ecco un poco | Natural Italian Gelato

Location: Los Angeles, California

“This Gelato store is completely gluten-free, they even have flavors like Cookies and Cream or Cheesecake available, but the best part of visiting this place is getting one of their fresh gluten-free waffle cones, they’re so good! All of the flavors show the allergens, and the workers explain every allergen knowledgeably if you mention your allergies. As a great added extra, every flavor has its own scooper, so you can forget about cross-contamination. They also have vegan options available with the use of different plant-based options depending on the flavors. A must-visit.”

Mister Softee Santa Barbara

Location: Santa Barbara, California

“My daughter and I rode our bikes to Mister Softee’s today to try their soft-serve ice cream. I had reached out ahead of time to determine if she could safely eat there, as most ice cream spots are a no-go due to cross-contamination. I was super pleased with the transparency in their communication with me. We both had a vanilla and chocolate twist in a gluten-free cone. When they took our order, they marked allergy on it and were sure to wipe everything down and wash their hands before preparing our cones. We held off on toppings to minimize the risk. I was super impressed with their protocols and will absolutely be returning.”

Glace

“We were so excited to finally make it to Glace by NoGlu. NoGlu is now a few stores down, with more space, and they still have their amazing pastries, salads, and sandwiches. Glace by NoGlu serves an assortment of ice cream and ice cream treats like macaron ice cream sandwiches! They even have gluten-free cones! We were there on a cold day, so we enjoyed their over-the-top hot chocolate! They have different flavored hot chocolates with a toasted marshmallow rim and whipped cream. So far, we have had the cookies and cream and crème brûlée. Both delicious, but that crème brûlée with white hot chocolate and crunchy-topped whipped cream omg! 100% gluten-free. 100% worth the visit!

UPDATE: They have now added a candy store! Gluten-free items are kept in jars on the top shelf and are only handled by staff.”

Frankie & Jo’s

“Dedicated peanut-free, gluten-free, vegan, and soy-free ice cream shop! This was such a find! They have freshly-made gluten-free waffle cones that smell like heaven! Most of the ice cream is made with coconut milk, but they do have one or two flavors with cashew milk, and one with almonds & pecans. However, they were so accommodating of tree nut allergies. They have a separate nut-free scoop, washed their hands & changed gloves and made sure I was safe! Their menu was also so thorough! They list out every ingredient, so I was personally able to double-check which flavors were nut-free! The seasonal flavor was cookies and creme, and it was amazing!”

“Another Grom location featuring their 100% gluten-free gelato. Pro tip: get the waffle cone because when do you find those freshly made waffle cones gluten-free and not pre-packaged? This location is right next to the city centre, and is open late, so it’s the perfect after-dinner dessert (or mid-day, I won’t judge).”

Frigidarium

Location: Roma

“Went because of previous Spokin reviews and had a great experience! Staff speak good English and are knowledgeable about nut allergies. They also had gluten-free cones! There are a few flavors with tree nuts, but they are kept on one side of the display case. I stuck with the fruit flavors (on the opposite side) and got strawberry and lemon. Each flavor has a dedicated scoop, so I felt comfortable. The staff did say that they occasionally have seasonal flavors with peanuts & other tree nuts, but they always clean the machine before starting the day to keep nut flavors fresh. There were only 2 out of over 20 flavors that day with nuts, so I felt pretty safe and had gelato with no allergy issues!”

GROM – Il Gelato come una volta

Location: Siena

“100% gluten-free gelato chain throughout Italy! I was hesitant to come here, but I had a fantastic experience at the location in Siena. They are usually very busy, but we specifically came at a time when there was no one in the store, so I could ask a lot of questions. Staff clearly understood nut allergies & cross-contamination. They have no peanuts in the store. There are cones with hazelnuts, but those are kept in a separate case from the cups, spoons, and plain cones. They have almonds and hazelnuts as toppings, but those are in sealed jars. The gelato is all in bins, and each bin has its own paddle for serving. There was a hazelnut, almond, and pistachio flavor, but a lot of nut-free flavors and sorbets. Grom has a full allergen chart for every flavor on their website, which you can look up ahead of time. Something to note is that they label all flavors as may contain tree nuts since they are all made in the same facility—this is standard for all gelato in Italy. The man working answered all my questions, wasn’t impatient at all, and willingly washed his hands before making my order. They say they can’t guarantee there is no chance of cross-contamination, but I’ve been told this everywhere in Italy and personally felt much more comfortable here than at any other gelato shop. Safely had vanilla and raspberry sorbet in a cup! Definitely want to check out some of the other locations!”

Don Peppinu | Siracusa

Location: Siracusa

“This gelato spot was incredible. When in Sicily, you have to get Brontë pistachio gelato, and this one was beautiful. A celiac friend recommended this place as having the best protocols, and she’s not wrong. I wouldn’t have typically picked this spot because it seems more touristy, but I trust her and she didn’t steer me wrong. They had cones with the chocolate dip (which is so rare), and they changed their gloves and safely scooped the gelato from the front where it hadn’t been touched. Most of the gelato was gluten-free, and they also had sorbet for dairy-free options. You can get a cone or even a gluten-free brioche. Writing this makes me want to go back to get it all over again.”

GROM – Il Gelato come una volta

“This entire menu is gluten-free! There are nuts on the menu, so I talked to the staff and asked if there were any safe flavors in the back that they could use a fresh scoop from. We split a chocolate and a coconut (I’m not allergic to coconut). They were both delicious. And the cone was so good and crunchy. If you feel comfortable talking to the staff and explaining your nut allergy, I highly recommend it. If you’re only gluten-free and/ or dairy-free, this place is a no-brainer!”
