Nut, Milk, Egg, Pumpkin, and Sesame-Free Norway Top Picks

Hi! I’m Emme, and I recently studied abroad in Bergen, Norway, with trips up to Tromsø, Lofoten, Svolvær, and Flåm along the way. Even with peanut, tree nut, dairy, egg, sesame, and pumpkin allergies, I found the most delicious meals and went on life-changing excursions. My favorite restaurant was Nyt in Tromsø, where I had a reindeer burger; it sounds crazy, but it was actually really good! If you visit, don’t miss No Problem Sportfishing out of Svolvær; I saw orcas, traveled across the fjords, watched the midnight sun stay up until 2 am, and caught massive coalfish and cod. In Bergen, you have to hike the Seven Mountains; it’s a rite of passage. Also take the tram up Mount Fløyen to meet the very friendly goats! Fjellskål Seafood Market

Fjellskål Seafood Market

Location: Bergen, Norway

“The freshest seafood in Bergen!

Fjellskål is the indoor food hall at Bergen’s historic Fish Market, right on the harbor with a direct view of the water and an attached restaurant if you’d rather sit down for a meal. Almost everything they sell is caught right off the coast of Norway, so you’re getting some of the freshest seafood you can find anywhere. The displays are stunning, everything from sea urchins and scallops to langoustines, octopus, and oysters.

I bought a beautiful piece of salmon straight from the counter and cooked it back at my place, which was a total win. Since my allergens (dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, sesame, pumpkin seed) don’t overlap with fresh, whole seafood, this was such a low-stress way to enjoy a proper Norwegian meal without worrying about what was in a sauce or seasoning I couldn’t verify.

If you’re visiting Bergen with food allergies, especially if you have access to a kitchen, this is a fantastic stop for fresh, safe ingredients!”

MENY Bergen Storsenter

MENY Bergen Storsenter

Location: Bergen, Norway

“One of my favorite allergen-friendly grocery store in Bergen!

Meny was a total lifesaver during my semester in Bergen! They have dedicated “Fri For” (free from) sections throughout the store, clearly marked so you can quickly find allergen-friendly products without hunting through every aisle. As someone managing six food allergies, this made grocery shopping so much less stressful.

Their dairy-free section is stocked with amazing brands like Oatly, Alpro, and more. My personal favorites were the Oatly To Go matchas and chocolate milks, which I bought on repeat all semester. You’ll also find plant-based yogurts, protein drinks, barista milks, and plant-based desserts.

One product I especially loved and now genuinely miss was the Valsoia ice cream bars. They were so good that I really wish they were sold in the US!

I will say the overall selection is a bit more limited than what I’m used to at home in the US, and I did find myself missing some of my usual go-to brands. That said, Meny did have a decent variety.”

Trekroneren

Location: Bergen, Norway

“A safe reindeer hot dog in Bergen!

Trekroneren is a super popular hot dog stand in the heart of Bergen, and I had to try it! I was able to safely order a reindeer hot dog without the bun to keep it simple for my allergies.

A heads up: there is a real risk of cross-contact at a busy street stand like this, so I’d only recommend going if you’re comfortable navigating that and know your own risk tolerance. Ordering without the bun helped reduce my risk since the buns are handled alongside other ingredients.

Also, definitely go at a time when the line isn’t wrapped around the block! Trekroneren is a Bergen icon and gets seriously busy, so aim for an off-peak hour if you can.”

Deja Brew

Deja Brew

Location: Svolvær, Norway

“A cozy safe coffee stop in Lofoten!

Deja Brew in Lofoten was such a great find that I ended up going back three times during my trip! The staff were friendly and made me a soy iced latte that was completely safe for my dairy allergy. The cafe itself has such a lovely atmosphere, sunny window seats, fresh flowers on the tables, and a perfect view of the street to people-watch while sipping.

If you’re traveling through Lofoten and need a safe coffee stop with plant-based milk options, Deja Brew is worth adding to your list!”

Magic Ice Bar Tromsø

Magic Ice Bar Tromsø

Location: Tromsø, Norway

“A safe drink at the coolest bar in Tromsø!

Magic Ice Bar in Tromsø was such a unique experience! The whole bar is made of ice, and I was able to safely enjoy their signature drink made with vodka and a mix of raspberry and strawberry syrups. The staff let me read the ingredients for every single component of the drink.”

Cactus Lagunen

Location: Rådal, Norway

“Are you craving Chipotle? Come to Cactus, Norway’s Chipotle!

Ever since I came to Norway, I have been craving Chipotle. A friend had recommended Cactus to me, but I was a little hesitant for fear of cross-contact.

I walked into Cactus with my allergy card and asked the waitress for an allergen and ingredient list. She immediately provided me with one and took the time to walk me through each and every allergen, the cooking process, and the risk of cross-contact.

The design and setup are very similar to Chipotle, which made me feel very comfortable, especially because the staff were very knowledgeable! The staff member changed her gloves, wiped the counter down, and got fresh ingredients to add into my bowl.

I got a bowl with ground beef, white rice, black beans, lettuce, and corn salsa! I highly recommend this place as the staff are very knowledgeable of food allergies and will take every measure to limit cross-contact!”

No Problem Sportfishing

No Problem Sportfishing

Location: Svolvær, Norway

“If you’re in Norway, you have to go fishing!

No Problem Sportfishing is based in Svolvær, Norway and is run by a man named Nigel. He was phenomenal with my allergies on board as we traveled through the beautiful Norwegian fjords.

I was able to take this fish home and make delicious fish tacos with friends!”

FINT kafé & bar

FINT kafé & bar

Location: Tromsø, Norway

“The coziest allergen-friendly chai in the Arctic Circle!

Fint was such a warm find in Tromsø. I walked in, presented my allergy card, and the staff were completely unfazed. I ordered an iced chai latte with Oatly, and they showed me the carton so I could check the ingredients myself, then walked me through the whole prep process start to finish.

I cannot recommend Fint enough if you’re navigating Tromsø with allergies!”

No Stress Tromsø

No Stress Tromsø

Location: Tromsø, Norway

“The best, no stress allergen-free cocktail!

The bartenders at No Stress were absolutely phenomenal! I presented them with my allergy card, and they immediately cleaned the prep area, washed every piece of cutlery/glass involved, and showed me the ingredients in every syrup/juice. They were incredibly aware of how to limit cross-contact and allowed me to watch the whole process of them making my drink.

I ordered the Eplekake, which was basically apple pie in a glass. I cannot recommend this place enough! Best cocktail I’ve ever had!”

Nyt

Nyt

Location: Tromsø, Norway

“Would it really have been a trip to the Arctic without trying reindeer?! No!

Nyt was such a standout in Tromsø! From the moment I presented my allergy card, the waitstaff were on it. Genuinely knowledgeable, calm, and thorough in a way that made the whole meal feel safe instead of stressful. Even though the kitchen was small, they carved out a separate prep area just for my food, and multiple staff checked in on me throughout service to make sure I was doing okay.

I ordered the reindeer burger, which normally comes on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and brown cheese (it’s a Norwegian thing!), served with grilled potatoes.

They modified it for my allergies, and it was so good. If you’re navigating Tromsø with allergies, add Nyt to your list!”

Sweet Heart

Sweet Heart

Location: Tromsø, Norway

“Hands down the best chocolate ever!

Sweet Hearts in Tromsø is a candy shop that makes fudge and a wide array of sweets in-house and imports some things too. I walked in and asked if they had anything dairy free, and they gave me a NoMo bar. As someone with 6 anaphylactic allergies including dairy, egg, and tree nuts, finding a chocolate bar that is genuinely delicious is harder than you’d think. I grabbed the caramel and the salted popcorn, and both were incredible.

I have literally searched candy shops and grocery stores all over Europe for NoMo ever since discovering it here. If you are traveling through Tromsø with allergies, walk in and stock up. Your suitcase will thank you!”
