Jenna’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks

Hi! I’m Jenna and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where I safely ate with a dairy allergy. My finds feature places located in my home state of California as well as finds from a trip to Chicago. One of my favorites was Mamahuhu, a Chinese chain in SF where I had Kung Pao chicken with crunchy cucumbers and rice (hint: they have an allergen menu and excellent allergy protocols). Lunar New Year for me is about spending time with loved ones, honoring ancestors, and ushering in a new year of good luck. I was born in the year of the tiger and am excited for the year of the horse! I am a therapist in California and specialize in working with teens/adults navigating food allergies and anxiety. A myth that I would like to dispel is the idea that Asian food is not safe for people with food allergies. Asian cuisines are so varied and diverse, with many of them not using nuts or dairy in their main dishes, that it is unfair to characterize them as a monolith or assume restaurants are unable to accommodate allergies! Additionally, as someone with a milk allergy (and formerly allergic to eggs, beef, and pork as well), Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Korean restaurants have been lifelines for me growing up, often being the only places with safe options for me. The Brothers Sushi Culver City

Location: Culver City, California

“I absolutely adore this sushi restaurant! The fish is such high quality, and they don’t use dairy or eggs on most items on the menu. Staff assured me that clean prep area would be used for my food and I had no issues. I had several types of nigiri including the tuna sampler (so good), edamame, salmon yellowtail tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, and even the grilled octopus! 10/10”

Gokoku Vegan Vegetarian Ramen Shop

Location: Los Angeles, California

“Wow, finally got to try this place after many years of living in LA and I was not disappointed! It is small inside, but the food is delicious and the staff is very kind. The person next to me had a long list of food allergies (including soy and pumpkin), and I overheard the owner spending a lot of time speaking with him to ensure that the meal that he ate was cooked safely, free of his allergens. I ordered the volcano roll, which was delicious and I also got the curry Ramen, which was so comforting! I would definitely come back. Highly recommend for vegan Ramen and sushi!”

Woon

Location: Los Angeles, California

“I enjoyed a lovely and safe Chinese dinner here yesterday. I ordered the cucumber salad, scallion, pancake, veggie noodles, and tofu Bao. I confirmed with the staff that everything was dairy-free and was reassured when I saw that they had an allergen menu that they were checking each dish with. On their menu, they also clearly indicate which items have nuts in it, which is not an issue for me, but just highlights how allergy aware they are. I highly recommend this spot—plus, it was extremely delicious and affordable!”

Night + Market Sahm

Location: Los Angeles, California

“I had my birthday dinner here two years ago and had such a great experience. The staff was knowledgeable about what I couldn’t have and made me feel very safe, despite having some allergens on the menu. I safely had veggie spring rolls and chicken pad see ew. Their wine is also delicious. They take food allergies seriously here.”

SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa

Location: Marina del Rey, California

“My favorite sushi restaurant ever! They have locations in NY and CA. So consistent, great with food allergies, no dairy in the restaurant. Be sure to tell them if you have sesame or soy allergies because certain pieces of nigiri come with sesame seeds or ponzu on top. I love that they let you make substitutions in their pre-selected sets and are accommodating with food allergies. So delicious, consistent, and an excellent value!”

Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey

Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey

Location: Palm Springs, California

“Highly recommend this spot! Make reservations if you can, it fills up quick. We enjoyed a lollipop roll, Scandinavian roll, yellowtail crudo, and nigiri. The staff marked my dairy and egg allergies and made substitutions for the blue crab and kanikama which had mayo, which I greatly appreciated. Highly recommend this place! “

Mamahuhu

Mamahuhu

Location: San Francisco, California

“I highly recommend this fast casual Chinese restaurant in the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco. I was so pleasantly surprised when the waiter pulled out a laminated allergen menu and was able to tell me exactly which items had dairy and eggs in them. I ordered the Kung Pao plate with veggies and rice and loved it. My dish did contain nuts, so be sure to alert the waiter when you order about your allergies so that you can ensure it is safe if you have a nut allergy.

Updated review from 2024: Pleasantly surprised when I walked in and they had a new menu with less allergens on it but still same deliciousness! I safely had the sweet and sour chicken with white rice and lotus root salad. So good and a great portion for the price! The banana soft serve is apparently dairy free, so I would check about that with the staff! Didn’t get to try it since we were in a rush. Love this place and will always come back when I’m in San Francisco. Love that they have more locations now too!”

Illinois

Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar

Location: Chicago, Illinois

“I love this restaurant. They have an allergen menu!!!! Win! So great with dairy and egg allergies, super knowledgable about allergies, and amazing cocktails. We ordered potstickers, lo mein, Kung Pao chicken, and dry fried green beans. A must try in Chicago!”

Oiistar

Location: Chicago, Illinois

“I had a delicious meal here! So awesome to be able to have ramen now that I’m no longer allergic to eggs, beef, and pork. I appreciated that the ramen is dairy-free and on their menu they clearly state that. They also were very knowledgable about allergies and let me know exactly what I could have.”
