Allergy-Friendly Tulane University Campus Guide

I met with a dietitian to go over everything I need to know about how to handle my severe peanut and tree nut allergies in college (I’m attending Tulane University in the fall) and not only are the cafeterias peanut and tree nut-free, they also have a section and a room (being built for fall 2019) where it’s completely nut-free and gluten-free. The school is Allertrained, which means a lot, and are very careful with cross contamination. Wow. Feel so safe going here.

Lilette

For the most romantic and beautiful dinner, my go to is Lilette. Located only ~10 minutes from campus on Magazine Street, Lilette is a crowd favorite. Serving amazing French food, I’ve never had a problem navigating my allergies here, despite there being nuts on the menu. My go to order is: shrimp appetizer, hearts of palm salad, and steak entree. You won’t regret it. I recommend eating outside if the weather permits.

Tal’s Hummus

Amazing. If you know me, you know I love Tal’s. Only nuts are in dessert (last time I checked) but I still tell them about my allergies (old habits die hard.) My go-to order is the Mediterranean chicken platter with gluten-free flatbread! It’s super casual and I recommend eating outside if the weather is nice.”

Shaya

So good with allergies. I’ve had so many great experiences where the waiter will go above and beyond for my allergies. The food is awesome. It’s a fan favorite in New Orleans.

Tableau

So cute and scenic. Sit upstairs on the patio if you can. Located downtown in the French Quarter, it’s so fun to people watch. The food rocks. I’ve been for brunch, lunch, and dinner, and I’m never disappointed! Waitstaff have always been awesome with my allergies.

Tito’s Ceviche

If you know, you know: Tito’s is the BOMB. If I had to ballpark, I’d say I’d be dining at (or taking out) from Tito’s 3-4x a week while I was at school. It’s THAT good. There aren’t many nuts on the menu, and the waitstaff are knowledgeable. The food is unreal. I’d give you order recommendations but it would just be the menu in its entirety (lol). Sit outside if it’s a nice night. Definitely get the tuna crudo tostones, I’d be personally offended if you didn’t.

Baru Bistro & Tapas

Super cute! Food is awesome. It’s a tiny restaurant and like most places in NOLA, I like sitting outside. The waitstaff have been great with allergies from my experiences. Super fun place to go with friends.

The Chloe

The Chloe is a boutique hotel with a pool. They also have a great restaurant with a tiny menu. The food is great and I haven’t had any problems with allergies. The pool is open to the public (sometimes you have to pay for entry). They serve lunch at the pool as well. It’s cute for drinks or small groups.
