Ina’s Top Allergy-Friendly Asian Food Picks

Hi! I’m Ina and in honor of Lunar New Year I’m excited to share my favorite restaurants where my daughter safely ate with her allergies to peanuts, milk and egg. My finds feature places located in our home state of Colorado as well as from travels to New York. One of my favorites was Samwoojung in New York City where we devoured the Seoul Bulgogi cooked with beautiful and simple ingredients tableside. I really want people to know that the stereotype that Asian food is inherently “unsafe” for food allergies overlooks just how vast, regional, and ingredient-diverse Asian cuisines truly are. Colorado

At Nine Thai

At Nine Thai

Location: Centennial, Colorado

“I was told that the chef does not handle any peanuts, and I could order the pad Thai with no egg. My daughter ate it, and all was well.”

Sukiya Ramen

Location: Greenwood Village, Colorado

“We are regulars here and my daughter safely eats the kids ramen with no egg. I always say our allergies and they take it very seriously. In the past they offered to let me look at ingredients, and the ramen does not contain peanuts. I’m told they do not cook with peanut oil.”

Edo Higan

Location: Littleton, Colorado

“We are regulars at our favorite Japanese spot, where the chef is also the owner. The chef is aware of allergies and has always been accommodating. We order the udon noodles plain with chicken broth, chicken, and veggies. We ask for no egg and the chef even confirms no egg. I’ve been told there is no peanut oil used. My daughter safely eats here.”

New York

Samwoojung

Location: New York, New York

“Disclaimer: I don’t know if they’re particularly “allergy friendly” but we’re a little more lenient on shared kitchens in this part of our allergy journey. Having said that, we’ve eaten here a few times with no issues. You order at the front, and they bring the food to you. I tell them about our allergies, and they label them on the receipt and seem to take it seriously. For my kids, we order galbi stew, and udon noodles. We ask for no egg in the udon. This is a great hole in the wall Korean place in K-town.”

Raku

Location: New York, New York

“Raku SoHo was the end of our NYC udon tour. We went all around K-town, East Village, West Village, etc. and this was the highlight. Not only is it delicious, they’re on top of allergens. They checked ingredients, asked about allergies multiple times, etc. We got udon noodles, with chicken, in chicken broth, with no egg. I was told there are no peanuts in the restaurant. I was also told the “chicken karaage” does have milk, and they’re very careful about egg in the kitchen. Great experience.”

Udon West

Location: New York, New York

“Good food and allergy accommodations. I told them allergies and they marked it on the ticket. The server communicated with the chef and confirmed there is no peanut oil used. They were comfortable with my kids having the udon noodles with no egg and the fried chicken with no dairy.”
