The Oscars are this weekend and while we love to be surprised by the Best Picture winner, getting surprised by a food allergy scene in a movie, not so much. With food allergies increasingly making guest appearances in movies, TV, and other media, we’re fans of getting a sneak preview, which is why we’ve created the largest resource of 42 movies and TV shows that feature food allergies so you can check before you hit play. The Boiling Point

The Boxtrolls

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Description of scene: Sam attempts to accompany Flint Lockwood in his mission to stop his dangerous invention, but she is hindered by a barrage of sharp peanut brittle. As she assists Flint in confronting the machine, she sustains a cut on her arm from the peanut brittle, causing her left side and face to swell. Despite her reluctance to leave Flint’s side, he falls after chewing through a licorice rope, and she is brought back to their flying car by another character. Manny, who is both the cameraman and physician, administers epinephrine to Sam, who immediately sits up and breathes normally again. She is unharmed and flies away with the group.

Nancy Drew has “emergency medical training” and asks for a ballpoint pen and a knife to perform a makeshift tracheotomy on a Trish, who is experiencing an obstructed airway while waiting for the ambulance. Trish is seen being put into an ambulance and ends up being okay after receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Parasite

Character with the allergy: Moon-gwang

Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality due to food allergies.
Description of scene: The Park family’s housekeeper, Moon-gwang, has a peach allergy. The Kim family purposely exposes her to hairs from a peach to get her out of the Park family’s house. Moon-gwang has a reaction, the main symptom of which is coughing.

The Parent Trap

Description of scene: Hallie and Annie are in the dining hall at camp. Just as they are about to see each other, Marva, Sr. steps between them and offers Hallie strawberries. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Description of scene: Maya rubs a concealer infused with oatmeal on Vincent’s face to incapacitate him, causing him to break out in boils.

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank

Reaction: Hank the samari, is fighting Sumo, who is allergic to edamame. While fighting, Jimbo uses his allergy against him and causes an allergic reaction resulting in Hank believing he won the fight.

Peter Rabbit

Character with the allergy: Mr. McGregor
Allergy: Blackberries
Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality due to food allergies.
Description of scene: Four of the rabbits plot to fight off their enemy, Mr. McGregor, by using a slingshot to shoot blackberries towards him. They know he is allergic to blackberries. One of the blackberries goes into Mr. McGregor’s mouth and he begins to have an allergic reaction which is shown by him starting to choke. He has an epipen in his pocket and reaches for it and injects himself. He falls over exhaustedly after the injection.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Description of scene: Puss eats a plate of seafood at a restaurant, despite having a shellfish allergy and mussels and shrimp being visible in the dish. The Princess Switch: Switched Again

Description of scene: When Fiona Pembroke is introduced, there is a reference to her father, Lord Percival Pembroke, who passed away due to anaphylaxis to peanuts. There is no reaction shown.

The Smurfs 2

Description of scene: Blue’s grandfather hands out his trademark corn dogs at Blue’s birthday party. One mother asks if they have any peanuts in them and Grandpa replies that they do not. After the child of the mother who asked the question proceeds to take a bite, the grandfather says, “why would I add peanuts when they are cooked in peanut oil?“ The parents are alarmed and the child spits out the corn dog. We later see Patrick getting off the phone from talking to the allergic boy’s parents. He says the boy is alright and mentions his throat swelling and the appearance of hives. The grandfather proceeds to make sarcastic comments diminishing the seriousness of the reaction.

Your Place or Mine

Description of scene: Debbie’s son, Jack, has food allergies and eczema. It is brought up throughout the movie. She asks about having an alternative dessert at a birthday party, how expensive medications can be.

Zombieland: Double Tap

Description of scene: About halfway through the film, Madison appears to die after being bitten by a zombie. She is later shown to be alive and informs the other characters that she was not transforming into a zombie and was instead having an allergic reaction to peanuts in trail mix.

Archer (Season 4, Ep. 12)

Description of scene: Archer and the gang are on a mission to assassinate someone. Pam is chowing down on cruelty free animal shellfish, but she is allergic to soy, which her food contained.

Arthur (Season 9, Ep. 10)

Reaction: None
Description of scene: At the hospital, Dr. Kingsbury says to Binky that the butterfly did not cause the allergic reaction and adds that Binky is also not allergic to pollen or pet dander, much to Binky’s relief. However, Dr. Kingsbury notes that Binky’s blood test revealed that he is allergic to peanuts. Binky’s friends learn about the allergy and are concerned and understanding and are doing everything to help keep him safe.

B Positive (Season 2, Episode 4)

Description of scene: Free peanuts are being offered at a baseball game. Drew mentions his peanut allergy and how severe it could be.

The Big Bang Theory (Season 1, Episode 16)

Character with the allergy: Howard

Description of scene: Howard pretends to eat a granola bar with peanuts in it and have an allergic reaction to distract Leonard. Leonard rushes him to the hospital, where Howard asks the ER nurse to play along and keep him under observation for an hour or so, which she declines. Howard calls Penny to tell her that he can’t delay Leonard any longer and Penny puts pressure on Howard to continue keeping Leonard out of the apartment until they’re done. Howard ends up actually eating the granola bar with peanuts in it and has a reaction that causes his face and arms to swell.

The Bachelor (Season 27, Ep. 4)

Character with the allergy: Gabi

Description of scene: The group date when the Bachelor was in the Bahamas for a week involved drinking + trying the local seafood. Gabi, one of the contestants, has a shellfish allergy, and couldn’t participate. She said “I literally can’t kiss Zach because he had shellfish”

Bluey (Season 1, Episode 20)

Character with the allergy: Bluey’s family and Indy
Allergy: Gluten; wheat, gluten, sugar or dairy
Reaction: None
Description of scene: In Bluey, there is no character that explicitly states they are gluten free. Bluey often talks about being gluten free and avoiding foods with certain ingredients. Indy, another character on the show, cannot have wheat/gluten, sugar, or dairy. While at a Market, Indy and Bluey search for the perfect purchase but have a hard time.

Bob’s Burgers (Season 1, Ep. 12)

Character with the allergy: Gene and Bob
Allergy: Lobster
Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: Lobsterfest is cancelled in the town due to a storm. Louise, Tina and Gene find a lobster walking down the street and decide to eat it. Their dad Bob, has always told them not to eat lobsters because he himself is allergic. After eating the lobster, they discover that Gene is allergic.

Broad City (Season 1, Episode 10)

Allergy: Shellfish
Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: Abbi and Ilana go out to a fancy restaurant for Abbi’s birthday dinner. Ilana intentionally orders shellfish, knowing that she is allergic, because she thinks she can eat some shellfish (and possibly react) without needing to use an EpiPen. Ilana eats too much shellfish, and Abbi attempts to administer her EpiPen but misses and stabs herself in the leg. They end up in the hospital, and Ilana is okay.

The Bold Type (Season 3, Episode 6)

Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: The characters see plates of food and immediately start eating them, failing to realise that these were intended for Jacqueline’s lunchtime meeting with Bobby. Andrew tasks them with replacing the food, leading to Sutton stealing sandwiches from a conference room. Bobby has a serious peanut allergy and has a reaction to the replaced sandwiches.

Chopped Junior (Season 8)

The Cosby Show (Season 3, Episode 24)

Description of scene: Daniel Tiger helps his family make a peach pie and tries some peaches. He develops red itchy bumps, so Mom Tiger suggests they see Doctor Anna. There they learn that Daniel Tiger has allergies to peaches and he learns all about allergies and how it’s important to tell grownups if a new food makes you feel sick.

Emily in Paris

Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: Emily is working as a waitress and serves a table their food. Later, the customer starts to have symptoms of anaphylaxis. Emily then realizes she has mixed up the words for “green bean” and “mushroom” in French and served a man with a mushroom allergy something that contained mushrooms.

Frasier (Season 4, Ep. 7)

Freaks and Geeks (Season 1, Ep. 13)

The Great British Baking Show (Season 10)

Description of scene: Contestant Rosie Brandreth-Poynter has a nut allergy. In a hand-written note shared by The Great British Baking Show on Twitter, Brandreth-Poynter shared she even had a “nut runner” to keep her area safe, which included storing all of her equipment separate from the other contestants’ gear and washing her bench separately as well.

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 8, Episode 14)

Character with the allergy: Clementine
Allergy: Nuts
Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: A ten year old girl, Clementine, is brought to the hospital by her mother after suffering an allergic reaction after eating something at school with her allergy. She is first given IV medication for her rash, but her reaction progresses and then is given epinephrine.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2, Episode 5)

Character with the allergy: Sid
Allergy: Walnuts
Reaction: Yes, there is a reaction. There is no fatality related to food allergies.
Description of scene: Sid receives a delivery of a basket of cookies, which he finds out was sent by Charlie. The cookies are part of Charlie’s plan to get Sid to reconnect with his friend, Jesse. Later in the episode, Sid reveals he had an allergic reaction to the walnuts in the cookies. The depiction of the reaction shows no symptoms, but Sid is unable to find his epi-pen due to Charlie taking it earlier in the episode because he thought it was a vape. An ambulance is called and Sid is shown to be fine after the medical professionals had taken care of him.

How I Met Your Mother (Season 4, Episode 1)
