Bar El Lechuguita
Location: Ronda, Spain
“I ate at Lechuguita with a friend on a Friday night. They have outdoor and indoor seating. They open at 8 but be sure to get there at 8 because a line forms quickly. I have been wanting to try this place for a while. My home-stay family lives on the same street as this bar and it gets amazing reviews. In addition, the tapas are extremely affordable. I payed €3.60 in total for 3 tapas. I safely ordered the chickpeas and chorizo, the ‘lechuguita’, and the Salmorejo! The staff assured me that these dishes did not contain nuts. I also did not see any nuts on the menu! There are English translations for all the dishes. Wonderful and delicious!”
Churrería Alba
Location: Ronda, Spain
“Nut-free breakfast spot! This café is located on Carrera Espinel, also known as Calle La Bola. It is super fast-paced and busy, but their menu is super simple and clear! I safely ate the bread with jam and tried the churro that my host sister ordered. The dip they have for the churro is chocolate sauce. Very delicious! PS. Get the fresh-squeezed orange juice.”
Mesón Riofrío
Location: Riofrío, Spain
“My group stopped here for a lunch after touring the ‘Alhambra’ in Granada. I did not know where we were eating beforehand, and thus was not able to research beforehand. The menu is in Spanish and very large. The waiter confirmed that there was no nuts in the Trucha dishes (trout). I didn’t see any other nuts of the menu, yet there very well may be. The waiters speak Spanish. I was able to safety eat the ‘Trucha con una salsa de champiñones y gambas’ (trout with a mushroom and shrimp sauce). The meal came with a side of fries. The meal was delicious.”
Restaurante Los Cazadores Pescados Y Mariscos
Location: Ronda, Spain
“I went to Cazadores for a dinner with my host family. It is a classic establishment that serves mostly seafood. Everyone speaks Spanish. My host parents knew the owner and thus we were not given a menu, only suggestions my the owner. I communicated my nut allergy in Spanish and he said the only thing with nuts was the gelato. All the seafood was prepared fresh and the ingredients are all quite simple. Delicious food! If you go here, a reservation is necessary. I safely ate mussels, oysters, fried eggplant, and fried sardines.”
Sala Caireles
Location: Arriate, Spain
“I ate here for a group dinner in my study abroad program. While we ate, flamenco dancers performed! Wonderful experience. As for the food, I felt very safe eating here. My program director called a few days ahead and made sure all the food my group would be served did not contain nuts. The meal was served tapa style and I ate about 6 or 7 different plates. The only thing I could not eat was fried fish because the breading had a ‘may contain’ label. Instead, the chefs made me my own main tapa dish (shrimp in melted mozzarella with peppers). In addition, the chef personally delivered the meal and was very happy to accommodate. The place was spotless and very well-run. Would go back if I had the chance!”
Patanchón Bar de Tapas
Location: Sevilla, Spain
“I ate at Patachon Bar on a lively Sunday night after a day of touring Sevilla. I was not able to research the restaurant before hand and my phone was dead. The menu was all in Spanish. Since I’m studying Spanish, the group I’m with only permits Spanish. The waiters were straight-forward and I used my background in Spanish to pick something simple. When it came time to order, we ordered in Spanish. However, our waiter did offer to speak English. I communicated my allergy in Spanish and asked him to inform the kitchen. He agreed. The food for the rest of my party came about twenty minutes before mine. While waiting, the waiter mentioned several times to his coworkers that I had an allergy to ‘frutos secos.’ This made me trust the communication. I successfully ate grilled garlic chicken and french fries. Highly recommend!”
Carrefour Express
Location: Ronda, Spain
“I love Carrefour! This express supermarket was right in the heart of Ronda and one street over from my host family. They have many nut-free options and microwaveable meals. In addition, there is nut-free bread. I always got the ‘pea and ham’ meal, as well as cheap packs of turkey and cheese. The prices are amazing for fruit as well!”
