We were able to customize both layers. They did tell us that the “M&M” type toppings are made by Unreal and have a cross contamination warning on them so we opted to avoid those. We were wanting ice cream (sorbet for my son) and came across Icicles on Yelp. My husband ran in to check out the situation. I was so impressed and grateful that they have at least 3-4 signs up asking about food allergies. They have dedicated areas for dairy and/or nut-free, and told my husband before making our son’s dairy-free and nut-free concoction: “This is a dedicated dairy/nut-free tray. I’ve already changed my gloves and gotten clean utensils from the back.” And then, the employee went to the back for fresh toppings to avoid cross contamination. Brad, the owner, responded to my email right away sharing product ingredients and pictures. This was very helpful. They do have some top 8 free toppings, however, some of the topping bar ingredients may have cross contamination but they will provide fresh toppings from the back upon request. Their milkshakes can be made with almond milk upon request as well. This was such a great experience to have a real ice cream date with friends.”

49. Sweet Republic

Location: Scottsdale, Arizona

@serenesafe, who manages peanut, tree nut, milk, and sesame allergies

50. Mr. Gene’s Beans

Location: Fairhope, Alabama

“Love this local ice cream shop for its charm but also because I have never been when they didn’t have a dairy/gluten/nut-free soft serve option (usually a sorbet). They do have many other ice cream and topping options but, from what I have been told, they always use the same machine for the non-dairy soft serve to avoid cross contamination. It’s always a good idea to ask and make sure, but that has been the case for as many years as I have been there! I usually get the rainbow sprinkles as well, as they are typically in a separate container from the other toppings and served with a clean spoon. If for whatever reason the non-dairy soft serve is down, they also have great popsicles, sodas, and novelty candies that are allergy-friendly! All around great place!”

@allergystrategy, who manages peanut, milk, egg, fish, and shellfish allergies
