Tsukiji Market

Location: Chuo City, Japan

“This is an outdoor market in Tokyo. It’s a very cool stroll even if you don’t find something to eat. There is a lot of fish and seafood, so I don’t recommend it if you have severe allergies to those things. Otherwise, most food stands sell only one or two things, so their prep areas are actually pretty safe. I was a fan of the honey-covered sweet potatoes, char-grilled calamari, and hot sake! Also, Japanese candy is phenomenal!”

“This vegan restaurant has a lot of allergy-friendly foods. They do use a lot of soy, so if you have a soy allergy, it may be difficult. Delicious vegan bread with soy butter or red bean paste is a free add-on. Great main menu items and nice drinks. It’s a bit of a diner feel.”

Otsuna Sushi

Location: Minato City, Japan

“Was so relieved to come across @allergytravelr’s review of Otsuna Sushi after I went down a Reddit rabbit hole of hidden allergies in some soy sauce, teriyaki, and udon around Japan.

Otsuna Sushi was an incredible restaurant with beautiful decor and ambience. They were established over 130 years ago and boast one of the most famous inari in Japan! And once you try them, there’s no question why. The texture and flavouring are so special, the hostess assured us there were no nuts in the restaurant, and this was a wonderful experience. For 12 pieces, hot green tea, and soup, we paid about $13 USD.”

Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu

Location: Minato City, Japan

“This izakaya was the inspiration for the famous fight scene in Kill Bill. Slightly touristy, but excellent food, and it was the easiest restaurant to communicate/make reservations with from the US. I exchanged multiple emails with the restaurant informing them of the nut allergies, and they wrote back asking for clarification on the allergy (if it was peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame). I said no sesame and they said they would make our visit safe. I don’t believe they have any nuts. Couldn’t identify any prior to making the reservation, and never saw anything containing nuts on the menu. Despite my email conversation, I still shared an allergy card, translating the severity of the allergy that I purchased from Select Wisely, with the waitstaff. Great experience and super fun environment!”

When we arrived at this small counter restaurant, the chef immediately acknowledged the allergy and asked if sesame was okay. The chef spoke perfect English (he was not Japanese) and said they have no nuts. The menu is very small, but delicious. This is the Tokyo location of the Michelin-starred Brooklyn restaurant. Very good understanding of allergies and very good service!”

“Great place to grab lunch or a snack. We ended up eating a snack here because a lot of the food stalls in Harajuku were not safe, or people didn’t speak English or Japanese, so our allergy cards were ineffective. Candy A Go Go!

Location: Shibuya City, Japan

Café Mori no Terrace

Location: Shibuya, Japan

“Maybe we were just dying of thirst, but this place was great. I didn’t see a single nut, and the employees made sure to compare my allergy card with all their labels. I had the seasonal mint chocolate ice cream, which was pretty good, and a sip of the sparkling mint and lime beverage, which is super refreshing and a must-have in the heat. There’s most likely something safe for anyone, and it was not a bad experience!”

Chiku Chiku Cafe

Location: Shibuya City, Japan

“We were walk-ins but still managed to get in, but I recommend showing up early and booking a time slot to avoid any stress. They had zero food, so no allergy problems! They had coffee and tea (oolong and green) and water. The hedgehogs were adorable, and you got to hold them! I definitely recommend this place!”

Mipig Cafe

Location: Shibuya City, Japan

“This mini pig cafe in Harajuku was fun, and they only serve pig-shaped donuts. I emailed them prior to our visit and was provided with a list of allergens. They contain almonds, egg, milk, wheat, and soy. Almonds aren’t an issue for us, and you have to order the donuts, so easy to avoid them altogether if allergic.”

Brasserie Vicky’s

Location: Shinjuku City, Japan

“The service was very proactive and attentive. They fully understood what to do once they saw my allergy card, and the kitchen was one of the cleanest we’ve ever seen. There was a menu with several images of dishes, all of which were very accurate. Everyone in my family ordered vastly different dishes, and they were all delicious. I safely enjoyed the Club Sandwich with chips. I’m excited to come back for breakfast!

Edit: We came back for breakfast. Very diverse buffet with plenty of options! Everything was labeled for about 20 allergens, and I was able to safely have a hotel pastry for the first time. One of the best breakfast buffets we’ve ever seen!”

We took a 3-hour sushi-making class. Our family was with four others, and they asked the group about any food allergies again, so something they take seriously. This was one of our favorite activities, and they couldn’t be nicer there. Totally recommend!”
