Peanut, Tree Nut, Dairy, and Egg-Free Scotland Top Picks

Hi! I’m Catherine, and I recently studied abroad in St Andrews, Scotland! I was able to find many spots to safely eat with my dairy, egg, peanut, and tree nut allergies. I am excited to share my favorite finds, and one of my absolute favorites was Tailend, where I safely had the most incredible fish and chips (and visited there very often)! If you visit, make sure you check out the Uni campus at St Andrews where Prince William and Princess Kate first met, the 1000s era castle and cathedral, Fife Coastal path leading to the neighboring towns, Isle of Skye, and venture to Edinburgh to see all the medieval sites in arguably the most beautiful city- especially Edinburgh Castle and St Giles Cathedral! Howies Restaurant

Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

“This is my favorite restaurant in the UK!!! They have multiple locations in Edinburgh and are absolutely fantastic with allergies. The menu is so well labeled and they will edit dishes to make them free from allergens, but not free from flavor! I’ve never usually had safe sauces on dishes, but they always made sure to make them safe. Chef Graham is amazing and so proactive and helpful when answering questions about the food. I probably dined here during every visit to Edinburgh this year. The catch of the day dish is my personal favorite.”

Little Italy

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“They were great at accommodating my allergens, but the amount of things that I could eat on the menu was limited because most had dairy or eggs on it.”

The Adamson Hotel

Location: Crossford, United Kingdom

“I stumbled upon this spot when looking for a restaurant in a very rural town, and they ended up being so accommodating with my allergies. I even found out the whole kitchen was nut-free.”

The Niblick Restaurant & Bar

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“This restaurant is incredible! They have a vegan soup of the day that I’ve had multiple times and has been great for my allergies. This past visit, I had tomato soup, haddock with veg and tomato sauce, and the cherry on the top was my first sticky toffee pudding ever! They had a vegan one on the menu that is nut- and gluten-free, and after being on the hunt for a safe version, this spot made my day! They were great with accommodating my allergies and making sure that they adapted the dishes as needed. I love that a whole dish was safe for me to order with little changes—lots of them were naturally free from certain allergens! And the view looks out onto the 18th hole at the St Andrews Old Course—for the golf lovers!”

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Such a phenomenal meal, restaurant, and location. The food and drinks were double-checked to make sure that they were all allergy-friendly for me. They even adjusted dishes to make them safe—which made for a fun dining experience with unique dishes. I ordered this scallop and cauliflower starter, salmon with roasted veg, chips, and arguably the best side salad of my life, and I finished with a blackberry sorbet that I am still thinking about. The service, communication, and food are a 10/10. I love how the restaurant overlooks the 18th hole of the Old Course and the North Sea. It’s a special place for sure.”

The Rule

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Always a great spot for a pint! Great with double-checking ingredients. I didn’t dine here, just drinks.”

BlackHorn Burgers

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Ordered a lettuce bun burger here, and all the fries were made in their own safe fryer. So accommodating, even though it is a small kitchen!”

Saints Sizzle Classic Hamburgers & French Fries

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“I ordered the Saint Burger and they made it ‘vegan’ but with the regular beef patty— also ordered fries that are made in their own fryer with veg oil. The patty is the only thing on the grill, so there is no cross-contamination. I was confident with being able to eat here, since they have a vegan section of the menu, and I was right. They are great with allergies and making sure a staff member took my order instead of having me order with the QR code. They also brought it out with a vegan sticker and separate from my friends’ food so it wouldn’t touch allergens. I was pleasantly surprised because I’ve never ordered burgers out before! And the view of the sea from the restaurant is amazing too!”

Torrish at Ness Walk

Location: Inverness, United Kingdom

“Such a phenomenal dinner in Inverness. They double checked all allergens, and we felt so comfortable enjoying our meal there.”

The Steak Barn

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“I had to ask extra questions at this spot because all the food is made on the same grill. I asked if my scallops could be made in their own pan, and that was possible. The fries were cooked in their own fryer, too, which was great. I also had to have my food served on a slate or new plate instead of the wooden board that other foods are usually served on, because I didn’t want to risk having leftover allergens accidentally touch my food. Overall great meal and such a cool spot! The food market connected to it has a free-from section as well.”

Morrisons

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Larger selection of products and a larger free-from section. I went here for specific products that I wasn’t able to find at the other smaller groceries in town.”

Dune

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Great fresh seafood and a cool environment! They were lovely with accommodating my allergies for food and bar drinks.”

M&S Simply Food

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“There is a small free-from section here, but I was also able to find safe snacks and drinks that were free from my allergens. They also have a great selection of prepared foods that are all labeled clearly.”

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“I ordered fish and chips with cider after golfing with my friend! They were great with allergies and were very accommodating. It was such a great lunch spot right on the course.”

The Bothy St Andrews

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“I loved ordering fish and baked chips here. They were very flexible with accommodating my allergies. I ate there with a huge group, and they were still so attentive with  my meal–it made for a wonderful experience.”

Landy’s Fish and Chips

Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

“Such a great fish and chips shop in Edinburgh! I ordered their Cajun fish tacos, and they were so kind about checking with the kitchen about allergens. They even had an allergy menu online. There was some confusion about which allergens were present in the fryers, so I opted for the tacos with baked fish instead. They did have a gluten-free fish in a vegan fryer, but said the pizza goes in the same fryer, which was confusing, so all I’ll say is to double-check with the fryers. Otherwise, great meal!”

The Physician

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“This spot has great Scottish food (decent selection) and is very accommodating with food allergies. The bar was great with checking on ingredients for mixed drinks as well. It has the coolest atmosphere, so I highly recommend it for all these reasons!”

The Adamson

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“This spot is connected to The Physician, and they were generally great with accommodating my allergies. I did have an issue with cross-contamination when they served me my meal, but I was able to see the allergen ingredient on my plate and ask them to remake it for me before I ate any. Afterwards, it was totally fine and I ate safely.”

Tailend Restaurant

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“I actually cannot say enough great things about Tailend and how yummy the food is/how great they are with allergies! I always wanted to find a fish and chips spot when I came to the UK, and this has been my place since moving here basically. They have a separate fryer for chips, can cook things in separate pans to avoid cross-contamination, and the staff are genuinely the kindest people and so understanding about accommodating allergies and answering ingredient questions. I order takeout or sit in, and it’s been one of my go-to spots since being abroad, so I cannot recommend it more. A must-visit if you’re in St Andrews!”

The Balmoral

Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

“We spent Christmas here and they went simply above and beyond with making every meal allergy-friendly for us. I had never had breakfast, lunch, and dinner out at a restaurant in my whole life, but this hotel made it possible. The lunch and dinner were multiple courses that were all made based on a specially curated allergy friendly menu they had made for my family and I based on our allergies that we reached out about, in advance. It made the holidays so special to be able to enjoy so many safe meals and be so relaxed. The hotel is in the heart of Edinburgh, right on Princes Street overlooking the Castle– it’s truly perfect.”

The Seafood Ristorante

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“One of my favorite meals ever. If you are a seafood lover, this is the spot for you. They went above and beyond to make sure things were safe for my allergies. The halibut and scallops with curry sauce were the best dishes I’ve ever had. I was even able to order a dessert because they had a vegan mango and chocolate mousse dish on the menu that was ‘free from all allergens, so anyone could enjoy it, which was not anything I would’ve ever expected to see from a Michelin Star spot.”

Dunvegan Bar & Restaurant

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“This is THE SPOT in St Andrews for students and golfers alike. The atmosphere is unmatched. They were always great with allergies at the bar with drinks, but couldn’t guarantee safe food in the kitchen.”

The Saint Bar & Kitchen

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Such a fun atmosphere with the most unique drink combos–they were great about making them with clean shakers. The food menu was great too, they were accommodating with my allergies, but I did have to ask a bunch of questions to make sure they understood my allergen requests.”

Zizzi – St Andrews

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“A classic. They are great with allergies, and I’ve dined here in England as well. The menu is labeled online, but still double-check with the server about allergens.”

St Andrews Brewing Co. South St

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“Always a great spot for a pint! Great with double-checking ingredients. I didn’t dine here, just drinks.”

Forgan’s St Andrews

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“A very farm-to-table-esque spot, and I had a great chicken with mash, green beans, and crisp ham dish. The mash was vegan and the menu was labeled well. I asked extra questions to make sure everything was dairy-, egg-, and nut-free, like the menu had listed, and it ended up being great. They do traditional Scottish Ceilidhs (dance evenings) on Saturday nights as well!”

The Cottage Kitchen

Location: St Andrews, United Kingdom

“This is such a cute spot! The menu is helpful with vegan and gluten-free options labeled. I loved ordering their salmon poke bowl. They were great with checking on ingredients and making changes to dishes to accommodate my allergies. Definitely recommend for a quick bite to eat in the heart of town!”

The Chester Hotel

Location: Aberdeen, United Kingdom

“An amazing spot! I’ve never ordered soup before, but they had vegan tomato soup on the menu-along with a great salmon dish and fun raspberry mocktail. I cannot recommend this hotel more because of the cool location and them being so flexible with allergies.”

The Waterfront

Location: Anstruther, United Kingdom

“I stumbled upon this spot after a long adventure day, and they were so kind and made me a safe meal of seabass, potatoes, veg, and a salsa verde sauce. Such a cute location in one of the main waterfront towns in Southeastern Fife!”

Blank Street Coffee

Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

“MY FIRST TIME ORDERING AT A CAFE! This was huge for me because I’m usually worried about cross-contamination at cafes. I ordered the blueberry matcha! Their default milk is oat milk, and they whipped out an allergy booklet for me to look at and read the ingredients for everything! I was surprised they made me sign something to acknowledge that I had read the ingredients and had to write my allergens down—I’ve never seen that done before. They used clean utensils to make my drink and asked about whether I wanted them to do so—so they’re very proactive and helpful with accommodating my allergies!”
