San Diego Allergy-Friendly Travel Itinerary

sandiegohero

I’m Lisa Horne, the mom behind the blog, Food Allergy P.I. As the mom of a teen with anaphylactic food allergies, I’ve learned to be a detective of all things food, fun and everything in-between. While food allergies can be tough, with a little research and planning we still enjoy life! Our most recent adventure took us to San Diego, California for a week in a VRBO. While we ordered groceries and made most of our meals at the vacation rental, we also visited a couple restaurants, bakeries and even a local amusement park where we enjoyed allergy-friendly food finds! I reviewed all our finds on the Spokin app, where you can come find and follow me for other reviews on products, travel, and more. I’m also on Instagram and all social media channels @foodallergypi!

DAY 1

Hotel: Marriot Residence Inn SD La Jolla

Location: San Diego

We loved having a kitchen in our hotel! A huge benefits with food allergies. Would stay again!

Dinner: Red Robin

Location: San Diego

Very allergy-friendly! It’s a go-to especially when traveling and you need something reliable yet yummy.

Treat: Starry Lane Bakery

Location: San Diego

Best allergy-friendly bakery in San Diego! My son’s first and best experience at a bakery. Love them!

DAY 2

Venue+ Treat: Dole Whip at Belmont Park

Location: San Diego

Dole Whip at Belmont Park is Top 9 free with the except of coconut!

Snack: Wetzel’s Pretzels

Location: San Diego

We are not tree nut allergy, just peanut allergy, and Wetzel’s has a PDF graph with detailed allergen info. While they have a sign that says “may contain peanut,” upon further investigation it’s only because of potential cross-contamination of their almond products. This was safe for us with just peanut and shellfish allergies.

DAY 3

Lunch: La Playa Taco Shop

Location: San Diego

We have peanut and shellfish allergies, and they were great! Just a 3-4 minute walk from the beach and boardwalk on Mission Beach. My son got the rolled tacos. Typically Mexican and Italian restaurants are safe for us. We will go here again!

Treat: PURE Cupcakes

Location: San Diego

Our usual go-to bakery was closed due to COVID restrictions, so we tried PURE Cupcakes and so glad we did! They have a section that are free of gluten, egg, dairy, nuts, and soy. They change gloves and wash down everything between batches. So delicious and allergy-friendly! My peanut allergy kid loved it!
