Austin Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

1200x8001 3

Hi! I’m Abby, and I’m 19 years old. I live in Houston, Texas, and I go to Austin quite frequently for fun weekend trips. Since being diagnosed with gluten, soy, peanut, tree nut, sesame, and egg white allergies, our go-to restaurants quickly changed! Austin is a pretty outdoorsy city, so you can’t visit without hiking at the Barton Creek Greenbelt, paddle-boarding on Lake Austin, and watching a sunset at Mt. Bonnell. But of course, one of the reasons I love Austin is because of how many allergy-friendly restaurants there are. Check out all of the places I ate at on the Spokin app @abbykohl or on my Instagram @safeandfreefoodie!

DAY 1

Hotel: Hampton Inn & Suites Austin @ The University/Capitol

We always stay at the Hampton on Lavaca Street when we visit Austin! It’s in a great location because it is down the street from the University of Texas and right in the middle of downtown Austin. There is a rooftop pool and patio which is a great place to hangout on a chill night or watch the sunset!

Breakfast: Mozart’s Coffee Roaster

Mozart’s Coffee Roasters has a large selection of tea, coffee, and specialty drinks. They have all types of milk from whole milk, to almond, coconut, and oat milk. They keep all of the milks separate, so the almond milk doesn’t touch the coconut milk and so on. They have quite a few pastries and desserts too, but I skipped out on those. Mozart’s is on the lake and has a large deck, so it’s great for a peaceful cup of coffee in the morning or to get some work done!

Lunch: P. Terry’s Burger Stand

P. Terry’s has a detailed allergen menu online. They use canola oil in the fryers and have a dedicated fryer for the fried. They don’t have gluten-free buns, but they can do a lettuce wrap. I’m pretty sure the cheese has soy, so I always stick with a plain bacon burger.

Venue: Covert Park at Mt. Bonnell

Going to Convert Park while in Austin never gets old! There is a staircase that leads up to Mt. Bonnell where it overlooks Lake Austin. I love going in the evening to watch the sunset. The view is breathtaking and nothing can beat a Texas sunset!

Treat: Zucchini Kill Bakery

Zucchini Kill is a gluten-free, soy-free, and vegan bakery. In most of their treats, they use a rice flour blend. The labeling is very clear and easy to tell if it contains any allergens. They also use Enjoy Life chocolate chips, which was nice to see! I had the chocolate chip cookie and the coffee cake, which were both amazing!

Dinner: Picnik

Picnik has an entirely gluten-free kitchen with limited nuts and soy! There is a very detailed allergen list online, and the staff is very educated and helpful when it comes to food allergies. We started with the chicken tenders as an appetizer, and I had the Picnik melt for my entree. It was all so good and hard to believe that the entire place is gluten free!

DAY 2

Breakfast: Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey Lane Cafe is local to Austin and they have a great breakfast/brunch menu that is served all day. They have gluten-free pancakes along with many other gluten-free options. They also have a lot of vegan options too for those allergic to eggs or dairy. There are multiple locations, and they are all great with allergies.

Lunch: Flower Child

I have always loved Flower Child, and that didn’t change after being diagnosed with food allergies! The menu is marked with gluten-free and dairy-free items. All the ingredients are super fresh, and the food is overall made with clean, natural ingredients. I had the heirloom tomato and watermelon salad with a side of the gluten-free mac n cheese. The mac n cheese is to die for, and I always have to get some no matter what I get!

Treat: Dream Bakery

Dream Bakery is a 100% gluten free bakery! They also have keto options and a list of soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and nut-free options. We got the croissants and lemon bars, and they were amazing!

Venue: Barton Creek Greenbelt

The Barton Creek Greenbelt is such a cool place to go and hike or take a swim. There is a trail that goes for miles, but we usually just do a small portion of it. We start at the trailhead and it’s about a 20 minute walk to the creek where you can get in the water and swim. We like to take snacks and drinks and hangout for a few hours!

Treat: Lick Honest Ice Creams

Lick has many dairy free/vegan options and only one flavor contains nuts. They had many unique flavors, and every flavor listed if it contained any allergens. I had a scoop of the coffee and a scoop of the salted caramel… both were great!

Dinner: TLC Austin

TLC Austin is a mostly gluten-free restaurant where everything can be made gluten free. They fry in sunflower oil and everything that goes into the fryer is gluten-free. There is no soy in the kitchen, and they only have nuts in a few items. I had the brussel sprouts and a shrimp boil with the cocktail sauce and lemon and herb butter. Everything was great!
