University of North Carolina: Chapel Hill Allergy-Friendly College Campus Guide

Hi! I’m Emily and I attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC. I am planning on graduating in 2028 and am majoring in Computer Science and Data Science. Currently, I hope to have a career in some subset of computer science and data science. I manage a tree nut allergy and have shared 163 reviews on the Spokin app. Follow me there @nallergy and on Instagram @nallergy.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“UNC has been amazing with my food allergies! The on-campus dining halls — Lenoir and Chase — have lots of options for all dietary restrictions. The menus for each day, allergens in each food, and even ingredients in each food can be found both online and in the CarolinaGO app. They also have a Stress Less cabinet that keeps specifically allergy-free items in stock!

My dorm, Granville Towers, has a separate dining hall called The Agora. I’ve also never had a problem with eating here! I would recommend calling and asking to talk to the person in charge of food operations before eating here. He does a really great job of making you feel safe eating there, and he will email you a list of what you can eat and what you should avoid in the dining hall based on your allergies.

UNC Chapel Hill has a lot of on-campus restaurants/fast food options, and Franklin Street has a ton of amazing options as well. They also are home to a ton of amazing hospitals on campus, so I feel 100% safe!”

Sup Dogs

“The staff informed me that they do not serve anything with nuts here! This is a great spot to grab a burger or hot dog, especially on a game day.”

Spicy 9 Sushi Bar & Asian Restaurant

“Delicious Asian food near UNC! While they did have a few dishes with tree nuts, they were very limited to two or three dishes. I was able to safely get a couple sushi rolls and miso soup!”

The Carolina Inn, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel

“I recently had a sorority event here, and they did an AMAZING job with allergy awareness! They had a dessert table that had nut-free and other allergen labels on some of the desserts. This venue is also beautiful and so close to main campus for UNC Chapel Hill!”

I Love New York Pizza

“Great NYC style pizza place! As far as I can tell, they don’t have anything with nuts. I was able to get a slice of cheese pizza, and it was delicious!”

Hibachi & Company

“This is a great hibachi restaurant for when you’re on-the-go! The menu is very limited so I never have to worry about nuts here.”

Roots Natural Kitchen

“Roots is a very consistent place to get lunch! While they do have slivered almonds, the staff is very informed about the allergy process, and there is a detailed allergy menu online as well.”

YoPo: The Yogurt Pump

“They serve all kinds of frozen yogurt here. As far as nuts go, I’ve only ever seen a peanut butter flavor here along with a few nut toppings. The staff is very educated about allergies and is always willing to change gloves and get toppings from the back!”

Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery – Chapel Hill

“Top of the Hill is great for a fancier meal in Chapel Hill! I typically get a burger here, and I have never had a problem with my tree nut allergy.”

Graduate by Hilton Chapel Hill

“Great experience staying here! The room was nice and clean. The hotel is also basketball-themed and has a replica of Michael Jordan’s dorm room!”

Que Chula Craft Tacos & Tequila Bar

“Que Chula is the best! I have never had a problem with my allergies here, and the food is absolutely delicious.”

Starbucks

Starbucks

“Starbucks has always been a “no” for me, but the refreshers have relatively limited cross-contamination. When I order, I ask for them to use a clean shaker to keep cross-contamination minimal. I’ve gotten a strawberry açaí refresher a lot of times and have never had any problems! However, I’d be careful of getting a coffee there because of the nut milks and drinks (especially with their pistachio drinks being a new thing).”

Raising Cane's

Raising Cane’s

“Raising Cane’s has such a helpful allergy menu online. There use no nuts there, and you can see what allergens are in each dish. This isn’t the exact Raising Cane’s restaurant that I tried, but the one in Hawai’i was very good about my allergens, and it tasted really good!”

Bojangles' Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits

Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits

“I recently had Bojangles for the first time in years, and I really liked it! They have a clear allergen menu online that really helped me know what was safe for me to eat. I also noticed that they didn’t seem to have any nuts on the menu, which is great for someone with food allergies like me!”
