University of Rhode Island
“I have had a mostly positive experience so far at URI! They don’t have as many gluten-free options as I would have originally hoped for, but I have discovered places to go as the years went on. The gluten-free food in the dining halls is not bad, somewhat plain but not bad. They have gluten-free snack options at the dining halls. They have a separate allergy section in the dining halls with designated toasters. Once you can bring your car on campus, there are a lot more options off campus! I have made it work, and it seems the campus is improving their focus on dietary restrictions. One dining hall is being expanded!”

Butterfield Dining & Residence Hall
“The section for allergies had more options than the other dining hall (Mainfare). Most staff were informed. Options were still limited, but they provided gluten-free products like bread if you wanted to make a sandwich. They also had gluten-free desserts.”

Junius “Babe” Gertz Cafe
“I always love getting a Starbucks refresher from here in the mornings! They have plenty of gluten-free snack options and to-go meals such as sushi.”

Ram’s Den
“The Rams Den is a great place for students as they have many different options. I enjoyed getting smoothies and breakfast sandwiches there (they have gluten-free bread). I am not exactly sure what their preparation was like. If you are very sensitive to cross-contamination, it is definitely worth asking. I am not as sensitive, so it was not an issue for me. They have an Asian fusion station that seems very good, but many options have soy sauce. I will have to ask what they have that is gluten-free once I get back to school!”

Brookside Bistro
“Brookside has a bistro on the first floor, and it is my absolute favorite option for breakfast on campus! You can use your dining dollars towards it, which was very helpful. They have an alternative option for gluten-free bread for the breakfast sandwiches, which is what I now get.”

High 1 URI
“They recently started selling gelato, which was delicious! Some options contained gluten, but I was able to get strawberry in a cup! I asked them to use a different scoop to avoid cross-contamination, and they did! The staff was very kind and helpful.”

Kingston Pizza
“Delicious pizza near campus!! Just a walk up the hill. They have gluten-free crust, and it actually is good (compared to other gluten-free crusts I’ve tried). They also use separate pizza cutters and trays!!”

Providence Bagel
“Great on-campus breakfast spot! I get the gluten-free everything bagel either with cream cheese or for a breakfast sandwich. They asked me if it was an allergy or preference so that they would prepare it for me separately in a gluten-free dedicated toaster! Great service and delicious every time. Located in the emporium.”

NY Bagels of RI
“Around 10 minutes from the URI campus. They have delicious gluten-free bagels. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a separate toaster when I went, but I purchased multiple so I just took them home to toast!”

Belmont Market
“This is one of the best markets near URI. I love getting the prepared food for an easy meal. They have so many options catering to different allergies. They have many allergen-friendly snacks as well. I like getting the grilled chicken to put on top of salads!”
