Honolulu Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

1200x8001

Hi everyone, I’m Amanda! I’m 18 years old and live in California. I’m allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. My family travels to Honolulu every year to see my grandparents, and the food is always one of my favorite parts of our trip. I reviewed all of these spots on the Spokin app, and you can find me @amandayoung03. You can also follow me on Instagram @youngnwanderlust or check out my blog, youngwanderlust.com, where I post allergy travel content as well as general guides, tips, and recommendations!

DAY 1

Lunch: Tane Vegan Izakaya

Location: Honolulu

Tane Vegan Izakaya is a 100% plant-based sushi restaurant! As someone allergic to fish and shellfish, I was so excited to try it. My whole family enjoyed the innovative dishes, and I can’t wait to go back again one day. There are many items that can be made gluten-free, and most are nut-free.

Groceries: Down to Earth Organic & Natural

Location: Honolulu

This is my favorite grocery store in Hawai’i! They have a large selection of vegan and allergy-friendly products (milks, breads, etc.) as well as a deli, hot food bar, and dessert section with tons of options.

Treat: Waiola Shave Ice

Location: Honolulu

This is my favorite shave ice shop on the island. There are no nuts on the menu, and almost all of the syrups are dairy-free.

DAY 2

Venue: Diamond Head

Location: Honolulu

This is one of my favorite hikes in Honolulu! There are sometimes food vendors onsite (i.e. shave ice for after), but I mainly recommend it because the view is spectacular and it’s an allergy-friendly activity.

Groceries: KCC Farmers Market

Location: Honolulu

The KCC Farmer’s Market has tons of tropical produce like dragon fruit, papaya, and pineapple, as well as fresh juices, popsicles, acai bowls, haupia (coconut pudding), mochi, and more. You can speak directly to each vendor about the ingredients and potential for cross-contamination.

Day 3

Treat: Holey Grail Donuts

Location: Honolulu

Holey Grail’s donuts are made from taro, a starchy root vegetable, and they are all free from dairy and eggs! There is one donut, the acai bowl donut, that contains peanut butter, but this is not offered every day and the others are nut-free. Note that they are fried in coconut oil; however, the donuts are super light, airy, and crispy, and the flavors are delicious and innovative. I definitely recommend this spot!

Treat: Banan Waikiki Beach Shack

Location: Honolulu

Banan’s soft serve is made entirely from fruit, but it’s still super creamy and delicious. The menu has some nuts on it, but it’s otherwise free of all allergens.

Venue: Waikiki Beach

Location: Honolulu

Waikiki Beach is a great spot to swim, watch the sunset, have a picnic, or catch waves in the summer. There are many restaurants and food stores around, including two of my favorites, Holey Grail Donuts and Banan.

Day 4

Brunch: Peace Cafe

Location: Honolulu

This vegan restaurant has smoothies, lattes, rice plates, sandwiches, salads, noodle dishes, and desserts (mochi cake, ice cream, etc). The staff was knowledgeable and accommodating of my nut allergy, and there are no dairy or eggs on the premises!

Treat: Edible

Location: Honolulu

Edible serves edible cookie dough and six-inch cookies, and they have one vegan option (chocolate chip). The server used a clean spoon without me asking, and the vegan cookie dough is kept in a separate area. It’s pretty rich/sweet but a nice treat, and I always love to see a dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free option at a “regular” bakery.

Day 5

Lunch: The Ripple of Smiles

Location: Honolulu

The Ripple of Smiles has both a vegan and non-vegan menu, and the vegan menu is free of all dairy, eggs, and seafood. The staff was accommodating of my nut allergy and offered alternate sauces instead of the peanut sauce.
