Kauai Gluten-Free Travel Itinerary

KauaiTWOEmmaHeroPicture

Hi friends! I’m Katelyn, a 27 year old from Arizona with celiac disease. I recently spent 30 hours in Kauai, Hawaii with my dad and, while the trip was short, we managed to fit in lots of sightseeing and gluten-free restaurants! Kauai is the perfect island to visit if you love doing things outdoors and hiking the Waimea Canyon is a must. I reviewed all my recommendations on the Spokin app @eatglutenfreeaz and you can also follow along with my gluten-free adventures on Instagram @eatglutenfreeaz.

DAY 1

Dinner: Tiki Tacos

100% dedicated gluten-free taco shop. They make their own corn tortillas and the most popular tacos are the fish tacos. They also have quesadillas! Not my favorite restaurant to eat at because the Mexican food in AZ is amazing but a great option when in Kauai.

Cocktails: Nani Moon Meadery

A small local place where you can go a do a mead tasting. Mead is a honey-based wine with a higher ABV than regular wine. Not 100% gluten-free because they have snack options that contain gluten, but the meads are all gluten-free. Make sure you make a reservation!

Treat: JoJo’s Shave Ice

All flavors are made in house with pure cane sugar. I ordered the Rainbow Shave Ice with strawberry, banana, vanilla, a-d macadamia nut ice cream. Most shave ice combos and milkshakes are gluten free.

Sightseeing:

Watch the sunset at Hanalei Pier

DAY 2

Breakfast: Kalaheo Cafe & Coffee Company

I ended up ordering an açaí fresh fruit smoothie and a side of ham. After speaking with another staff member, they informed me they had “the best” gluten-free bread and really good carrot cake. The kitchen is not dedicated but she said they are cooked separately. I took a risk and ordered a slice of gluten-free bread (not toasted as the toaster ovens are not dedicated) and a slice of gluten-free carrot cake. I didn’t get sick from anything I tried, but definitely not the most allergen-friendly place to eat.

Lunch: Sushi Girl Kauai

100% dedicated gluten-free sushi shack. Amazing sushi rolls and even better poke bowls. The yum yum sauce is sooo good!

Treat: Wailua Shave Ice

The best shave ice I had during the trip! They use real juice and coconut milk instead of artificial flavoring. I ordered the Lava Flow. They also have açaí bowls, but had no idea if the granola is gluten-free so I would avoid the granola to be safe.

Dinner: Holoholo Grill

Located inside the Koloa Landing Resort in Poipu. The menu was clearly labeled and the staff was incredibly helpful. I ordered the poke bowl and it was delicious.

Sightseeing:

Hike Waimea Canyon and Hike Queen’s Bath
