“No trip to NYC is complete for us without a stop A La Mode—they are an entirely peanut, tree-nut and sesame-free ice cream shop so my kiddo can enjoy without having to worry about cross-contamination. Not all of their flavors are gluten-free, so I like to get their soft serve to avoid any risk of cross-contamination.

“A la mode ice cream lived up to the hype. We visited this amazing shop in East Hampton, NY. They are completely nut, peanut, egg and sesame free. They do have dairy but they have many flavors of dairy free ice cream and dairy free sorbet in a completely separate cooler as well as dairy-free chocolate/vanilla/swirl soft serve.
We visited them 3 times on our week long vacation. It was so great to let my son choose from several flavors and the staff was so knowledgable. I would’ve bought shirts and hats if they sold them!”

ALABAMA
Mr. Gene’s Beans
Location: Fairhope, Alabama
“Love this local ice cream shop for its charm but also because I have never been when they didn’t have a dairy/gluten/nut free soft serve option (usually a sorbet). They do have many other ice cream and topping options, but from what I have been told they always use the same machine for the non-dairy soft serve to avoid cross-contamination. If for whatever reason the non-dairy soft serve is down, they also have great popsicles, sodas, and novelty candies that are allergy-friendly as well! All around great place!”

@emsnutfreeeats, who manages celiac and peanut and tree nut allergies
Tropical Hideaway
Location: Anaheim, California
“All the dole whip flavors are vegan and completely nut-free! My favorite is the traditional pineapple, but they also have orange, raspberry, and some other limited edition fruit flavors from time to time. All the flavors are completely dairy-free and come out of a soft-serve machine, so there are no cross-contamination concerns. From what I could see the Dole Whip machines were being manned by different workers than were handing out the food, and because it is a soft-serve machine, there was no shared handling.”

Golden Spoon
Location: Anaheim, California
“Been coming here for years. Even though most of their staff is high school aged they’re very thorough with allergies. They will clean the soft serve machines for you to ensure there’s no cross-contamination. Typically nut flavors are in the same machine. I avoid the toppings area to be extra safe but the soft serve is always fine for me.”

I found it hard to tell which trucks were open on their website but saw after that they always post where they are the morning of on Instagram, so check out their social media if you’re in the area! Meadowlark Dairy
Location: Pleasanton, California
“I have been having the ice cream here for 10+ years and have never had an issue with my nut allergies! All soft serve ice cream comes out of machines, and there are no toppings. They always have chocolate and vanilla (contains dairy) and strawberry and orange (vegan—manufactured by dole whip, ingredients online). They will put soft serve ice cream in cups with spoons for those with gluten allergies, and everyone wears gloves, so there’s no concern about gluten cross-contact. Highly recommend the strawberry dole whip swirled with vanilla ice cream!”
@emsnutfreeeats, who manages celiac and peanut and tree nut allergies
SOMISOMI
Location: Pleasanton, California
“At this location, the menu indicated which flavors have nuts. They have 2 or 3 items that have nuts—hazelnut and custard. They did not have sesame. This place does soft serve and custard in these fish shell waffles. My son got ube (taro) soft serve swirl with cookies and cream soft serve. What got me was that I mentioned the nut and sesame allergy and then I saw the receipt! It said “nut allergy + change gloves” I was impressed and we’ll go here again to this branch. (Other sites may be different, so always check)”

Mister Softee
Location: Santa Barbara, California
“My daughter and I rode our bikes here to try their soft serve ice cream. I had reached out ahead of time to determine if she could safely eat there as most ice cream spots are a no-go due to cross-contamination. I was super pleased with the transparency in their communication with me. We both had a vanilla and chocolate twist in a gluten-free cone. When they took our order, they marked ‘allergy’ on it and were sure to wipe everything down and wash their hands before preparing our cones. We held off on toppings to minimize the risk. I was super impressed with their protocols and will absolutely be returning.”

They have a few different soft serve flavors and a choice of chocolate or cherry dip and other toppings. They also make soft-serve sundaes, shakes, and ice cream cakes. Their soft serve is oat milk-based. I believe they use almond milk as well. Their cones are gluten-free. Everything on their menu is dairy-free, vegan, and delicious!”

Kohr Brothers Frozen Custard

“This is one of my absolute favorite ice cream places! Technically it’s frozen custard, but it’s delicious all the same. They use soft serve machines so there’s no cross-contamination, and the only flavor with nuts is peanut butter, which is on a separate machine from most other flavors. I usually get vanilla twisted with orange, which is AMAZING!”

Hampton Chocolate Factory

“We found this spot on TikTok for their famous HUGE soft serve ice cream (it’s 5 lbs of ice cream!) and a ton of toppings – came here with my non allergy daughter and would have never thought it could be allergy friendly but the only ice cream they have is soft serve and only in vanilla or chocolate. They also have cups not just cones and they said they absolutely can handle allergies – at least nuts. They definitely do have nuts but I would be comfortable that I could find something for my daughter. Pro tip: get the kids size cup – it was huge!”

Niu Soft Serve Parlour
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii
“They do serve some nuts (macadamia nut topping and peanut butter smoothies). I asked if any of the soft serve flavors had nuts, and they said no and listed off all the options that would be safe for me and any modifications I should make. When I asked about the waffle cones, the woman went to call her son on the phone to ask. I ended up getting the Hot Kulolo sundae and they offered to give me Oreos as a topping again instead of the standard macadamia nuts. I love this spot and definitely recommend it!”

Lahaina Ice Cream Parlour

“Although this is an ice cream shop (serving Lappert’s ice cream) we were safely able to have Dole Whip Soft Serve here. The staff was very accommodating and let me read the package labeling of the Dole Whip, wore gloves and explained how often they sanitize their machine and if they had used it for regular dairy soft serve at all or recently at all. It was so nice for my son to be able to have a treat in this shop along with everyone else!”

ILLINOIS
Upton’s Breakroom
Location: Chicago, Illinois
“Upton’s Breakroom is a vegan and nut-free restaurant in Chicago. I cannot speak for the food, but the soft serve ice cream is INCREDIBLE! The best I’ve ever had, for sure! The soft serve is made with Temptation (soy-based) and comes out of a dedicated machine. The base is vanilla, but they switch it up with fun flavors like fresh strawberry and pink lemonade, too! They make their chocolate and strawberry house in-house too, and the employees could not be kinder!”

Vaca’s Creamery

“The ice cream was a little on the pricey side, but It. Was. So. Good. Oat milk soft serve ice cream? Yes please! They have chocolate, vanilla, swirl, and a seasonal flavor. They serve milkshakes and sundaes and have plenty of toppings to choose from (there were a couple peanut-related toppings so only eat at your comfort level). But guess what?! THEY HAD AN INGREDIENT BOOK with all the toppings, ice cream flavors, and the different types of cones’ ingredients! Will absolutely go again.”

“This is a small farm that makes and sells goat milk soaps, cheeses, and soft serve ice cream. The cheese is great but the ice cream was our favorite—a must try. There’s some risk of cc at the factory but that works for us. The flavors are chocolate and vanilla (and swirled) and they had Joy brand cones. There’s also a chocolate dipped option but we skipped that. You can eat the ice cream out back near the goats; very pretty and relaxing vibe.”

However, the soft serve is homemade and made separately from the hard ice cream scoops. The soft serve flavors are seasonal, I happened to get the Krispy Kreme Glazed Donut flavor.
