“I absolutely love a la mode. I always make it a point to stop by whenever I got into NYC. Their staff is amazing, always friendly, and helpful. They use separate scoops for all of their flavors and the best part is that they are super allergy-friendly! They have plenty of dairy-free options and they’re whole facility is nut, egg, and sesame-free! My favorite part is the toppings. To have the ability to walk in and pick whatever cone, toppings, or flavors I like is priceless! They also have the most amazing soft serve ice cream! The ice cream is made to order using liquid nitrogen, so it’s scooped from a base and then they would add the mix-ins separately (nuts and/or gluten-containing cookies, etc.) I always say I have an allergy, and they change gloves and use clean equipment! I love their chocolate and vanilla flavors! I usually avoid the sprinkles/toppings just to be on the safe side because they are in an area with almonds (although they all have separate jars!) but I have gotten their caramel and chocolate sauce before and both are so good! Location: Mount Airy, Maryland

“We LOVE getting our ice cream at this small farm. We often buy pints to go too! Staff is very knowledgeable about allergens. I’ve emailed with the owners. They run plain flavors first and then any containing gluten or mix-ins (the malted flavor does have a possible cross contamination warning on it from the factory that produces the malted milk balls). They then take all equipment apart for full cleaning and reassembly. We have been eating ice cream here for years and fully feel confident in their operation.”

86. The Wild Sugar

Location: Evans, Georgia

“Their coconut and sorbet machine are top 8 free (with the exception of coconut being the tree nut). They do have a gluten-free cookie however it does contain soybean if you have to avoid that. Brad, the owner, responded to my email right away sharing product ingredients and pictures. This was very helpful. They do have some top 8 free toppings however some of the topping bar ingredients may have cross contamination but they will provide fresh toppings from the back upon request. Their milk shakes can be made with almond milk upon request as well. This was such a great experience to have a real ice cream date with friends.”

Location: Colchester, Vermont

“I contacted this ice cream shop about their maple Creemees. They said they are nut-free and self contained in their own machine. There are many nuts on premise so they said to inform the staff who can wash their hands and get a cup or cone from a fresh box.”

91. Sweet Republic

Location: Scottsdale, Arizona

“SIX dairy-free flavors options! All kept in a separate case from the rest of the dairy containing flavors, and with their own dedicated dairy free scoops. Nuts are present so I usually don’t get toppings to avoid cross contamination. I love the coconut flavor, the chocolate, and the basil lime!”

@serenesafe, who manages peanut, tree nut, milk, and sesame allergies

92. Mr. Gene’s Beans

Location: Fairhope, Alabama

“Love this local ice cream shop for its charm but also because I have never been when they didn’t have a dairy/gluten/nut-free soft serve option (usually a sorbet). They do have many other ice cream and topping options, but from what I have been told they always use the same machine for the non-dairy soft serve to avoid cross contamination. It’s always a good idea to ask and make sure, but that has been the case for as many years as I have been there! I usually get the rainbow sprinkles as well, as they are typically in a separate container from the other toppings and served with a clean spoon. If for whatever reason the non-dairy soft serve is down, they also have great popsicles, sodas, and novelty candies that are allergy friendly as well! All around great place!”

93. Love Creamery

Location: Duluth, Minnesota

“Just WOW! Took my sons to Love Creamery and we had such an amazing experience. Menu clearly labeled and they asked us several questions about allergies. For my son with a soy allergy they went to the back and retrieved his ice cream from a new container with a clean spoon. Vegan and gluten-free options as well.”

“The owner here is super passionate about what he does. The menu does change every 2-3 months, but it was very well labeled. There are nuts but he super sanitized the scoop and answered all questions we had. We ate the island time coconut sorbet with cocoa nibs for my daughter. If you do the HK waffle cone it’s super insta worthy.”

96. Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe

Location: Waukee, Iowa

“We went here recently and while they do have a warning here about allergies, they take a lot of precautions. The person helped us washed his hands, changed gloves and was overall just very cautious and conscientious when handling our cones. They have dole whip here and their dole whip flavors rotate every week! My daughter safely had the soft serve. The scooped ice cream was kemps, which we aren’t ok with but it’s nice to have a safe soft serve option at a local place.”
