had a great experience at this ice cream shop! The staff used a clean scoop and offered dairy-free options! It was DELICIOUS! They also have long hours, which make for a great late night treat!”

Sightseeing: Capitalinas on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta
