Peanut, Tree nut, Wheat and Peach-Free South Africa Travel Itinerary

Hi! I’m Anka and I recently traveled to South Africa! I found several safe spots to eat while managing peanut, tree nut, wheat, and peach allergies and shared them on the Spokin app—they are also all featured in this guide. One of my favorites was Spekbos at the Botlierskop Game Reserve, where I safely had a mango panna cotta with coconut sorbet. A fun thing to do if you are in the area is visit the Red Berry Farm and go strawberry picking! Follow me on Spokin @anka_not_anchor to see all of my allergy-friendly reviews!

34 Degrees South

Location: Knysna, South Africa

“The menu does give a ‘may contain’ warning (including wheat and nuts) but advises speaking to staff. I originally ordered a vegetarian pizza with a gluten-free base (requesting the pesto that is usually on it be omitted) but the waiter returned five minutes later to inform me their gluten free base contains nuts! I then changed my order to their roasted potato and vegetables with cheese and asked for the pesto that is also in that to be omitted. It arrived with no pesto and was very good. I’m glad the waiter noticed the base and informed me!”

Cape Saint Blaize Restaurant – Mossel Bay Lighthouse

Location: Mossel Bay, South Africa

“Climbed the lighthouse and then had a free and safe chai latte!”

City Lodge Hotel

Location: Kempton Park, South Africa

“Excellent buffet and had no issue finding something to eat. I had an omelette, grilled tomatoes, yogurt, and pineapple safely.”

Die Ou Pastorie Teetuin

Location: Groot Brakrivier, South Africa

“It is possible to order here, but be wary and stick to something simple. I ordered the three-egg omelet with a side of fried onions and rooibos tea. I wanted to order hot chocolate, but the waiter seemed confused about why marshmallows may be a wheat risk, so I opted for tea instead. The nuts risk seemed pretty limited based on the menu; mainly wheat I had to worry about.”

Dutton’s Cove Restaurant

Location: Herolds Bay, South Africa

“Had an EXCELLENT experience here! Waiter offered to pan fry a usually breaded halloumi dish for me and ensured to doublecheck the roasted veg was kept away from pesto in the kitchen. Also doublechecked the chai latte I ordered. Everything tasted amazing and I felt very safe eating here.”

Salt & Copper

Location: Mossel Bay, South Africa

“An excellent meal. Staff were very polite and friendly and also reiterated that my meal was nut free and gluten-free when they placed it on the table. The menu was well labeled with not too many nuts present. I ordered the gluten-free vegetarian pizza and a side of halloumi.”

Seeplaas Venue

Location: Groot Brakrivier, South Africa

“Ordered a chai latte and a good morning bowl without issue! Waiter was a bit confused about my ability to eat quinoa (asked if it counted as wheat), but otherwise, it went entirely fine, and the food was tasty.”

Spekbos Restaurant

Location: Little Brak River, South Africa

“Aside from one scare when my dessert arrived upon a plate with biscuit crumbs on it (the dessert itself was in glasses and entirely uncontaminated; I believe the plates are pre-prepared), I had a very positive experience here. I ordered a chai latte (just note there’s no milk options aside from regular or almond), an AMAZING chickpea salad (best I’ve ever had), and a mango panna cotta with coconut sorbet (very delicious). My mum had called prior and discussed my allergies in afrikaans, but when we arrived I spoke to waitstaff and ordered in english without issue. Waiters were very friendly and happy to answer questions.”

The Hussar Grill George

Location: George, South Africa

“We booked a table in advance and mentioned my allergies in the notes. Waiter had remembered the note and I didn’t have to explain a thing! Despite being a steak-based restaurant, the vegetarian selections are excellent and I safely had a butternut salad with a side of garlic baby potatoes (that were especially delicious). I was offered creme brulee or plain vanilla ice cream for dessert but was full and just had some rooibos tea instead. All in all, a great and safe experience!”

The Noshery Pizzeria & Deli

Location: George, South Africa

“We did have to pull some teeth to get the ingredients list for the gluten-free pizza bases but the pizza was safe and delicious. I ordered the posh nosh pizza and some rooibos tea. A great lunch place to pair with the nice activities at Redberry Farm.”

Woolworths Garden Route Mall

Location: George, South Africa

“Found a lot of allergy-friendly foods here including gluten-free crackers and a pre-made salad. Be sure to read the allergen specifics of every product as they do differ even if under the same brand. There’s also a cafe with pretty clear allergen labels and disclaimers but I didn’t order anything.”

O.R. Tambo International Airport

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa

“I ordered a chai latte with soy milk at Grabb Fresh (in the domestic terminal). Staff were happy to grab the packet so I could read the ingredients! Also, the tastiest chai latte I’ve ever had.”
