Peanut, Tree Nut, and Sesame-Free Japan Local Picks Guide

Hi! My name is Sofia, and I am an allergy mama managing anaphylactic sesame and tree nut allergies, as well as peanut OIT in Okinawa, Japan. See my insider picks for the best places to eat in Okinawa, like Wake & Bagels for a homemade (sesame free!!) bagel by the beach. While you’re there, also make sure to walk along the Sunabe Seawall for expansive views of the East China Sea. Cafe San Francisco

Location: Chatan, Japan

“Safely ate a delicious macaroni and cheese. And the view is unbeatable!! For the grown-ups, they also serve a delicious espresso martini.”

Blue Seal

Blue Seal

Location: Chatan, Japan

“An Okinawa staple! The best part? The menu online shows what allergens are present, so there’s no language barrier and no fear! There are even a couple dairy-free options. We have safely enjoyed many flavors of ice cream at several of the Blue Seal locations on hot days.”

Yasai Batake- Banana Stand

Yasai Batake- Banana Stand

Location: Okinawa, Japan

“The best produce stand! Selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and local eggs, all brought in daily. Our favorite place to get fresh local produce, and even try new exotic fruits.”

Bacon Bar Japan

Bacon Bar Japan

Location: Okinawa, Japan

“LOVE this spot. Owner has been present every time I’ve been in and is EXTREMELY proactive. Speaks English, so also no language barrier re: the allergen. There is only one item on the menu that has sesame, and the owner told me there is a designated spot for that item on the grill. Even so, he offered to clean the entire line. All times I’ve gone right at opening and so the restaurant hadn’t served any of the allergen-specific food items yet, which meant the entire grill was safe for us. Food is 10/10, there are some puzzles and books for kids at the table, and the food is DELICIOUS.”

Costco Wholesale

Costco Wholesale

Location: Nanjo, Japan

“Yes, there’s a Costco here! Such a wide variety of products! We are always able to find a fun and safe snack to stock up on while here. And the food court has pizza that is safe for us. We have been able to try all the flavors of smoothies here as well.”

McDonald's National Route 58 Kadena

McDonald’s National Route 58 Kadena

Location: Kadena, Japan

“Why does McDonald’s taste so much better when in a new country? I don’t know, but it’s a fact!! Sometimes fast food is our only safe option when we are out and about, because we can see the allergens on their menu online. The Happy Meals are a guaranteed safe meal for our allergy kiddo, and the fun Happy Meal toys are of course an added bonus!”

Cafe Halcyon

Location: Okinawa Prefecture, Japan

“VEGAN cafe serving crepes and drinks. So so delicious. Not safe for OUR allergies, but PERFECT for those with dairy or egg allergies!”

Happy More Farmers Market

Happy More Farmers Market

Location: Ginowan, Japan

“This is an indoor farmers market. Many of the baked goods were labeled for allergens. Large produce selection. And a smoothie bar with ingredients listed so we were able to safely grab smoothies!”

Sushi & Pokebowl Ryukyu

Sushi & Pokebowl Ryukyu

Location: Chatan, Japan

“We safely ordered french fries, cheese sticks, and rice for our kiddo with food allergies (anaphylactic to sesame, tree nuts, lentils, and OIT for peanuts)! Sesame is almost completely unavoidable here in Okinawa, so it is present at this restaurant. But when we want a meal out, we fill up his belly at home and then he gets to enjoy the fun deep fried sides and rice at the restaurant! We have consistently safely ordered those 3 items multiple times. There is a small kids play area, too, which we love!”

Wake & Bagels

Wake & Bagels

Location: Chatan, Japan

“Love to order to-go and eat on the beach just feet away! We safely order a PLAIN bagel with cream cheese (anaphylactic to sesame, tree nuts, lentils, OIT for peanuts).
For my allergy kiddo, we don’t order any of the sandwiches in case there is an allergen in one of the sauces. But we can get him a plain bagel with cream cheese, juice, and french fries, safely before popping to the beach across the street. Perfection!
I personally like to order the lox bagel for myself.”
