“We took an impromptu pasta making class and the chef was very allergy aware and versed on cross-contamination. The class used simple whole ingredients safe for my friend with allergies and she was able to enjoy a meal and cooking class in one! Overall an excellent experience!”

COSTA RICA

Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort

“I spent five days at Arenas Del Mar for my honeymoon and it was an incredible experience that I would recommend to any celiac traveler. They have a whole page on their website titled ‘Gluten-Free & Fabulous’, where they share all the details of their fully certified gluten-free dining program. They also offer a tortilla making class which was a fun learning experience, and of course getting to try them at the end was a plus!”

FRANCE

Cook’n With Class Paris

Location: Paris, France

“This cooking class was for one day and we absolutely loved the food and the chef instructor. He was very safe with our allergens. I highly recommend this place, as you are learning how to cook French food while knowing which ingredients are being put in the food that you will eat. It was so much fun to learn. We started with going out and getting the groceries, and then making a full course meal. Again, if you visit Paris, you should definitely sign up for this class!”

Chef and the City

Location: Milan, Italy

“This isn’t a restaurant but when I was in Milan I took a cooking class which I never thought I’d be able to do because of my allergies. Because of Spokin I saw other people doing cooking classes and thought I would give it a try. When booking the class it asks you to list any allergies you have, which I did, but when I went to the class, she asked everyone if they had allergies. I was the only one but the chef was beyond accommodating. I went in thinking I wouldn’t be able to try some of the foods but everything was able to be modified. When prepping the food the chef made sure to never touch my station if she had just touched dairy or nuts and would change her gloves, my food was placed on pans and cooking sheets that were different from each other so we knew which was which. This was an amazing experience and I think I could go on about how incredible this experience was forever.”

Cook with us in Rome

Location: Rome, Italy

“Had an awesome experience here! The chef was super knowledgeable and knew the difference between cross-contamination, traces of, etc. One other person in the class had a nut allergy and another had a fish allergy! We did not make anything at all with nuts or shellfish, and I communicated my allergies prior to booking. For the tiramisu, the lady fingers may contain traces of nuts, so he gave me my own to use. A really really fun class and Prosecco was flowing the whole time!”

Nonna’s – Handmade Pasta With Grandma

Location: Palombara Sabina, Italy

“Pasta with Nonna! This cooking class was incredible. When we signed up we noticed the site had listed dietary preferences that they were able to accommodate for including tree nuts and gluten! You must contact them before the experience in order to ensure a safe meal. The class also came with a translator (because Nonna didn’t speak English), which made me feel like we had an extra level of protection. They ensured that there would be no cross-contact between the foods did an excellent job cleaning up before eating. I just wanted to note that I am okay with touching gluten and we had agreed beforehand that I would make (gluten) pasta but Nonna would make my gluten-free pasta separately on the side. The first dish also had tree nuts in it. If you are uncomfortable with nuts being in the kitchen at all you must have a conversation before arriving. They were great with keeping the dishes separated to avoid cross-contact and I felt extremely comfortable. Highly recommend this experience.”

Ristorante Beccafico

Location: Firenze, Italy

“We took a cooking class via GetYourGuide (which I swear by for tours and early tickets). Our instructor Guila was patient and kind with the kids and concerned with our food allergy. She brought out the package for the lady fingers to review ingredients. We made two kinds of pasta, even ravioli (spinach and ricotta), and tiramisu! We decided to skip the coco topping for my tree nut allergy daughter. This was the best meal we’ve had in Italy. For adults, it included unlimited wine. This couldn’t have been a better experience to learn and to see our food prepared first hand. Highly recommend!”

Tuscan Taste Florence

Location: Florence, Italy

“We took a private gluten-free cooking class with Chef Vary at Tuscan Taste Florence! We felt so safe here knowing how seriously Chef Vary takes celiac disease. The work space was completely sanitized and covered for the class. The equipment we used (even the pasta maker) were all dedicated gluten-free and even the ingredients like salt are all kept separately to keep them from being contaminated. Chef Vary was the perfect instructor and taught us to make ravioli and a spaghetti pasta that turned out to be one of our favorite meals in Florence!”

Via Francesco Ciusa, 71

Location: Cagliari, Sardinia

“This was a private cooking class booked through EatWith.com in Cagliari, Sardinia and it was amazing! We made a Sardinian pasta called Culurgiones and it’s a new favorite! I informed the instructor (Damiano Usula) of the allergy ahead of our class and he said it wasn’t a problem. He served us Sardinian wine, cheese, and cured meats while we made pasta, then we ate our creation. Nut-free and such a wonderful experience with a local cook!”

JAPAN

Cooking Sun Tokyo

Location: Tokyo, Japan

“Cooking Sun teaches cooking classes. I emailed them prior to our trip to make sure they don’t use any nuts and they asked if sesame was okay and assured us that no nuts are used there. We took a 3-hour sushi making class. Our family was with four others and they asked the group about any food allergies again, so something they take seriously. This was one of our favorite activities and they couldn’t be nicer there. Totally recommend!”

“When I say this is tied for the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at in my life, trust me. It’s absolutely incredible. The hospitality of the staff, the freshness of the food, the luxurious rooms. W O W. They had gluten-free bread and pasta for me (email in advance to tell them you have celiac), and were able to prepare many items safely without cross-contact, including potatoes. They even organized a gluten-free candy making class for me! HIGHLY and enthusiastically recommend.”

SPAIN

cookandtaste

Location: Barcelona, Spain

“Such an incredible experience in the heart of Barcelona! This cooking class began with a tour of La Boqueria Market from the head chef to pick up the fresh, local ingredients. We learned more about the history of the city and the culture of the food scene! Then we spent hours drinking wine and cooking a potato tortilla, vegetable and seafood paella, and crème catalan (like crème brûlée). When booking, we were able to identify any allergies or dietary restrictions which were happily catered for by the staff (see photo). No nuts were used throughout our class whatsoever, but there would likely be extensive cross-contamination of other allergens (eggs, milk, soy, wheat, shellfish, etc). But they offer private classes too, which may better accommodate other needs!”

“This is a place with cookie and cake decorating classes, which was so fun! The cookies I made turned out so cute! They are not a nut-free facility, however they told me if you make a note on the reservation, they will withhold using nuts in the other baked goods they serve during the class. Great to know for next time! I safely did eat the cookies as well, as there were no nuts in them. Overall great vibes and yummy cocktails too! Definitely recommend!”
