Tell us about you!
Where are you studying abroad?
Florence, Italy
How did you choose your study abroad location?
It was the best program for me in the best city! The program was one week long and took place in a city with great gluten-free options.
Do you speak the local language and had you been out of the country before studying abroad?
I had been out of the country, but I did not speak Italian.
Did you plan anything ahead of time?
Did you have any concerns about traveling with celiac?
What airline did you fly? Did you eat the plane food or have any special accommodations?
On the way over I flew Brussels Airlines and on the way back I flew Lufthansa. For both I requested a gluten-free meal a couple weeks before I left in my trip. Brussels Airlines did not bring out my gluten-free meal, and I had to ask them if they had one for me. They did have one, but I chose to just eat the prepackaged Udis bread. Lufthansa was more organized and brought out my own meal without me having to ask, however I only ate the bread and salad. They did bring me a sandwich close to landing that was completely different from what other passengers were eating. I did eat that and did not have any issues. I brought many snacks! Quest protein chips were life savers, and I also brought some Schar muffins and crackers.
Where did you live and how were meals handled?
Since my program was only a week long, my classmates and I stayed in a hotel and we mainly ate out at restaurants.

What are your 3 favorite places to eat at in Florence?

If there’s a food your study abroad location is known for that you were able to have safely, what was it and where did you try it?
Pasta! I had Bolognese at Mama Eat.
What other places have you visited so far?
Besides the food, were there any fun experiences or favorite things you did?
I loved sightseeing! The Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery are amazing. The city is also so beautiful that simply walking around is a fun experience. Also, make sure to visit a wine window!
What are your best tips for studying abroad with celiac?
Make sure the professors and program knows about your dietary restrictions just in case anything happens.
