Nut-Free Portugal and Spain Top Picks

Hi! I’m Susie, Founder of Spokin and allergy mama to Natalie, my inspiration to start a food allergy app! My family recently traveled to Spain and Portugal to visit my non-allergy daughter who was studying abroad in Barcelona. We traveled to Lisbon, Portugal first and did a day trip to the beach town of Cascais, then Barcelona and ended in Mallorca. Natalie is allergic to peanuts, cashews and pistachios and we were surprised at how many nuts were on the menus in Lisbon but we managed and shout out to Mallorca for being one of the most allergy-friendly places we have ever been! We are a sweet tooth family so had to try a pasteis de nata in Lisbon at Pasteis de Belem and churros in Barcelona at Xurreria Treblol and special shout out to the Lisbon location of Santini Gelados Artesanais for the best ice cream shop experience of our life! Favorite restaurants were Goia and Neni in Port De Soller in Mallorca — also a great area to walk around. Sunset watching is a must and highly recommend the Sunset Lounge at the Jumeriah Mallorca Hotel. Follow me on the Spokin app @susie to see my 1,912 reviews and check out my Greece Guide!

“We were so exhausted after a day trip to a beach town and with an early flight in the morning decided to order in pizza from a place my husband found was considered top 50 in the world. We saw very little nuts on the menu, pesto which we assumed had pine nuts and hazelnut – I ran it through ChatGPT and it said the same. My husband called the restaurant and they absolutely understood English and when we explained we wanted to order on Uber Eats (seriously please don’t judge me, we were that tired lol) they said to note it on our order. We put it in special instructions (although we noticed it said something about not being able to accommodate allergy requests, like a general Uber Eats message) but all was beyond perfect and our receipt had the allergies listed and the pizza was really good (and we are Chicagoans haha.) She ordered a prosciutto pizza!”

“This ended up being a great plan to eat dinner our first night in Lisbon in our hotel because we flew overnight and our girls got tired at different points and were able to just head upstairs but also it was very fun vibe, cool crowd, DJ and food was safe! My daughter got a very fun pink cocktail that had egg white and it was listed in the menu. We had a hummus appetizer that was really good (and I don’t love hummus), a flat cheesy focaccia, and my daughter had steak and fries. There are a few nuts on the menu but staff was patient and willing to check on things like the pesto which did have pine nuts.”

Seagull Method cafe • Brunch

“Very cute brunch spot that we went to without seeing the menu. They definitely had nuts, especially pistachios, on the menu but they were very kind and gave us the usual cross contact discussion but we felt they were very careful. My daughter got the breakfast hot dog which they are famous for and we shared a French toast for the table: the French mirage which did have pistachios but it was not listed on the menu. My other daughter had the spice girl pancakes that had pistachios but she got without of course and they were the star of the show!”

“Cute spot at the entrance of the LX Market that definitely had some nuts on the menu but well labeled and the staff was well informed. My daughter got the Asia bowl with sushi rice, marinated tuna, avocado, mango, shiitake mushrooms and seaweed. She loved it!”

SUD Lisboa Terrazza

SUD Lisboa Terrazza

“All was safe for us and the view was amazing but there were a lot of nuts on the menu. The staff was fantastic and caring but we changed a couple items to be on the safe side and definitely passed on dessert. We started with burrata and mushroom risotto and my daughter had steak and some of my eggplant parmigiana. Definitely a higher end spot.”

Hediard

“This is the location at the Lisbon airport. My daughter safely ate a chocolate croissant and a chocolate milk from here. Let me just say, I would have preferred that she found something else as they have items with other nuts like pistachios but she is 22…and we asked about the ingredients, used our Equal Eats card and they offered to use a clean tong to get it out of the case which we appreciated that they offered.”

Captain Porto Candy And Chocolates

“WOW! Every candy has ingredients listed. They were in Portuguese but after we asked about nuts someone came out to help and looked at every single bin with my daughter to read the label for her. I can’t imagine any had nuts but the level of care was exceptional!”

Pastéis de Belém

Pastéis de Belém

“We were told this spot has the very best pasteis de nata and we went to the takeout entrance and the line was much faster. We definitely felt rushed but they confirmed no nuts. My allergy girl LOVED it. Was so fun for her to have an iconic eat!”

Santini Gelados Artesanais - Rua do Carmo

Santini Gelados Artesanais – Rua do Carmo

“OMG the literal best gelato I’ve ever had in my life and the 2nd best overall allergy experience! We found this spot on TikTok and I got a little concerned when I saw them using the same scooper for each flavor but when my daughter shared about her allergy the person working first shared several flavors that contained nuts that surprised us but then it was absolute perfection as he got a clean scooper and got fresh bins and could not have been nicer. When I thanked him profusely he replied “of course, I’m human.” PS I had the chocolate chip which was called Marabunta and INSANE!”

Mama Shelter Lisboa

Mama Shelter Lisboa

Location:

“So far very happy with this hotel as we needed room for 5 (which ended up being 6 when my daughters boyfriend joined us) and hotel rooms are smaller in Europe but we booked 2 of the large rooms which each have a double/queen bed plus a sofa bed which is so unusual. Staff has been so kind and it has a fun, arty vibe. We ate dinner safely the first night in the lobby and they have a fun rooftop bar and restaurant that has a great view!”

TAP Air Portugal

“This is definitely a mixed review. In the end, all was safe and great but it took more effort and advocacy on our end than I think it should have. I was only concerned because we had gotten upgraded to business class which we were so excited about for an overnight flight because I anticipated they would serve nuts. So I reached out ahead of time and they said mention it at the airport which I did but they said mention on the plane which I did and the initial person said you have to have called ahead of time and was not nice at all — so I was in a bit of a loop…I ended up talking with the supervisor flight attendant who was so nice but kind of said there wasn’t anything she could do and that they do offer nuts. I was really starting to sweat it and honestly it was due to all the nice passengers that helped problem solve. We ended up moving my daughter to a spot that she wasn’t next to anyone and across the aisle from my other daughter. I asked other passengers around her if they wouldn’t mind not eating nuts and everyone said of course – so so nice but felt like it would have been nice if the airline was more helpful. We ate dinner before the flight for lots of reasons including they couldn’t share any ingredients or allergy beforehand. It was a later flight after 9pm so most everyone slept (including me!) We snacked which helped and my daughter told me when she landed that she had a few bites when food came and the flight attendant was able to share all ingredients with her.”

Cascais

Mar do Inferno

Mar do Inferno

Location:
Cascais, Portugal

“Stunning views in Cascais right in the water. The server said there were no nuts in the food menu and my daughter safely had bread with crab dip, panko shrimp, and a sangria. LOTS of fish and shellfish. Incredible service. We took a day trip from Lisbon and so glad we did! “

Santini Gelados Artesanais - Cascais (Av. Valbom)

Santini Gelados Artesanais – Av. Valbom

Location:
Cascais, Portugal

“So good we had to come back. Same protocols but a little less friendly. They said they had no peanuts in any flavors but everything was made in a facility with allergens like nuts. We had a bit of a jump scare as my daughter ordered a cone (you order and pay before you share the flavors you want) and they told us that the cone had nuts (she ate one the day before …) but we asked to see the label which was in Portuguese but I used ChatGPT to read and it’s a warning label not that it contains nuts.) My daughter really wanted it and got it but they said they could not give her the flavors she wanted because they couldn’t take gluten to the back. They had 2 flavors including 1 that she wanted that had a clean bin underneath so she got the cone and manabuta (chocolate chip) and tangerine. Also met someone in line who had an allergy who said she had been using Spokin on their trip! All good!”

Restaurante Julieta's

Restaurante Julieta’s

“Gorgeous view of the water at this tapas spot! The food was all safe and the server was so helpful. There were no allergens on the menu and everything we ordered did not have nuts. We actually couldn’t find anything that did. My daughter started with the White Lady drink and we got their tomato bread, potatoes braves, scallops, tuna and a ham croquette. This was a last minute reservation change and it got us to the water which was great but food wise was good, not wow.”

Billy Brunch

Billy Brunch

“Highly recommend! We actually found ourselves wanting to eat between seeing the Sagrada Família and the Gaudi park and being tighter on time than expected, Spokin literally saved us! We opened the app and saw the great reviews for Billy Brunch so we tried the location down the block from the one shared on the app so this is the first I think for this location. My daughter had the maxi American that had pancakes, eggs, bacon and more and it was a huge serving! Just wanted to note that I was able to get gluten-free bread! Love this place and would go back!”

Gringa All Day

Gringa All Day

“Fine, not a great experience in part because my daughter didn’t push too much on her questions and I felt less comfortable as a result coupled with peanut butter on the menu (shakes too). They are known for chicken sandwiches and breakfast burritos and two of my daughters split both. Wouldn’t run back but if in the area I’d bring a card and I’m sure it would be fine.”

Beanywood Café Store

Beanywood Café Store

MYKA Greek Frozen Yogurt

MYKA Greek Frozen Yogurt

“OMG! This Frozen Greek Yogurt was so so good! My daughter had the natural flavor and banana (it’s soft serve style) and while there are toppings with nuts, each one has its own container and spoon and they make it right in front of you. My daughter had dulce de leche and mini chocolate chips. HEAVEN in a cute area not far from the Gaudi park. Perfect day!”

Xurreria Trebol

Xurreria Trebol

“Yum! We had to get churros in Barcelona and we were running out of time to go to a sit down spot. Our hotel recommended this place and it did not disappoint! They had a few labels stating vegan but no others. I asked if the churros and the chocolate had any nuts and they said no. The oil was sunflower and they did have one stuffed churro with pistachio. My daughter safely ate! I personally had the Dulce de leche (a stuffed one) that was INSANE!”

“We just checked in today but so far loving this hotel for the location, ability to add a twin bed to our room, (we needed 5 people in 2 rooms which is so hard to find and we didn’t want an Airbnb), and NUT-FREE candy in the lobby! They have been so nice so far. Will update more after the trip!”

“This is one of the restaurants at our hotel and we arrived in the afternoon and it was so nice not to get in the car for dinner and just walk here and the view is unbelievable! We had drinks to watch the sunset and then ordered a ton of food to share. They knew my daughter’s allergy when we checked in and were so great. We had crispy tuna, gyoza, a few rolls, and matcha for dessert. My daughter had yuzo flavor and we also tried a matcha pie. Photos were so hard to take as we moved inside to eat and we had a funky bar that we ate at haha but everything was amazing!”

El perrito - Coffe & Brunch | Sa Feixina

El Perrito – Coffe & Brunch | Sa Feixina

Location:
Palma, Spain

“Such a find! We landed at the airport in Palma and needed to find a casual spot — was truly blown away to see reviews on the Spokin app! Parking was tough and it was raining so we ducked into this place. They were incredibly caring and the owner came out to talk to us and could not be nicer. They said it’s their responsibility to take care of their guests and they need to be very careful. My daughter originally ordered the poke bowl but they suggested she get something else — we weren’t sure why or if it was a language issue but we appreciated their care. She safely had the club and fries. They have amazing homemade bread (note it had sesames) and the kids burger bun did not have sesames on it!”

Goia

Goia

Location:
Port de Sóller, Spain

“TOO GOOD! One of our best meals of our trip and easily top 10 allergy experience worldwide! This restaurant came highly recommended from someone who has been to Mallorca many times but doesn’t have allergies. My husband just made the reservation and I assume he didn’t look at the menu. Sadly he was sick and didn’t go out with us for dinner but we had the most fun GNO (girls night out). After seeing so many tree nuts on our trip I was surprised to see so many dishes with peanuts but they knew my daughter’s allergies when we walked in and walked through each item with nuts and if it could be made without nuts or not. We split three appetizers: the burrata, mushrooms and tuna, an entree, the salmon and dessert, Dulce de leche flan. My daughter also ordered a sangria and the bread was safe and came with kimchi butter. BEST meal of our trip!”

NENI Mallorca

NENI Mallorca

Location:
Port de Sóller, Spain

“Wow! One of our favorite restaurants of our trip! Very cool vibe and view of the water of the Port de Sóller. If it was a clear night the sunset would have been amazing. I think it’s an Israeli or Lebanese restaurant and while there were dishes with nuts—I recall seeing peanuts on their famous brown butter cauliflower and hazelnuts on the eggplant—they were all toppings that they kept off. They did want to let us know they were in the kitchen but our food would be made in it’s own area—the kitchen was actually open if you happen to want to watch 🙂 We ordered a lot of food since it was sharing style! My daughter had the Tokyo mule to drink and we ordered (this is slightly embarrassing but it was our last night and the server suggested 5 to 6 of the small plates) hummus, fried eggplant, Moroccan cigars, cauliflower, grilled artichoke, and fried artichokes (OMG best thing we ordered!) Then for mains we got the gnocchi (just okay), chicken shawarma and the Jerusalem plate—and tons of pita bread. My daughter also had the cheesecake for dessert. The restaurant was in a hotel and the lobby was fun and had a really good shop that our girls loved. It was also super close to our hotel and they drove us by golf cart! They also brought us a little complimentary bite when we sat down (heads up!) but they knew that it didn’t have any nuts.”

Villa Luisa Sóller

Villa Luisa Sóller

Location:
Port de Sóller, Spain

“Cute restaurant on the water front with exceptionally nice staff. It was a little cool outside and they set up a table for us inside and upstairs right in front of the windows so we could watch the sunset and see the water—we felt like we had a private room. They were so kind. Hardly any nuts from what we could tell. We used an equal eats card and they asked if hazelnuts were okay for my daughter. They are and she said yes but she still wouldn’t eat them out for dinner in a foreign country. They brought us an appetizer that we ordered with hazelnuts and when we explained they offered to remake which was very nice. Food was good but it was more the location and service that was really great. We had bread, olives, calamari, and eggplant and then our daughter had pasta with lobster. We also walked around the cute town before!”

de moniö

De Moniö

“The cutest combo food and shop that is vegan and vegetarian and my daughter and I safely had a matcha cookie that was insanely good! It’s a small kitchen and they had not made anything with nuts that day yet and my daughter felt comfortable eating it!”

Jumeirah Mallorca

Jumeirah Mallorca

Location:
Mallorca, Spain

“Updating now that we are here and had dinner at the hotel (see Sunset Lounge review) and now have also had breakfast where yes, I hugged the staff! Everything was labeled at the buffet including any potential cross contact and they also had a menu to order from. They offered to make anything my daughter wanted to ensure it was nut free (that’s where the hug came in!) My daughter very safely ate from the buffet. We sat by the pool and ordered water but they brought nuts out so we asked them to take them away and they offered to bring olives instead. Beyond impressed with this hotel for allergies and everything else. Heavenly.

We made a reservation here and I will update after our stay but I saw this review on Spokin and emailed the hotel to make sure that they could accommodate our allergies. They replied 100% they could handle it and wanted my daughter’s name to share with the team. We expect to eat breakfast at the hotel so just wanted to confirm!”

Air Europa

“We had a very short flight from Barcelona to Mallorca and when I asked if there would be any nuts on the plane they let me know there would be no food or drink service and asked to know where my daughter was sitting just so that they knew. Seemed very caring and I appreciated it!”
