Tree Nut and Gluten-Free Spain and Malta Top Picks

Hi! I’m Lindsay! I recently traveled to Spain and Malta and found plenty of safe spots to eat while managing both a severe tree nut allergy and a gluten intolerance from lupus. I’ve shared them all on the Spokin app—and they’re also featured in this guide! One highlight was Restaurante Doña Rufina in Sevilla, where the gluten-free paella was so good we went back twice. While you’re in Sevilla, don’t miss the amazing architecture at Plaza de España or the views from Setas de Sevilla. You can also consider a fun day trip to Gibraltar, only two hours away! In Malta, be sure to explore beyond Valletta—the island has so many different sights and experiences to discover. Restaurante Doña Rufina

Restaurante Doña Rufina

Location: Sevilla, Spain

“Gluten-free paella! We tried finding gluten-free paella at other restaurants, and there were cross-contamination concerns, but this restaurant had safe paella. We ate at the rooftop terrace that had beautiful views of the town at night! This menu also listed the allergens in each dish next to the item, which was really helpful. We had the Iberian meat paella and the grilled vegetables. Update: it was so good we came back a second time for the paella!”

Bar Baratillo

“Grabbed tapas here before a flamenco show nearby. They have a separate gluten-free menu, so make sure to ask for that! Both menus listed the allergens next to each dish. I had the grilled artichokes and the chorizo. The flavor profiles were incredible.”

El Pintón

Location: Sevilla, Spain

“Had lunch here and tried gazpacho for the first time! Menu was labeled; however, I will note there weren’t many gluten-free or nut-free options to choose from. However, the waitress double-checked my allergens with the chef, and the gazpacho was really good!”

MOKAMBO | Alfalfa

“We stayed at the hotel next door, which had a relationship with this restaurant. We had one free breakfast included with our stay, and the menu was all labeled. Gluten-free bread options were available for almost every option, and when we ordered, we were able to notate our allergens (we ordered through text, which at first made me nervous, but the staff confirmed everything). I had the salmon and lox!”

“100% gluten-free restaurant! We came here for dinner one night, and I will say we had better food elsewhere—the food was just okay. But it’s fun to have a choice of anything on the menu. We decided to come back another night just for dessert. There were limited nuts on the menu, and the staff informed me that they could make any of the desserts nut-free, (only one option had nuts, so I felt safer ordering). We had the cheesecake and it was delicious! I would recommend coming here for a safe meal or just for dessert!”

Orsini Restaurante - Pizzería Sevilla Centro

“All of the pizzas and pastas here could be made gluten-free! The menu was also labeled with all of the allergens, and then they also had a completely separate gluten-free menu. We had a BBQ pizza and we both agreed it was so good (my husband isn’t gluten-free so that’s saying a lot!)”

Restaurante El Pasaje Tapas

Restaurante El Pasaje Tapas

Location: Sevilla, Spain

“Make sure you ask for a dedicated gluten-free menu! The regular menu also lists the allergens. At first, I was nervous because I noticed the salmon and tuna tartare on the main menu said it contained nuts. But when the server brought out the gluten-free menu, that icon was removed. So I thought there were inconsistencies, but the server explained that the nuts were in the bread, and the gluten-free version came with different crackers that were nut-free. We had a safe meal, and the food was so good. As always, triple-check with your server if you’re ever unsure! I’m glad she was knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable with all of my questions.”

Carrefour Express

Carrefour Express

“We had this grocery store right next to our Airbnb, so we were able to grab fresh produce and eggs for our room. They had a gluten-free section of pasta and bread as well!”

Restaurante Da Pino

Restaurante Da Pino

“The menu clearly labeled which foods had which allergens. I ordered a steak with a cream sauce and beef carpaccio. The staff brought out gluten-free bread to start the meal as well! I felt extremely safe eating here, and the staff spoke great English and understood allergies. After our meal, our server told us to come back because they offer a lot of gluten-free items, such as pizza. The food was delicious.”

Topo Gigio Pizzeria

Topo Gigio Pizzeria

Location: Il-Mellieħa, Malta

“The menu itself wasn’t labeled, but they offered gluten-free pizza! We ordered a Maltese sausage pizza and we talked to the staff to make sure there was no cross-contact with the pesto pizzas. It was really good!”

Roots Restaurant

Roots Restaurant

Location: Marsaxlokk, Malta

“The menu was labeled, however, I tried ordering the salmon (which was safe for my allergens according to the menu), and the waiter brought my allergy cards to the chef and told me I couldn’t have the sauce they would normally put on it; so I just had a plain piece of salmon. To start out, they have gluten-free bread for the table and it was delicious! They also gave us sides of potatoes, veggies, and salad with our meal. When I was ordering, my waiter told me I could have a salad with no dressing, but the salad that was delivered to my table had dressing. I called him over to confirm that the food was all safe, and he immediately took the salad away. Overall the food was good, and I’m glad I kept asking questions. I’d still recommend this place, but as anyone with allergies knows, just stay vigilant and don’t be afraid to challenge the staff when you feel unsure! The woman next to us couldn’t have dairy or soy, and she also enjoyed a safe meal!”

Lions Den Sannat Lions Football Club

“We took a day trip doing an ATV tour around Gozo. When we booked the trip, we noted that I had dietary restrictions since lunch was included during this excursion. However, for some reason the tour group never got my note. When we arrived to the restaurant, I handed the staff my allergy cards. Even though lunch was preset with the group, it contained gluten, so they made me a fresh salad with tuna on top and also gave me oil and vinegar on the side. I was impressed they were able to pivot on short notice (the group was large), and they understood my allergies. The salad was fresh and delicious!”

Giorgio's

Giorgio’s

“The menu was labeled with gluten-free options and the waitstaff was extremely helpful. I ordered the fish soup and chicken caesar salad. At first, the waiter brought my allergy cards back to the chef and said I couldn’t have the dressing for the salad. After talking through how I didn’t have a sesame allergy, they said I would be okay. I’m glad they were checking and we were able to talk through the dishes. The food was delicious and I’m impressed with all of the flavors. Highly recommend. Update: I went back for a second time and the server remembered us and took just as much of a precaution as the first time! I ordered the same items to be safe, and it was just as delicious!”

Hammett's Gastro Bar

Hammett’s Gastro Bar

Location: Tas-Sliema, Malta

“A must-go spot if you’re gluten-free! The menu itself didn’t list the allergens, but the staff was extremely knowledgeable. The concept for the restaurant is small, shareable plates. We had the steamed rice, edamame, tuna, and steamed fish. Some of those dishes had to be modified to be gluten-free. When the server would bring out the food they would say “gluten-free ___”. My husband ordered two additional dishes that I couldn’t have, but he also said they were delicious. We even split dessert of crème brûlée (I almost never order dessert with a nut allergy, but this place made me feel extremely comfortable, and I was able to safely enjoy it!). If you have dietary restrictions of any kind, I highly recommend this place—the food was amazing.”

AKI

“They were able to make me safe sushi rolls and also had gluten-free soy sauce. The waitress ran through the menu and pointed out safe options for me since the menu wasn’t labeled. I tried ordering a spicy edamame to start and the waitress talked to the chef and he was worried about cross-contact with my allergens so we stayed away. They were helpful with taking my allergy cards to the chef, so I felt safe, but the edamame still came out and was delivered to the table. Other than that, it was a safe meal, and all of the food was so fresh and delicious.”

Arkadia Foodstore Valletta

“They have a ton of gluten-free products, including a whole section of Schar! There aren’t many “nut-free” allergy options, but the store is large enough with many fruits, meats, etc.”

SPAR Express Valletta

“There was a gluten-free section within the store. The grocery store itself was a decent size, and it offered a ton of fresh fruits and vegetables. The store was very clean, and I bought some gluten-free snacks here!”
